I never got to watch Troy play so I’ve always wondered what quarterback today is sort of his modern analog. All I have to go off of are his stats and I know they are deflated because of the era along with the nature of the 90s Cowboys offense as a rushing attack
I’ll ask the older zoners, if you had to compare Troy to a modern QB who would it be?
I'm not sure there really is a modern comparison. There's no one who has the perfect accuracy of prime Aikman. He was almost machine like. If the call was a 20 yard out the WR better run exactly 20 yards and be looking for the ball at 3.2 seconds because that ball was on its way. Dallas might only run 8 different plays all game but it didn't matter because they would out execute the other team time and time again.
He'd drive fantasy football people nuts because he'd be 15/18 for 170 yards and a touchdown or two at halftime and then throw 3 passes in the second half as Emmitt would grind the clock out. He wouldn't put up big numbers because Dallas didn't need to.
The problems later in his career really showed up because his passes were thrown where his receivers should have been instead of where they actually ended up. The whole organization lost the focus, discipline, and talent they had under Jimmy Johnson and Aikman floundered without any receivers he could trust.
Or of it was raining. For whatever reason Aikman was about the worst wet weather QB I've ever seen, and occasionally he'll say the same thing.
