A lot of young fans on the board think Troy Aikman sucked because of his numbers. Lol They don’t understand that it was a different era back then and that the Cowboys offense revolved around Emmitt Smith and the running game. There’s fans that think Tony Romo was the greatest QB in Cowboys history because of his franchise record production and passer rating. Some just don’t understand football.

Watch those out patterns on the sideline he’d throw to Irving for 15-20 a pop, with the defender right on Irvin’s back, and Troy would put it right exactly where it had to be every time. Aikman was crazy accurate.

You are such a football historian. I'd hate for you to look at Roger Staubach's stats.

Can't compare eras dipsh#$. Leave the football talk to the grown ups.

Difference being, when you adjust for era, Roger Staubach had one of the greatest seasons of all time. You can't say the same about Aikman.

Emmitt’s the greatest RB of all-time.
I agree with you for once. Smith was a great runner, an outstanding blocker and pass protector, and a great leader on the field. Sanders may have more elusive runs, but many of his runs resulted in negative plays. As Irvin has said, Barry did not have the want to that could have made him the greatest. Sanders didn’t want to to be the all-time rushing leader. He quit. He didn’t have the desire to be the best all around RB. He quit. He didn’t have the determination to be the best. Smith did.

If Troy has played in a high powered passing game, he could have broke record after, but he cared more about the team winning instead of instead of breaking passing records. Troy was not selfish, Troy only wanting to win.

Absolutely not!
Troy was the ultimate team player, he sacrificed stats, and did what he needed to do to win!
IMO, the most accurate QB…ever!
Troy would light todays NFL on fire.

I never got to watch Troy play so I’ve always wondered what quarterback today is sort of his modern analog. All I have to go off of are his stats and I know they are deflated because of the era along with the nature of the 90s Cowboys offense as a rushing attack

I’ll ask the older zoners, if you had to compare Troy to a modern QB who would it be?

I'm not sure there really is a modern comparison. There's no one who has the perfect accuracy of prime Aikman. He was almost machine like. If the call was a 20 yard out the WR better run exactly 20 yards and be looking for the ball at 3.2 seconds because that ball was on its way. Dallas might only run 8 different plays all game but it didn't matter because they would out execute the other team time and time again.

He'd drive fantasy football people nuts because he'd be 15/18 for 170 yards and a touchdown or two at halftime and then throw 3 passes in the second half as Emmitt would grind the clock out. He wouldn't put up big numbers because Dallas didn't need to.

The problems later in his career really showed up because his passes were thrown where his receivers should have been instead of where they actually ended up. The whole organization lost the focus, discipline, and talent they had under Jimmy Johnson and Aikman floundered without any receivers he could trust.

Or of it was raining. For whatever reason Aikman was about the worst wet weather QB I've ever seen, and occasionally he'll say the same thing.

Me and a buddy are in a disagreement. He says Aikman was overrated and he's in the Hall of Fame because he was on a great team and that he was a bus driver.
I said to him, without Aikman Cowboys don't win 3 Super Bowls if any at all. Aikman did what he had to do and it wasn't about gawdy stats but if Aikman had to put up big numbers than he could have.
Bus drivers can win a superbowl.

They don't lead a team to three wins in four years. /end thread.

Tell your friend (right, a friend) to take his complaints to Aikman's 3 rings. Yeah, Aikmaqn was part of a great team as was Brady, Montana, Rothlesberger, and now Mahomes, Allen and Lamar. Dont place asterisks where none belong.
Aikman also made his team great as did Emmitt, Irvin and Casillas and Woodrow.
Ooooohhhh, you make me so mad!!!!

Touch a nerve?

So if he played today, his 17 TD passes would make him a perennial MVP. Classic Cowboy fan. Now go clean your room.

He also said Emmitt Smith isn't even in the top 10 of all-time running backs. I say he's top 5.

Are you sure your friend is not posing as several posters on here, just saying the same stuff about current players.

So the still reigning, possibly perpetual all time leading rusher isn't even a top 10 running back? Does your friend have to wear a helmet at all times?

he is his “friend” and yes, he’s wearing a helmet

Too late. He’s already a HOFer. And a serious reminder that stats alone are never the best way to measure HOF worthiness. You have to have lots of context. Troy didn’t play in the pass dominant era of today.

When Aikman retired, real football experts like John Madden, Jimmy Johnson, Hank Stram, and Pat Summerall…all HOFers themselves- said Troy Aikman was the most accurate QB they had ever seen.

Look at Joe Namath. His stats alone would never got him into the HOF. He was a celebrity QB that predicted a win for the old AFL vs. NFL powerhouses for a SB win.
The HOF & the NFL needed that at the time to promote the merger going forward. Otherwise he may never have made it. Especially if they lost that game.

Your friend needs to "accidentally" fall down some stairs to get his head right.
