Was Aikman overrated?

He never made All Pro, so no, he wasn't.

I agree, in a different offense he could've put up Marino-like numbers.
But I guarantee Marino would trade his stats for Troy's rings, not vice-versa.

Fwiw, he was fortunate to play several years on all-world teams.

Troy once said, if he was told he would never complete a pass in a season, but they would win the SB. He would take that in a second. He did not care about stats, he cared about winning.

I loved Aikman. But get real. In 12 years he only had 20+ TD passes once.

Uh, look at how many TD's Emmitt had. Troy did not need to pass for TD's inside the 10 yard line.
How many times did Irvin catch the ball inside the 5 or at the 1 to set up an Emmitt TD run.

He did what was needed and played his role.

Is he one of the best QBs ever? No and I don't believe you'll find many lists that have him as such, but who cares? He was the leader that was needed on that team and something that the Cowboys have not found from the QB position since he retired.

When we needed him to make a pass he came through more than he didn't.

Emmitt wasnt overrated either and people saying he had a line is an awful excuse ...youre supposed to have a good linr
Emmitt had heart and drive something running backs do not all possess. Go watch that Giants game where he was injured badly and tell me he was over rated. Emmitt benefitted by the Great Wall of Dallas for sure, with that being said it was ultimately what was inside Emmitt to stay healthy and keep his mind and body right game after game till he broke the all time rushing record. Folks that in itself was a feat. A champion was the genetic make up of Emmitt Smith. Over rated I think not.

Me and a buddy are in a disagreement. He says Aikman was overrated and he's in the Hall of Fame because he was on a great team and that he was a bus driver.
I said to him, without Aikman Cowboys don't win 3 Super Bowls if any at all. Aikman did what he had to do and it wasn't about gawdy stats but if Aikman had to put up big numbers than he could have.

Troy has all the talent to win, when he was forced into passing shootouts he put up the big numbers to help this team win. Troy was all about winning, if that meant he handed the ball off 25 times to Emmitt then that is what he did, when he had to go out and make plays with his arm that is what he did.

I think if you put Aikman in the red gun offense like Jim Kelly or the WCO of Steve Young and Brett Favre or Run and shoot of Warren Moon that Aikman could have produced as well if not better. Dallas system did not need to put the ball up as often as these other teams but in the end it was about championship not stats for Aikman

Aikman above all was known for being accurate with his passes and that I believe made him more than a mere bus driver. He could also make every throw asked of him.

Probably a little overrated. I don't think he's top 2 in Cowboys history.

I don't like phrases like "<Insert team here> wouldn't have won without <Insert name here>." That is entirely dependent on who you replaced him with. Replace him with the backup? It's probably an accurate statement. Replace them with another good player at the position? That's an entirely different story.

Touch a nerve?

So if he played today, his 17 TD passes would make him a perennial MVP. Classic Cowboy fan. Now go clean your room.

It was a different era with different rules. 25 TD passes lead the league in 1992. Rarely did anyone throw over 30 TD passes until they changed the offensive rules to favor the QB and WRs. Guys like Aikman and Steve Young would tear up this era.

I'm very comfortable defending a first Ballot HOF QB with 3 super bowl rings.

The rule changes make this argument because they make QB's stats bloated now...in the 90's they didnt need "Tight Window" tracker as the WR was getting mauled and covered..Troy was truly one of the most accurate passers of all time and had a cannon to go deep also..no he was not over rated...If he played on the "Greatest Show on Turf" team you would fall out of your chair on the numbers he would've put up.

His RS game he was pedestrian as far as stats go also his td-INT ratio WAS POOR for HOF qb..i think he could be called overrated on stats alone but always stepped up in the playoffs.

Im one of those that believe Romo was more talented, and he could have been a hof qb on that 90s team same with zeke vs Smith , teams are important, and Troy had some of the best talent ever assembled with coaches and players.

so yes overrated if you look at the fact he rode the coattails of our run game and had MI and a very underrated TE to throw too. a stingy defense and great coaches. sure he for sure with those stats not just yards per game his td-int ratio was not great at all, very average,

what would he be on our teams since say 2005, id say no better then romo or dak given the situation.
165-141 61.5% compl % that not something to brag about..those are Dilfer like numbers

Your friend sounds like he just thinks "Dallas bad....nothing they do is credible"

Aikman wasnt overrated he was a field general and he played in an era where teams gave the ball to their RB 25-30 times a game

Emmitt wasnt overrated either and people saying he had a line is an awful excuse ...youre supposed to have a good linr
Td-INT ratio was very average. who cares about Yards he didn't have, i say there a debate on what the OP has said i believe in some sense in RS games with that team Troy was overrated in that argument alone. with that team how could you have a sad td-int ratio? ..

No. He was deadly accurate.

It was a much less passing oriented league back then. His stats are never going to compare to someone from 20 years later
deadly accurate but bad td-int ratio. why so many INTs?? 165-141 61.5% compl % that not something to brag about..those are Dilfer like numbers

his few great seasons of over 69% covered up like 8 around 55%

if this was Dak or romo he would be fried. Hated on just like our current guy is.. so accurate 61% and th141 Ints??

Troy does not get pass from me not on that team of coaches and players.
