I dont know, every week it seems someone new to the board posts a "Was it a mistake to draft _____________" thread and gets people all riled up.

I know it's frustrating, but think of it like this, he's coming here to get educated ;)

This is just as valid of a discussion as the 20 or so declaring Carpenter to definitively be a bust.

Spears has been pretty average. Spears didn't start initially in Dallas. Spears was drafted around the same time as Carpenter.

The big argument for going 3-4 was that it was easier to find players. I don't see that as being the case at all. Dallas still had to invest heavily in the defense to implement the 3-4. Is a two gapping DE in a 3-4 worth a first round pick?

average being stout against the run, and allowing our LBs to make plays?

again, it was a pick Dallas felt they needed to make, I can't argue w/ that, w/ 2 1st round picks, you are allowed to have one of them be for "need", and it was the 20th pick, you don't find too many franchise-type players in that part of the 1st round

spears today is better than mario williams and that guy cost a billion dollars.
plus holy crap our defense is stacked deep our second string would be starting for a lot of teams, the defense makes me all warm and fuzzy to think about. our depth on the d-line alone makes spears a bargain.

What we have in WR is a bandaid... It's temporary... Besides Crayton who do we have to look forward to... And who is to say that Crayton is a legit starter in this league... Let's get real here, TO and Glenn have been in the league for years... 11 years to be exact for both TO and Glenn... The same applies with our OLD QB... So people talk about this 3-4, but what difference will it make when we don't have a QB and WR in another year or two... Offense is priority, and if we don't draft again next year I'm going to pull my hair out lol...

Why do you care who to look forward two? Its WEEK TWO of the season.

I dont know how much you watch football, but a dominating defense can certainly compensate for a struggling offense. Defense wins championships. Period. End of.

Give me more all-star band-aids.

Are you implying it would have been better to draft Jones, Roddy White, or ?Clayton? I really think it's ridiculous to imply that any of their progress has been more significant than Spears.

last season's bears and the ravens before steve mcnair kinda proves you can have a monster defense and crap on offense and still win.

I was upset that we passed up Kyle Orton... Confused on the drafting of another RB in Barber... Wondering why a Safety wasn't drafted in the 2nd round instead we pick up a TE... I thought, and anytime you can get a draft pick from a NFC EAST TEAM it's a good thing... So yes I agreed with Canty and Ratliff... I just wish we could have foreseen Canty and Ratliff and passed on Spears... That's what Free Agency is for, we could have found a DE... Hello John Abraham....

I look back now and I'm thinking the Cowboys should have gone another route that year. Of course I would have preferred Merriman at #11 and Ware at #20 but that didn't happen. But what the Cowboys needed more was offense. So many years have passed by with the Cowboys failing to take a offensive player in the first round.

With players such as Matt Jones, Mark Clayton, Aaron Rodgers, Roddy White and Heath Miller still on board one can only imagine how the team would differ. Let's consider Spears, we were able to land a starter in Canty who came at the bottom of the 4th round. We still had Greg Ellis... We knew going into the draft that Keyshawn was going into his last year. Funny how BP drafted Fassano when a Heath Miller could have started the 2 TE system a year earlier... Even more a QB in grooming such as Aaron Rodgers or Jason Campbell could have been learning behind Bledsoe... Matt Jones; QB or WR... The best of both worlds... Hopefully Spears will work out, but I have the feeling that when we took Greg Ellis and passed a Randy Moss that we may have missed out on someone special...

What have Rodgers or Campbell showed?

Why use a 1 on Jones, Clayton, White when you can get TO w/o using a pick?

Miller in one or Fasano in two?

I like the value of Fasano in two far better.

Why use a 1 on a TE when we drafted a Pro Bowler in 3?

Bledsoe, Romo, Glenn, TO, Hurd, Crayton, Rector

We've invested a 6 (Glenn) and a 7 (Crayton) in that group.

Is it any wonder Jerry isn't in a hurry to take a Rodgers/Campbell project QB or the next best thing at WR in one?

Isn't that somthing that we could have gotten via free agency? I mean the year prior the Saints tried to give us Howard for Dat Nguyen and what happens? Dat goes down for the year...

Howard is another small DE that wouldn't have fit in the 3-4.

Oooohhhh...

So draft those guys...and use the band aids on defense?

Because using those resources for offense, means we take them away from the defense. Meaning, we'd have band aids on defense.

Ask the Colts how important a defense is.

Abraham at DE in a 3-4?

LOL....this is getting comical. Tell me next how Freeney would make an excellent DE opposite Abraham in our 3-4.....

Please. Kyle Orton SUCKS. Enough. Quit while you are ahead.

A good safety was drafted later and you are still whining about the Fasano pick?

We had to completely revamp and retool our defense. So going on defense wasn't the issue, especially since Spears is a starter and is playing relatively well. I could see wanting Luis Castillo over Spears, but Castillo had the steroid issue hanging over him.

While Burnett is playing pretty well right now, I think we could've used Khalif Barnes instead. However at that point we still thought Jacob Rogers was going to do something.

What scared me about the 2005 draft, was that the Cowboys and Chargers had the same needs. You guys took Ware/Spears and we took Merriman/Castillo. I can live with our picks. Ware is a stud and another stud that you guys have is Canty. Canty is a player and you guys got him in the 4th I believe. So a 3-4 front seven that has Ware, Spears and Canty is a very good to great building block to your new defensive scheme. Is Canty hurt right now? I am surprised that you guys do not talk about him more. The 'Boys did very good.:star:

Exactly. We both got players to fit our respective schemes well.
