Was Frederick Worth a First Round Pick?

Any response given up to this point isn't going to have any substance to it because we have no real body of work to base any decision on yet.

Incorrect. We have his body of work in college. We have the body of work of all Wisconsin OLine draftees. We have his combine body of work. We have his training camp body of work, and we have two games to analyze how he meshes with the line. So yes, I think he was worth it. Maybe I'll end up being wrong, but I don't think so.

This guys is good. Has been good. Will be good. May never be great, however, I think he could be a 10 year upper echelon center which is just fine considering his draft position.

If he continues to progress as he has at center thus far, I do not see why.

If Stephen and Jerry Jones view Felix Jones' tenure as a first round choice here as acceptable, the Hall of Fame is the limit for Frederick.

Certainly not.. im excited about his potential myself.

And it's been a while since the Cowboys drafted a player straight out of College that has that potential.

But, some have no reason to be excited because he did not help the Cowboys to the SB already.

LOL. I took that as a bit sarcastic but JJ definitely spun that one. You don't always hit on first round picks and I esp would be careful with picking RBs in the first round. Maybe JJ et al learned their lesson there.

If you think the premise is premature, then don't respond. I think it's pretty weak to not offer a substantial response and then criticize others for how they presented their thoughts.

I gave a substantial response to the OP's question. Not even the experts could give a more substantial response than I gave from having only seen a few snaps from Frederick in preseason. You're asking me to play Clairvoyant and predict the future of a CENTER who've we've only seen play a few snaps in preseason. Now if you asked me to make a prediction about Dez's future the day he was drafted I would have told you what I posted on the board immediately after the pick that he would be one of the best players the Cowboys have ever drafted. Heading into the 2012 season I predicted Dez would have 80+ catches for 1200+ yards and at least 10 TD's. With a talented skill position player it's easy to make a prediction but not with some fat guy on the OL who was rated a second or third round pick and who didn't even have a solid position when he was drafted.

We don't know if Frederick will remain at center the Cowboys may move him around. It's going to take at least a season to know whether Frederick was worth a #1. It's going to come down to his performance vs some of the other players the Cowboys could have drafted at #31. Frederick wasn't even considered the best player on the board at #31 so the jury is out on the pick until we see how he holds up during the regular season. I criticized the OP because he didn't present his thoughts when he first started the thread he waited until others gave their thoughts before offering his opinion. If someone claims they have an answer to a question and it's an easy answer then why hesitate to provide it?

This is all true, but if you're using it to justify the Cowboys decision it hinges on the assumption that you should TRY to get the players you like in a draft. I completely disagree with this assumption. Your goal on draft day is to get as much value out of the draft relative to your scheme (keeping in mind possible scheme change) and current team (keeping in mind trade possibilities and possibilities in free agency either now or in the future) as possible.

Pure BAA is the kind of thing you do when you don't have a weakness the size of the Golden Gate Bridge. The Cowboys had some OL issues to address. They still do. And if in their judgement he was the best available linemen for their scheme, they shouldn't give a [strawberry poptart] if other people don't like him.

I've now had a couple of days to think about this question, and the answer is still Hell Yeah.

In this case, his college pedigree is hard to ignore. Wisconsin has pushed out a huge number of quality NFL starters the last 10 years. Every college has a system. Theirs just happens to provide players with a skill set and techniques that translates well into the NFL. After that its up to the individual player, and Travis seems to have the smarts and talent to do very well.

And lets face it, the main reason he was considered "3rd round" was because of his 40 time, probably the most overrated stat for a O-lineman. You don't need one that runs 40 yards fast, he just needs to be quick in the first 10, particularly the first 3; after that it is a waste. So yes, at this point he certainly seems like a first round center.
