We got Lavar Edwards in a trade (conditional 7th) ***Merged***

My bet is we find out pretty quick what this guy can do. Last year we brought guys in during the week and they were playing that weekend. He's probably someone we had rated high on our board and picked up for low risk. I'm sure they were watching him during the preseason.

Sam doesn't have that quick twitch but neither did Suggs– not that Sam is on the same level as Suggs, but Sam might be the best pure-pass rusher this team can get out onto the field until Lawrence comes back.

Say what you will about Sam but the staff and the coaches did not feel this player was a fit for our defense. They had lots of 7th round picks and he was not selected by us.
Many on here just want names even though they are not ever going to come to this team. Sam may have a future, but it will most likely be on someone's practice squad
for a year. Move on to other pastures because Sam is not ever going to be a Cowboy....Media Circus maybe???

His knee issue started in 2008, when he tore cartilage, and had it removed instead of repaired (to get back on the field quicker). This began the degeneration of the cartilage that resulted in the microfracture procedure.

Good point.

I don't think Sam is a long-term answer and that in itself is potentially a very good reason not to claim him. I'm looking at the next 8 games.

The only way this is going to be solved is through the next draft and picking up another WDE prospect or two.

They had him as a fifth rounder on the leaked draft board.

Wow, that's not too bad to pick him up for what is probably low risk. I think we have a good relationship with the LSU coach if I remember right.

Out of all our recent moves, I like what I'm seeing in our recent trade for LaVar Edwards. He has the necessary physical tools and required quickness and speed to do well. His shortcomings have been related to his technique more than anything else. I believe he has the tools and talent to offer Marinelli something that he can work with and mold. We shall see.

I didn't get the feeling that he would be ready by game 3 based on his interview.

If Spencer isn't ready by game 3 it was a poor decision to take up a roster spot by putting him on the 53 man roster IMHO.

Agree. Even if he plays in game 3, I think it will be for a very limited number of snaps.

Even aside from the roster spot issue, I wouldn't want to push it with the injury that he had. His career could easily be over if he returns too soon and tweaks that knee again. I realize that he can't practice if he was on the PUP, but I would like to have seen him going 100% on the bag drills and blocking sleds for a few weeks prior to returning to practice. I get the impression that all he's done is work on the resistance cords.

He probably wasn't a good fit in the 3-4 either. This defense should give him a better chance, IMO.

Can we get a link to this interview?

Needing technique adjustments, now is a rotten time to come on board...but he also is a hustle guy, and that covers a lot of football related sins.

The run up to and through black 'n blue December is the important part. If Spencer can get into plain view by then...the price is well paid now.

Not too long ago, Pete Carroll was boasting about him to beat the band -- saying he's super smart, talented, quick study, etc, etc. Then, lo and behold -- he cuts him. Why? He had missed practically the entire camp w/a hammy and had too much catching up to do. Enter the Cowboys . . . he's VERY athletic and I'm hoping all those nice things Carroll had to say about him were factual. We'll see.

Oops, my bad -- I was talking about the latest acquisition, former Seahawks LB, Toomer, not LaVar Edwards. Color my face red.

What I like here, is that demands upon him are very low. That should allow both an adjustment period as well as getting healthy with the Cowboys.
