I agree Slate.

I think we do have the best secondary in football this year.

I thought we had the best CB group LAST year until TNew got hurt. Adding Smith and Sensabaugh at Safety sales me there as well.

Mickens is probably the 4th Cb and that's an embarrassment of riches.

Washed the sand out I see. :D Glad to see you're feeling better.

Secondary could be very good, but it will be young. Outside of KHam and TNew, these guys are still very inexperienced. Let's wait and see.

I'd lean more to agree with Slate, but it's early in the season. We finished 5th last season and our younger guys should only get better. Add in the pass rush that we should have and it only makes them better.

While I don't think we have the best secondary, but I do believe we have a very solid group of guys who outside of 2 or 3 players still have room to improve and get better, and that does excite me some to think about.

And yet we were 5th in the league. We played with two rookies,Ball and Killa in the seconday majority of the year.

We added two very good corners and Scandrick and Jenkins are only going to get better. And aTwo safeties that are very good and better than RW and Killa. Am I REALLY out of line if I think we'll have a better secondary?. Use some logic before you just spit out one liners and try to be cute.

Name two safeties that were worse than Roy and Davis and still play football.

Before you go and get nasty, I was a huge #31 fan. 'Til the end, mind you.

It should be against the law to use those two as a measuring stick for that position, on this football team. An "epic" stretch, IMO. Then you've got two rooks virtually self-annointed into the Probowl and two second year guys, with limited playing time mind you, becoming field generals. We still do NOT have a decent FS, IMO.

I like what we've done at the CB positions over the last few drafts. However, you could've warned a fella to don the waders before reading this post.

Yes. The football offseason is waaaaaayyy too long.

Ya I really don't see where I'm out of line

2008 starters and players
Newman-10 games and missed the first 5 games
Pacman-9 games played
Jenkins-Started right away as a rook
Scandrick-Another rook
Ball-Garbage. Played alot of nickel
Killa-started 9 games. Terrible safety
Hamlin-Played injured the whole year

and all of that and STILL 5th in passing defense

2009 starters and players
Newman- The main ingrediant for us having the best secondary. (along with pass rush)
Jenkins-Another year under his belt
Scandrick-Another year under his belt. Coming into his own as a slot CB
Deangelo Smith-Rook..>>>>Ball
Mike Mickens-Rook>>>>Pacman
Sensy- >>>>Killa and RW combined.
Mike Hamlin>>>Watkins and Killa

is that NOT an improved secondary?? Am I completely out of line saying we'll be 3-4 spots higher in pass defense with these better additions? It's not like we were 24th last year and I'm making some bold prediction of us all of sudden being 1st.

That's exactly my point. We just upgraded from those two horrible safeties. Why wouldn't we get better?

Not at all crazy about the draft but I absolutely loved the Deangelo Smith and Mike Mickens picks. Those guys can be bookends for the next 5-10 years just by themselves. I was just thinking about how disgusting our secondary is. I put it up against every team and I can't find a team that really compares. The Eagles make a good case though. I know we have two "rookies" but they were absolute STEALS and are above average corners.

Newman- Top 10 corner in this league. You can make a case he's top 5 when he's at the top of his game. True shutdown probowl caliber corner.

Jenkins-Started to come on late, andcan lock down recievers and be left on an island in coverage. Another year is just going to make him better. I see pro-bowl in the next 2 years or so for him.

Scandrick-One of, in not the best slot corners in the NFL. Could start on half of the teams in the NFL. Very good tackler for his size and sticks on the slot reciever like glue!

Deangelo Smith-Only a rookie but being a dime corner will allow him to not be thrown to the wolves right away. Is he a corner or safety? Either way he's got great talent and instincts. He's our 4th corner! He could start on this team if asked. He's that good!

Mike Mickens- Jerry needs to go to prison because he just committed grand theft larceny. Being the 5th corner will allow him to go on IR this year and come back full force next year. I've actually see reports that he'll be ready for minicamp. Everywhere I look he has a 2nd-3rd round grade. Reminds me alot of Scandrick. Speedy quick guy that can play in the slot or outside. Part the Cincy CB tandem with Deangelo. He was a finalist for the Thorp Award!(best corner in college) and he's our 5th corner!

Ken Hamlin- Some people on here like to bash him but I think he's an above average FS. He had a down year last year but he played lights out in 07. If he can get back to the 07 Hamlin then we're in good shape.

Sensy- The wildcard in all of this. Played on a less than talented defense last year with the Jags but has insane measurables. Athletic freak and with a pass rush like the Cowboys have he'll be able to make plays at SS. Can lay the lumber and also had 4 picks last year.

Micheal Hamlin- I actually liked this pick for the value. The law firm of Hamlin and Hamlin back in the secondary. Very servicable backup with starter potential. His game resembles Ken Hamlin alot with being a punishing hitter and fairly good cover guy. He'll be backing up Sensy and if he starts than that means he beat outt Sensy, which is saying ALOT as a rookie. Probably play 10-15 snaps a game in packages and formations.

We were 5th in pass defense last year and we actually got BETTER through this draft. Not to mention Newman missing 9 games last year. It's going to be extremely difficult to pass on us mixed with the pass rush.

Thoughts?
sorry to break this to ya..but the Commanders secondary is much better than yours..MUCH!!

My concerns..

Ken Hamlin - Not a ballhawk or a sure tackler. Maybe last year was an off year for him (fingers crossed).

Terrence Newman - Absolutely love him but the injury concerns remain.

Gerald Sensabaugh - An unkown for me. Hopefully, he doesn't blow up the way Hamlin did with his 1-year deal and we end up over paying to keep him. He has to be an upgarde over Roy in coverage though.

Mike Jenkins - I like him but don't wnat to see him duck tackles anymore.

Orlando Scandrick - A future star. I'm a bigtime fan.

Alan Ball & Courtney Brown - Great speed but not sure if they are football players.

Pat Watkins - He's had his chances and he really hasn't made a lasting impression. With drafting of Mike Hamlin he may be in trouble.

DeAngelo Smith - I like him and I really like that they might move him to Free Safety.

Mike Mickens - As bad a I feel about our draft he may be THE steal of the draft. 2nd round talent IMO. If healthy, he will move ahead of Alan Ball on the depth chart.

Mike Hamlin - Really did not like him at Clemson. I had high hopes but I watched him in 5 or 6 games his senior year and he never stood out. Reminded me of the safeties we already had in Ken Hamlin and Roy. Still, very good value in the 5th round and should challenge Pat Watkins for his roster spot.

Again, there is reason for hope that that the secondary will be improved, but this part was too funny coming from you, of all people. :laugh2:

wonder where some stupid posters get the idea that Newman is injury prone?
Of course we have some regular stupid posters who think the same.

This stupid poster would lean more towards Newman being fragile than injury prone. I think alot of people are banking on a guy that misses alot of games and is in his early thirties as your shut down guy. Fact is on a bad tackling team, he is at the top of the list for being a bad tackler. If he loses a step which could happen any time due to age or injury, it could get ugly out there.

Its amazing we haven't won a Super Bowl or two by now...

With having an elite Qb, elite runningback trio, elite receiving options, elite OL, elite pass rush, and the top secondary in the NFL.

Add to that an elite kicking unit....

I dont think your being a cheerleader at all SA, there is nothing wrong with being excited and positive about a secondary that has received a serious youth infusion.
Without even including this draft, our secondary would have been better with just a full offseason under the belts of Jenkins and Scandrick.
Now, fast forward to after this draft, and we addressed the secondary pretty heavy with Smith, Mickens, Hamlin, and Hodge.
Anyone that has a problem with even being a little optimistic about this group, needs to have their sertonin levels checked.

Amazing. Newman gets nicked up 2 years and he's weaker than cellophane.

Geniuses we have here at CZ.
