I dont think your being a cheerleader at all SA, there is nothing wrong with being excited and positive about a secondary that has received a serious youth infusion.

Without even including this draft, our secondary would have been better with just a full offseason under the belts of Jenkins and Scandrick.
Now, fast forward to after this draft, and we addressed the secondary pretty heavy with Smith, Mickens, Hamlin, and Hodge.
Anyone that has a problem with even being a little optimistic about this group, needs to have their sertonin levels checked.

Thank you. I can't believe I'm getting bashed and called a "fanatic" when I'm trying to be optimistic. By some of these peoples responses you'd think we sucked in the secondary and were like 30th in pass defense. It's amazing how some people just tune Newman off because he's happened to be injured a few years now. He could easily play all 16 games next year.

Save the smart *** comments and lame attempts at being funny for something else. Vintage and BBgun..eheemm!

I never "annoint", I just call it like I see it. I claimed we would have a top 5 passing defense last year at this time and we had our best corner out for half the season along with Pacman only playing in 7 games, and yet we still were 5th in the league. We will be first or second in passing defense this year. I only make bold statements when I know I'm right. Check back at this thread in 9 months.

That's cool to be enthused Slate... I'd rather see the Cowboys rank higher in run defense myself... Dallas can rush the passer lights out no doubt, but I want that crusher DL myself to smash big mouth Jacobs, trip Portis all day, and drill Westbrook.

Not at all crazy about the draft but I absolutely loved the Deangelo Smith and Mike Mickens picks. Those guys can be bookends for the next 5-10 years just by themselves. I was just thinking about how disgusting our secondary is. I put it up against every team and I can't find a team that really compares. The Eagles make a good case though. I know we have two "rookies" but they were absolute STEALS and are above average corners.

Newman- Top 10 corner in this league. You can make a case he's top 5 when he's at the top of his game. True shutdown probowl caliber corner.

Jenkins-Started to come on late, andcan lock down recievers and be left on an island in coverage. Another year is just going to make him better. I see pro-bowl in the next 2 years or so for him.

Scandrick-One of, in not the best slot corners in the NFL. Could start on half of the teams in the NFL. Very good tackler for his size and sticks on the slot reciever like glue!

Deangelo Smith-Only a rookie but being a dime corner will allow him to not be thrown to the wolves right away. Is he a corner or safety? Either way he's got great talent and instincts. He's our 4th corner! He could start on this team if asked. He's that good!

Mike Mickens- Jerry needs to go to prison because he just committed grand theft larceny. Being the 5th corner will allow him to go on IR this year and come back full force next year. I've actually see reports that he'll be ready for minicamp. Everywhere I look he has a 2nd-3rd round grade. Reminds me alot of Scandrick. Speedy quick guy that can play in the slot or outside. Part the Cincy CB tandem with Deangelo. He was a finalist for the Thorp Award!(best corner in college) and he's our 5th corner!

Ken Hamlin- Some people on here like to bash him but I think he's an above average FS. He had a down year last year but he played lights out in 07. If he can get back to the 07 Hamlin then we're in good shape.

Sensy- The wildcard in all of this. Played on a less than talented defense last year with the Jags but has insane measurables. Athletic freak and with a pass rush like the Cowboys have he'll be able to make plays at SS. Can lay the lumber and also had 4 picks last year.

Micheal Hamlin- I actually liked this pick for the value. The law firm of Hamlin and Hamlin back in the secondary. Very servicable backup with starter potential. His game resembles Ken Hamlin alot with being a punishing hitter and fairly good cover guy. He'll be backing up Sensy and if he starts than that means he beat outt Sensy, which is saying ALOT as a rookie. Probably play 10-15 snaps a game in packages and formations.

We were 5th in pass defense last year and we actually got BETTER through this draft. Not to mention Newman missing 9 games last year. It's going to be extremely difficult to pass on us mixed with the pass rush.

Thoughts?

Not even close. I like your enthusiasm though.

The OP must be on something to say we have the best secondary in the NFL. I don't think we even have the best secondary in our division, but I digress.

Not even close...wow...Not even close? I can understand a simple "no i don't think so"...but "not even close"? Please try to attempt to explain. Keep in mind we were 5th in pass defense last year, but go head.

Top 5 in yards allowed isn't all that special for me.

We had all those sacks and very few INT's and FF from the secondary.

And tell me when you remember someone from our secondary laying someone out?

That isn't 'Top 5' in my opinion.

I have to agree..
As much as I have defended this draft, I would have to say that if there is a weakness in this D it is the soft underbelly in the middle.
Maybe JR Siavi can somehow step up his game and be accountable at his tenured age of 30, and be able to spell Rat in the hole for a series or two.
That is the biggest area of concern in my book. Keeping Rat fresh in the 4th, and finding a capable nose that can give him a breather now and again.
I was hoping that we drafted a "Trash Can Full Of Dirt" type like Donnell Scott when he was still there, but it just didnt happen, so lets role with what we got and hope someone emerges in camp that can play nose other than Rat full time for 4.

I can remember several times when Scandrick and Hamlin have layed people out. I also remember Jenkins laying out Alex Smith in the Bucs game. I think Sensabaugh and Smith are going to add some playmaking ability that we didn't have last year. Huge upgrades IMO.

If Jenkins pans out than this secondary has a chance to be one of the best in the league.

Im confident Scandrick is a franchise guy and what he did as a rookie was remarkable.

Ken Hamlin is a heck of a player.

Newman is Newman

Our only question mark is Sensabaugh and by all indications we evidently upgraded with him over Roy Williams.

No kidding.

Wasn't he the same guy going ballistic yesterday during the draft?

Like I told that other chump. Go find where I bashed Mickens and Smith. I can't wait to see what you find. This should be fun.

If ANYTHING I endorsed those picks.

Easy Chief. No controversy here.

I just was noting that yesterday you were more or less spelling the eternal doom of our beloved team, and today, you are here espousing the greatness of our secondary.

Nothing more than an observation.
