I never "annoint", I just call it like I see it. I claimed we would have a top 5 passing defense last year at this time and we had our best corner out for half the season along with Pacman only playing in 7 games, and yet we still were 5th in the league. We will be first or second in passing defense this year. I only make bold statements when I know I'm right. Check back at this thread in 9 months.

good post

not If Hamlin played like he did last year

we don't know what Sensabaugh will bring

we need to force a hell of a lot more turnovers

Two things: 1) Could we maybe see a couple of these guys play first before we break out the "anointing Oil"? By the way Jenkins hasnt set the world on fire yet as far as I'm concerned.

2) Newman is as about as durable as cellophane. He is in his 30's and on the downside. The chances of him starting 16 games are about the same as "W" getting a third term.

Easy Chief. No controversy here.

I just was noting that yesterday you were more or less spelling the eternal doom of our beloved team, and today, you are here espousing the greatness of our secondary.

Nothing more than an observation.

Nah, I'm not going to sit back and watch someone call me out and open their big mouth. Calling me bi-polar? Maybe instead of instinctly writing and just agreeing with someone maybe you would have noticed that I thought those LB picks were reaches and hated the Beuhler pick. What does have to do with the secondary core? I loved what they did there.

UMM this secondary is a work in progress.

our safeties are still basically below average. Hopefully sensabaugh can at least tackle. that would be one that can.

OP: no problem if you call it like you see it.

Just realize that some of the responses you're getting are other people calling it like they see it. You just provided a convenient target. :D

I like the picks, but they gotta play 3/4s of the season before I start getting all excited. This is a different level from what they're used to. Lots of tricks they don't know yet.

It takes a lot to have the "best in the league". Nothing's proven yet, except that you like what you see.

Newman will be a force for the next 3-4 years. Pulling a muscle or two is not being injury prone. Did we forget how he man-handled Moss when he got back? Manhandled his ***!!!

Somebody said Hamlin played injured most of the season, yeah I forgot about that little tidbit. The whole team was beat up it seemed. This year is a do over for everybody including Hamlin, there's a lot to be hopeful for, a lot.

These rooks are all winners and one of them is a turn over causing machine. Yep these kids will bring some fire to the camp and churn this roster. Bye bye deer in headlights Patrick Watkants and sissy Brown.

But all of this means nothing if our offense doesn't win the time of possession battle. We have got to establish a decent running game. Our best defense is a better offense. The defense just needs to maintain our lead but the offense has got to produce. This could very well be the year we break the playoff drought....:starspin

11-5 is my new prediction for the season...

We improved our secondary with this draft and I think Jenkins will be an upgrade over Henry at RCB. Newman and Scandrick can run with anybody in the league and I expect them to blanket Jackson and Maclin this year. Sensabaugh is faster than Williams and can definitely cover, I'm just not sure if he can lay the wood too. Hamlin was kinda the glue last year when Newman and Williams got banged up and that glue came un-done against the Ravens. I think he can relax a little more with a vet like Sensabaugh playing beside him and not Williams or Davis. Davis and Watkins are strictly special teamers now and should never play on defense again IMO. I hope they enjoy the rest of their careers...elsewhere.

Not at all crazy about the draft but I absolutely loved the Deangelo Smith and Mike Mickens picks. Those guys can be bookends for the next 5-10 years just by themselves. I was just thinking about how disgusting our secondary is. I put it up against every team and I can't find a team that really compares. The Eagles make a good case though. I know we have two "rookies" but they were absolute STEALS and are above average corners.

Newman- Top 10 corner in this league. You can make a case he's top 5 when he's at the top of his game. True shutdown probowl caliber corner.

Jenkins-Started to come on late, andcan lock down recievers and be left on an island in coverage. Another year is just going to make him better. I see pro-bowl in the next 2 years or so for him.

Scandrick-One of, in not the best slot corners in the NFL. Could start on half of the teams in the NFL. Very good tackler for his size and sticks on the slot reciever like glue!

Deangelo Smith-Only a rookie but being a dime corner will allow him to not be thrown to the wolves right away. Is he a corner or safety? Either way he's got great talent and instincts. He's our 4th corner! He could start on this team if asked. He's that good!

Mike Mickens- Jerry needs to go to prison because he just committed grand theft larceny. Being the 5th corner will allow him to go on IR this year and come back full force next year. I've actually see reports that he'll be ready for minicamp. Everywhere I look he has a 2nd-3rd round grade. Reminds me alot of Scandrick. Speedy quick guy that can play in the slot or outside. Part the Cincy CB tandem with Deangelo. He was a finalist for the Thorp Award!(best corner in college) and he's our 5th corner!

Ken Hamlin- Some people on here like to bash him but I think he's an above average FS. He had a down year last year but he played lights out in 07. If he can get back to the 07 Hamlin then we're in good shape.

Sensy- The wildcard in all of this. Played on a less than talented defense last year with the Jags but has insane measurables. Athletic freak and with a pass rush like the Cowboys have he'll be able to make plays at SS. Can lay the lumber and also had 4 picks last year.

Micheal Hamlin- I actually liked this pick for the value. The law firm of Hamlin and Hamlin back in the secondary. Very servicable backup with starter potential. His game resembles Ken Hamlin alot with being a punishing hitter and fairly good cover guy. He'll be backing up Sensy and if he starts than that means he beat outt Sensy, which is saying ALOT as a rookie. Probably play 10-15 snaps a game in packages and formations.

We were 5th in pass defense last year and we actually got BETTER through this draft. Not to mention Newman missing 9 games last year. It's going to be extremely difficult to pass on us mixed with the pass rush.

Thoughts?
Before you guys call me an eagles fan (which I am not), I remember a similar post last year. We are better than the Eagles secondary. How did that turn out? The secondary is only as good as the pass rush.

This sounds very familar.

I think I remember we all said this last season too.

I am not calling anything about this team 'best in the league' at all this season.

I am tired of doing that.

This season isn't about talk. It's about the walk as far as I am concerned.

Yeah starting with the guy in your avatar...

maybe the reason we had the 5th ranked pass defense was that teams figured they could run on the defense. At the end of the year the defense gave up 4.2 yards per carry.

Also that pass defense would be horrible if not for D Ware causing havoc. Even then we managed a pathetic 8 int's last year which put us at 30th in the league.
