I don't hate our secondary's potential, but it's entirely unwise to call it the best in the league.

I know it's been said, but you're basing way too much of your belief on a handful of mid-round draft picks.

Had we walked away from this draft with three DBs taken in the top 2 rounds, I might allow myself to become immersed into the hype of unknown rookies. But come on. We'll be fortunate if most of the guys you reference simply make the team and play a small, small role on defense.

I'm just defending Newman from the people in denial on here, the haters who spin crazy opinions or are intellectually chanllenged in regards to cornerback play.

I realize the Chargers won a playoff game, but their secondary, like Dallas' special teams, was terrible.

Plus, they played in a weak division. They didn't last long in the playoffs last year.

Not at all crazy about the draft but I absolutely loved the Deangelo Smith and Mike Mickens picks. Those guys can be bookends for the next 5-10 years just by themselves. I was just thinking about how disgusting our secondary is. I put it up against every team and I can't find a team that really compares. The Eagles make a good case though. I know we have two "rookies" but they were absolute STEALS and are above average corners.

Newman- Top 10 corner in this league. You can make a case he's top 5 when he's at the top of his game. True shutdown probowl caliber corner.

Jenkins-Started to come on late, andcan lock down recievers and be left on an island in coverage. Another year is just going to make him better. I see pro-bowl in the next 2 years or so for him.

Scandrick-One of, in not the best slot corners in the NFL. Could start on half of the teams in the NFL. Very good tackler for his size and sticks on the slot reciever like glue!

Deangelo Smith-Only a rookie but being a dime corner will allow him to not be thrown to the wolves right away. Is he a corner or safety? Either way he's got great talent and instincts. He's our 4th corner! He could start on this team if asked. He's that good!

Mike Mickens- Jerry needs to go to prison because he just committed grand theft larceny. Being the 5th corner will allow him to go on IR this year and come back full force next year. I've actually see reports that he'll be ready for minicamp. Everywhere I look he has a 2nd-3rd round grade. Reminds me alot of Scandrick. Speedy quick guy that can play in the slot or outside. Part the Cincy CB tandem with Deangelo. He was a finalist for the Thorp Award!(best corner in college) and he's our 5th corner!

Ken Hamlin- Some people on here like to bash him but I think he's an above average FS. He had a down year last year but he played lights out in 07. If he can get back to the 07 Hamlin then we're in good shape.

Sensy- The wildcard in all of this. Played on a less than talented defense last year with the Jags but has insane measurables. Athletic freak and with a pass rush like the Cowboys have he'll be able to make plays at SS. Can lay the lumber and also had 4 picks last year.

Micheal Hamlin- I actually liked this pick for the value. The law firm of Hamlin and Hamlin back in the secondary. Very servicable backup with starter potential. His game resembles Ken Hamlin alot with being a punishing hitter and fairly good cover guy. He'll be backing up Sensy and if he starts than that means he beat outt Sensy,which is saying ALOT as a rookie. Probably play 10-15 snaps a game in packages and formations.

We were 5th in pass defense last year and we actually got BETTER through this draft. Not to mention Newman missing 9 games last year. It's going to be extremely difficult to pass on us mixed with the pass rush.

My thoughts are you are stretching it here by a long shot. I love scandrick He's the guy I look forward to see the most. but best Slot corner already??? I dont mind newman but He's always lingering. Jenkins is another unproven youngster that has showed flashes, nothing more nothing less.

sansy I like. He was solid with the jags. He will be an improvement IMO.

I think we have a solid secondary, but I'll have to be sold on the safeties because I was a Hamlin supporter up until last season when he got his fat pay check and went on a mental vacation.

I do like Newman and Scandrick, I think Jenkins needs to man up and stop being a wimp, get his butt up in their and tackle somebody.

i don't think it is a long shot at all, we were a very good secondary last year, and only got better, add in the fact that wade will run the D all season, we were much improved once he took over.. pressure will be sick this year.
and the turnovers will come.. trust me.

the people that act as though it is inconceivable, well, i don't think i credit their football knowledge much.

Best secondary in the league I doubt that. I think a secondary can only be so good with out having a consistent pass rush. D ware consistent he's great we need someone else on the other side off the ball to step it up. Spencer hasn't lived up to his draft status so far yet I'm not ready to throw him under the bus this is his year though. I don't see how there's any chance of greg ellis being a cowboy so I won't factor him into the equation.

With the concerns about pass rush aside lets break down player by player.

Tnewman straight ballin.
Scandrick was superb his rookie season should start along side newman.
Mickens hopefully he can be the scandrick of this draft.
Smith hopefully he can be the scandrick of this draft.
Jenkins I knew I was forgetting someone....we should of never drafted this punk.

Mickens tore his meniscus last year and was out part of the season. Otis Wiley of MSU also tweaked a knee and was out part of the season and went UNDRAFTED: totally shocked me. Wish we would've signed him as a free agent.

Well, you are making a case that we are the best secondary in the league? First snafu I see in your reasoning is you're using rookies in your argument. We don't even know they'll make the team. Even if they were the best at their position in college "which they weren't even close" good college play doesn't always translate to NFL success. I'm not going to go through our guys nitpicking at strengths and weaknesses. I just look at the secondaries of other teams in the division like the Giants, Commanders, and Eagles. Each of those guys can make the same argument you are that they are the best.
