I would say the same thing about Chas Green but Green will probably be inactive this entire year.

So you can pick today..Chas Green or Matt Jones?

The guy may poop the bed for all I know. But he is off to a promising start and looks like he belongs out there.

You were talking about how great Jones was doing. That was who I was referring.

This is well put; true. I'm still on the record saying Coleman and Ajayi were terribly overrated on this board. I do (still) believe Yeldon, Abdullah and both Johnsons will make for good-great RBs in the league. Who the hell knows about Gurley and Gordon- we never had a realistic chance of drafting either anyhow.

Not taking the bait!!!!!!

The main concern with a rookie RB is can he pass block and recognize blocking assignments. I think that was the main impetus behind not taking RB. I think they would have, had the draft worked out that way.

From the sounds of things, outside of McFadden, the rest of our RB's were having issues with pass blocking as well.

Proceed with Caution! (title may be click bait)

I am on record arguing that while I am always a proponent of bringing in a game changing player at a position of need or shallow depth (perhaps RB), I did not necessarily rue not drafting a RB. Part of this is because RBs are very much a hit and miss draft position. Secondly, even when you hit, rookie RBs are very rarely season changers.

Now this was a deep draft for running backs, so odds were better this year that a season changer might exist somewhere.

Its still early, but the early favorite for RB most likely to make Cowboy fans rue looks to be Ameer Abdullah from Nebraska drafted #54.

Soooooooooo. Should we have drafted Ameer? Well, let's see. First, drafting Ameer would mean no Randy Gregory. Bye Rand! Also, trading up from #60 to #53 (if we could have found a trade partner) would have probably cost us a 4th rounder (maybe a 3rd?). So that would have meant no Damien Wilson. And assuming that Ameer is all that and a can of soup, there would be less carries for Randle and McFadden.

So using math
is Ameer - (Randle + McFadden) > Randy Gregory + Damien Wilson?

Using my football calculator to solve this equation, I would have to say

a. absolutely
b. probably so
C. PROBABLY NOT *ding ding ding
d. absolutely not

So, even with a potential game changer like Ameer, taking in all the variables that have yet to be determined, it looks like the front office still made the right decision. So, but you just can't RUE yet baby!

No.

We did screw up the draft. We should have gotten a runnung back. All season it will be our achillies hill. Last year it was our best attribute. We better hope our defense makes up the difference.

And how good was Randle supposed to be when we took him in the fourth round? For that matter, should other backs taken later in drafts never have been given that opportunity?

I believe in competition, the more you have, the better chance you have of finding a good player instead of settling for the best of a bad bunch. I liked Mike Davis and Buck Allen in this draft and would have taken a chance on either knowing that they could fail, just like any other player, or they could give us a better option than what we've got. If I couldn't have gotten those two for some reason, I would have taken David Cobb.

For that matter, some are saying we should pick up that UDFA who spurned us for Seattle if he's cut, and we could have gotten him in the seventh round. The point is, the draft presented us with opportunities to improve a potential weakness and we didn't take them. Now, if the scouts say the players we took were much higher rated than the backs we didn't, that's fine, but they better be right because we are more questionable at RB than some of the other positions we chose to draft in the later rounds.

Well the jones obviously felt they did not need Murray, or any RB in the draft !! :omg:
They felt that thier OL was so darn good they could go with randle, and then jerry got his college fav DMC , thinking he is
still as good as he was in college.

this is one thing I cant blame on JG as he wanted to keep Murray.
They may pick up a RB or 2 from final cuts, and they will back up the 3 we have.

And like jj said if run game stalls, they can just pass more to open it up !!

Now the thing is if you have to pass more to get the run game going, your basically a passing team, not balanced like last year.
And that will change many things, plus they dont have the big back to punish teams .

Now I dont know about randle and dmc, or dunbar, we just havent seen them play as starters, or get a lot of carries, so we just have to wait
and see how they do, and can they avoid injurys, will they leave more meat on the bone ?? Who knows, I cant wait to see just how they do.

PS game one none of them played, so maybe we get some kind of idea PS 2 . but really we wont know till after about 4 regular games.

I think your choice of the word "concern" is an excellent one. As opposed to "panic".

We only have to be "adequate"... "Sufficient" with our running backs.

WE HAVE THAT!

Next question?!?!?!?

Lol

I hate to say it but it looks like the Commanders have a good rookie back in Matt Jones.....I wont lie...I never heard of him and don't remember him even being mentioned before the draft.
We need a power back and this guy is 6 foot 2 and 230 Lbs.
They picked him up in the 3rd round late.

So far:
2nd game 8 carries for 44 yards. 5.5 per carry and a TD
1st game 5 carries 38 yards, 7.6 per carry.

He has looked the part also. The guy runs similar to Marshawn Lynch.

He is looking better than Chas Green at this point.
I agree that 5.5 was against detroit too.
