What did the 49ers see in Lance that proved to be non existent?

Ask JimmyG about Lance.

Lance took the QB1 job from him.
Lance didn't take any job from Jimmy G. The 9ers were desperate to replace JG and had what they thought was their future going forward and waiting in the wings was their future with a brunch of college awards in TL. But, after just 8 games and a ton of practices with TL at the helm the 9ers were smart enough to know that LT might not be the answer for them and drafted Brock Purdy with the last pick in the 2022 draft. In the short time Purdy was with the 9ers he must have shined like a brand-new shiny penny because after TL went down with his injury, BP jumped ahead of the line and never looked back. Maybe TL didn't get a real chance to show off his skills, but what he did show the 9ers wasn't enough to beat out BP or Sam Darnold and knew if they kept him around he might turn in a cancer on the team, but what was really strange about the TL situation was nobody wanted to trade for him, NOBODY, until JJ came knocking with a 4th rd pick. Let's see how much rope they give him before he hangs the Cowboys and himself...............

He desperately needs playing time. Play in the Arena league and you will learn how to get the ball out quick or you career will be over. Or go play in Canada and get some experience for 2 years and come back.
I totally agree, but we all know that this kid doesn't want to go that route because there is a good change that he may not get another opportunity that the Cowboys are going to give him.

Not hard to look good in drills, OTA's, with no pads and no contact. Time will tell.

From what I read about the situation - after the demotion in preseason, Lance requested a trade.
GM Lynch then looked through through his "roledex" alphabetically;
Probably thought Arizona and Atlanta had no interest.
Baltimore offered a 6th round pick, Buffalo did the same.
All the 'C City' teams (Panthers, Bears, Bengals, Browns) didn’t need him = passed (especially with that $5.2 mil guaranteed salary from his rookie contract).
Next up ----Big D.
Jones took the call - and offered a 4th pick in 2024.
Read Detroit was interested also.

Especially since small school athletic QB's keep failing en masse. Every once in a great while one actually turns out and then NFL teams seem to just forget all the failures in this strategy and the madness starts all over again. Who's the last small school 1st round QB who actually panned out? Wentz? Ick.
93 starts, a winning record as a starter, has a Super Bowl ring, plays for the Chiefs. He’s made a fortune. Not too bad for a FCS quarterback.

The kid can’t throw for accuracy…can’t read a defense to save himself and now we are trying to adjust his throwing motion….he is like a high school kid and nothing close to a pro… we even got fleeced giving up a 4th round pick
Trey Lance was better in his first 4 starts than Jordan Love was in his first 4 starts...

Lance would have started more than 4 if not for a season ending injury.

The whole premise of the OP is presumptive nonsense.

Lance got Wally Pipped after breaking his leg and Purdy beat him out clean the next offseason. Shanahan went out of his way in his press conference following the trade to state the exact opposite of the OP. His coach spoke to circumstance and himself.

Preseason cannot get here soon enough.

Jerry also thinks Dak can win a Super Bowl, and he can't beat good teams, can't play on grass, can't read off his first target, doesn't know when to throw a ball away. So I don't know why it shocks people that Jerry would trade for a guy like Lance. Dak is better, but neither can get it done.

2 -TWO - more wins than losses as an NFL starting quarterback __47-45-1.
After being a league star \ MVP candidate during most of his 2nd season - earning second-team All-Pro Honors for the Eagles' 2017 regular season - Wentz was on the sidelines with an injury as the backup QB led the team to its first SB Championship.
Since then - a journeyman in the league ...and now is the backup QB in KC... perhaps getting a 2nd NFL Title ring mostly standing on the sidelines if the Chiefs 3-Peat in 2024.
And as far as making a fortune- an NFL player in the 21st century who is productive enough to be in the league for at least 3-4 years (active roster down to the practice squad) will have earned enough money that would be considered substantial wealth compared to 2/3rds of the Earth's population (if they don't squander it away).
Carson Wentz -- much success monetarily thus far in the league- but his playing resume is meh to this date.
And let's not forget he was the 2nd overall pick in the 2016 draft.

Playing against mostly backups and bubble players in preseason isn’t that good an indicator. You need to see a QB with starters against other starters in meaningful games to make a determination. It’s a big jump from preseason to the regular season with so few starters playing in preseason these days.
Not a good indicator only to fans. Because they do not understand what the coaches are looking for in most situations The coaches think otherwise. Such as … did the player do what he was supposed to do. Did he stay in his assignments.

It is not always how a player looks against 1st or 2nd. Or 3rd team players. Does a player understand the playbook. And when mistakes happen, they can correct them.

Someone is going to ask, so I will get it out of the way. Why did Dak wait until year 9 to start working on his game? Is it because he has declared that he no longer plays for money?
He seen Trey Lance practice and got scared.

Shannahan has the 49ers in three straight nfc championship appearance so are you suggesting that we have a better offensive coordinator and offensive scheme than the 49ers?
Well weren’t the Cowboys the highest rated offense in the NFL last year?

To be honest we haven't seen enough of him yet to determine anything. This pre-season will be a good indicator tho.
You don’t think the Niners saw enough to know he’s not a starter in the NFL?

Still too many physical tools and too much talent to just give up on ... another man's trash is another man's treasure..

My top questions are:
- Will this coach staff best qualified for Lance than a Shanahan ?
- And is this gonna be just a one year chance for both HC and QB .. but deals are up at season's end.

The bottom line for me is if the 49ers can’t mk Trey Lance a decent NFL QB, having some of the best offensive minds, then there’s little chance we can. We could have used that 4th round pick to fill holes in free agency. Most NFL analysts were puzzled by the move but here in Dallas no idea is too insane to entertain, right?
Some NFL players take more time to mature and develop than others ... Niners apparently could not afford to wait ,

I want to see your official source they drafed purdy because they were "smart enough to know lance might not the answer". What sf official said that? You just sayin it is not what sf thought.

You giving credit to sf for being so smart for bailing out of lance, after giving up 3 1st rounders for him...does not compute.

If dallas did that this , the forum surely would implode.

But dallas giving up a 4th to see if he can be salvaged, is somehow even worse.

We live in strange times.

They will not admit that Purdy was drafted to see if he could be Lance”s back up. As they already knew they were moving on from Garappolo. Then the 2 injuries to Lance happened. As they lucked into Purdy looking decent. But we seen how Purdy struggled when he did not have Debo or CMC out there.

Some of our fans fear what Lance may become.
