Actually, that's why I have a job. It's for those who DON'T read them and find out they NEED to read them AFTER they've sat for hours trying to figure it out...

LMAO!!!

WG, my electrical engineer turned IT specialist did a training in Dallas last December and I wanted to hook him up with Ad. Of course my Rhode Island geographical perspective didn't quite match up with the realities of Texas travel time, so it didn't happen. But I'd have loved to have gotten these two nerd-jock clones together. I can just imagine the conversation.

Maybe next time...

...and hey, there are those of us who would be in a nuthouse if not for the wonderful instructions you folks write.. and we STILL GET IT WRONG!! :p:

You are so right. My first job was at an oil and gas company and I had to translate these engineers design specs into step-by-step procedure docs for techs on the floor on how to build whatever they had designed. I swear, sometimes my eyes would just glaze over when they would try to explain something. The same thing still happens occasionally when I start talking to some of the guys in our Network Ops dept. So to prevent that, I ask them VERY specific questions. They would go on and on if I let them. :D

Oh and travel time in Texas can be a bear to decipher. You can drive 8 hours one way and still be inside the Texas border. Trust me I know.

And if YOU hadn't been able to TRANSLATE for the 99.99999 pecent of the population who hasn't a CLUE what they're mumbling about, where would THEY be? :)

You know I think it is more of a man thing...not just an engineer thing.

Not all men mind you but many men.

Depends on what I am doing if I even bother to open the instruction book....and at times, like you said, after messing a long time I realize it is time to open up th instructions.
It's not just men, Brain. I've got girl friends who just don't read them. My friend won't set up the voice mail on her cell phone because she doesn't know how. I said read the manual. Her response: "I should do that, huh"

Had a minor car problem: like setting the clock on her radio. My question: Did you read the car manual? Her response: "Of course not. I'll get my brother to do it"

Not reading instructions is a universal thing I've come to accept. I don't mind as long as whatever company I'm working for, respects what I do.

Manual, what's that?

I once had a Ford Taurus that I drove for two years on the wrong "D". The big one with the circle just looked too "special".

Damn Ford...transmission went fast..I guess that's why they say FORD stands for Fix Or Repair Daily. :p:

Actually, I'm a software developer posing as an system admin because there are no good programming positions in this town. I'd much rather be writing code.

LOL I remember leaving basic in El Paso and heading to AIT in San Antonio on a bus.

There was nothing on either side of the road...just barren and seeminly an endless straight road.

Fell alseep and woke up and it was the exact same scenery lol.

We stopped midways to eat at some small hole in the wall diner that looked like it was part of set for Gunsmoke...kept waiting for Miss Kitty, Sam and Festus to pop out of the back room lol.

6 months ago I got back into the construction business but this time I work on the contracts rather than the projects.

I am a writer for a small film studio that does documentaries. In particular I write about the Old West and gunfights, etc. I have been pitching one of my scripts as a full length feature film. I've had some good nibbles, but no bite yet. I have a book offer on the table and have ideas for about 4 or 5 that aren't already written. Prior to taking my new job I was on the site in between writing stints.

I invest in Real Estate. That is how I am building my retirement.

My wife being a native Texan got a big laugh out of him asking me that.

You have been dealing with inferior engineers. The best designs are intuitive and should be able to be put together without reading a long winded novel posing as instruction manuals. :) If you can't look at the picture on the box to put it together then what's the point? :D
