...In my opinion, there are two possibilities. One of them would be poor management of both the salary cap and veteran free agency. The other would be poor coaching with an emphasis on gameplanning.
Explanation #1: poor management of the cap and free agency. Especially the cap IMO. The Cowboys have had pretty good top line talent in recent years. Lots of good, yet high priced starters. Depth has been severely lacking. Your 7th best OL matters for example, or your 4th best WR. The team had several horrible years of dead money during the Garrett era too.

The team has done a good job drafting though, and I think has generally improved at cap management. Depth has improved recently, and increased attention to the defense has paid off also.

The first super bowl vs BUFF was advertised as their #1 O vs our #1 D. I seriously don't get how people missed that!!!!!

And the D made the plays to turn the game around in both of the two vs BUFF. They had 9 TOs in the first one. 9. That's unheard of, especially in the playoffs. Our first TD was set up by a James Washington INT. The 2nd TD came when Haley sacked Kelly for a fumble which Jimmie Jones plucked out of the air and ran in.

In the 2nd one vs BUFF, they led 13-6 at halftime. In BUFF's first drive of the 2nd half, Lett forced a fumble which James Washington ran in for a TD.

D plays changed the tone of both games. Especially since Aikman was suffering mightily from a concussion in the 3rd qtr of the champ game. That could explain why DALL was pretty inept Offensively in the first half!!!
I believe our #1 D that year had no pro-bowlers either.

There is something that nobody in here wants to acknowledge and it’s called coaching

It means that ownership has done well with hiring and retaining the best scouts in the game. It also means that the GM has failed in other aspects of personnel and coaching decisions.

People in here are quick to discredit the pro bowl..and that’s fine, it is a joke

But there are no two ways about it. The cowboys are a better team than the eagles when it comes to drafting. This thread has validity

Says everything you need to know about a crap game that has nothing to do with winning real football games.

It shows that the marketing/hype machine is working well at selling a substandard product.

Since 2000, the Cowboys have drafted a total of 30 players that have made at least one Pro Bowl. These players have combined for 92 Pro Bowls. During those same, most recent 23 drafts, the Eagles have selected 21 players with at least one Pro Bowl for a combined total of 48 Pro Bowls.

The Cowboys have a third more Pro Bowlers with almost double the combined Pro Bowls compared to the Eagles.

Furthermore:

Cowboys drafted since 2000 have produced 180 times that a draft pick was the starter for a particular season. In total, they participated in 3515 games

The Eagles, meanwhile, have produced 132 starts for their picks in the same drafts with a total participation of 2469 games.

And yet:

The Eagles have made the playoffs 15 times since 2000, playing in 7 conference championship games and 2 Super Bowls.

The Cowboys have made the playoffs 9 times since 2000.

How is this possible?

The Cowboys looked to be drafting better than the Eagles since 2000. The Eagles seem to do better with less. Again, how is this possible?

In my opinion, there are two possibilities. One of them would be poor management of both the salary cap and veteran free agency. The other would be poor coaching with an emphasis on gameplanning.

Obviously, the Cowboys had superior talent in the draft. Considering the results, this could be a case of coaches not knowing how to deploy their weapons, poor strategy. Then again, it could be poor free agency choices, trades, or contracts. It could be very poor cap management.

Clearly, it's not a matter of talent from the draft. What do you think it is?
We have had good rosters, but subpar coaching due to Jerry’s ego. And I’m supposed to like this guy? No.

I wonder if Jerry still thinks if he gets lucky and wins one that people will actually suddenly regard him as a “football guy?” No.

Sorry but I don’t look at the small success’ he has had (post Jimmys team that is) as a positive. I wonder how much better we could have done if Parcells was preparing the 2007 team instead of Wade, who claimed the bye was the same as winning a playoff game….as one very, very small example.

Garrett was hideously awful, and a waste of a full decade of our lives which isn’t coming back. I will NEVER forgive Jerry for that and he truly deserves to never win again for that alone, although it’s far from the only reason.

It’s shameful, but it’s to where Jerry’s pain is a reasonable consolation when I lose too.

Gets away with it because he buys and intimidates people. Private life is a disgrace. What if karma is actually real? Well then thanks Jerry for taking us all down with you.

What a great man! Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!

Our FO is, unfortunately, being run by two egotistical imposters who choose to fake being capable "football guys." Their ideas of how to run a football team are sorely misjudged, solely due to their desperate unwillingness to admit that they're unfit for the responsibility they hold. Poor judgment is the sole curse of their football planning and operating ways. Somehow, they manage to convince themselves otherwise. False pride can easily become a dangerous thing. Unfortunatley, it leads many egocentric leaders to hapless failure.

Yep
Just look at meaningful information

ZERO SB wins since 1996
ZERO SB appearances since 1996
ZERO NFCCG wins since 1996
ZERO NFCCG appearances since 1996
ZERO back to playoff wins since 1996

That’s ‘meaningful’ information
Well if you and others want to feel miserable go ahead.
I am looking forward to what could possibly be a great season.
But go ahead and rain on this post as well. I am sure you have a canned answer. You all cut and paste them.

If the answer is not that the draft is only 1 arrow in the quiver and trades and free agency are equally important, then there is no answer. Also for your consideration is the Eagles have relied on a strong defense for a while now. They have drafted 5 DTs in the fist round since 2000. The Cowboys have drafted 0. I think it is hard to argue that teams need to be strong up the middle.

Right, because after 30 years of owning and running a professional football team they learn nothing at all from any of the people that worked under them either in the past like bill Parcells Jimmy Johnson amongst others who were at least good to great at their jobs I mean even wade Phillips was a great defensive coordinator all the way up till today they got guys like Will Mcclay and a lot of very good scouts and you got Mike McCarthy and Dan Quinn here NOW and you're saying that they've learned absolutely nothing and they're running the team into the ground and are the worst team in football?

Id say that it shows they can put talent on the field and the fact that recently they've made a lot of changes much quicker and we are in the middle of a nice little run started here that could finally pay off.

It tells me Pro Bowls, voted in part by fans, mean nothing. If you think Pro Bowl votes are draft grades that's another matter, but can we stop looking for excuses?

The Cowboys have two constants since their last Super Bowl - Jerry and Stephen Jones in charge of personnel decisions.

It's pretty damn obvious, unless you're looking for scapegoats to make you feel better. They are the problem, and they are still in charge.

But get excited about Cooks and Gilmore. Surely, the two old clowns have cracked the code. I'll believe it when I see it. Not before.
Yikes. I don’t know that I could be an admin for a forum over a sports team that I believe in my heart has absolutely 0 chance to win a championship every year. Seems like a masochist

MM has some faults, sure, but we haven't seen a roster builder on this level since Tuna. Although, I must say, I'm still puzzling mightily over the Nashon Wright pick. Guess everyone gets one booboo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You’d have to ask Dan Quinn about that.

The Pro Bowl voting is one third fans, one third coaches and one third players which means that 67% of the voting is by those that play the game and those that coach the game in the NFL.

Discussing the Eagles is an absolute necessity if we want to discuss the Cowboys opportunity to get to the Super Bowl. They have to get through the Eagles for step #1, which is winning the division. There is just no way around it.

NFC East rivals will always be a hot topic of discussion for Cowboys fans.

And some of us mature enough to do that, and some of us aren’t.
