even Carter. He gave them 10 ppg in 25 minutes. Not great, but not terrible either. He played a whole lot more defesne than in the past too.

They need some more firepower though.

as for Brand...
he wants to go to Dallas and is good friends with Kaman--who is also friends with Dirk. Those three would make a nice frontline rotation along with Brandon Wright.

I'm skeptical of the Brand thing. I haven't heard anything from really reliable sources that say he is very likely to be here.

every report says he is likely to be in dallas but nothing is done til it is done.
bids are sealed.

dallas is expected go 5.3m or so. someone could easily beat that if they want a 1 year rental that they can not trade and a guy who is begging to go to dallas.

clippers hacked off chauncey billups last year and teams are apparently leery of doing the same with brand. check mark stein as he is very relaible.

dallas' main advantage imho is they are the one team who could be both competitive this year and also bid 5m. not sure teams playing youth have much reason to bring in brand.

Brand said he wishes Dallas claims him.

Scola also got amnestied and the Mavs are bidding on both. Jeebus,if we got Scola and Brand. Kaman,Brand at the 5. Dirk and Scola and Wright at the 4. Great front line.

They don't need both just one.

Dirk/Brand or Scola
Kaman/Wright

Ya we will only get one of the 2.

I'm happy with either, but I prefer Scola.

Scola has a nice inside the paint game, but Brand is a much better defender.
Kaman is an ok defender at best. Wright is a good defender except vs really big guys.

In any case, we can see that Cuban and Nelson were not sleeping at the wheel here.

these are some good moves the mavs are making, they sure have improved their team over last year. however, as it stands right now (no brand or scola move is done yet) they are still not at the same level as the top 3 teams in the west, and i still think the grizzlies and clippers are better at this point. if they can get brand and/or scola, they will be with that bunch in the second tier

Sounds about right. They need (and will) add more.

Mavs were in that "second tier" in 2011 too. You never know how a season unfolds. Especially a regular real season. Not an abbreviated one.

Brand is a decent on the ball defender, but he's not getting any younger and his knees are already shot. He's got little athleticism left and his jumping ability is almost nonexistent at times. I can't imagine why the Mavs would want to pick him up. Maybe for a year at a low salary and for backup minutes he could be effective. Certainly wouldn't trade Heywood for him though. Not to mention he's only 6'9 going up against the tall trees of the west if he lands there.

They'd be much higher than the 7th seed. With Brand they'd be as good as anybody in the West outside of OKC, the Lakers, and the Spurs.

yes, but we were talking about last year, and i was talking about them as they are right now, before any potential scola or brand move. i actually said the exact same thing early, if they get scola and/or brand they will compete with the clips and grizzle for home court in the first round

One year may be right.

Haywood had a bad contract, otherwise they would keep him.
I wish Brandon Wright was about 2 inches taller.:

Brand was one of the best defensive players last year. And he was playing at the 5.

He's a 4, where he played the majority of the time, played some 5 out of necessity because of injuries.. playing him at the 5 in the west would be a death wish.
