There was zero reason to extend Dak

None, nada, zilch.

You didn’t even use the cap savings this season to sign other players.

Extending his contract was one of the worst decisions I’ve ever see a front office make.
BLAME LANCE!! LOL

He would still get a massive contract extension. It’s one thing to think the cowboys shouldn’t have paid him but someone easily would have. NFL franchises are ran by competent people not fans who are fanatical and impulsive. Some franchise would have absolutely paid him a market setting deal close to or at what the cowboys did.
This is pure speculation and nothing more. If he played out the last year of his contract and played the way he has been all season and the team missed the playoffs there is absolutely no indication that he would’ve been made the highest paid player in NFL history.

And if some other team was dumb enough to actually give him such a contract better them than the Cowboys.

This is what happens when you have a terrible GM. Just imagine how bad we would be right now if it wasn't for McClay finding guys in the draft. This would be 2001-2005 all over again. Though in 2003 we went to the playoffs and lost the first game.....sounds familiar?

No, it’s not speculation, u have guys like Kirk cousins, Derek Carr and a long long list of quarterbacks and who teams always convince themselves into thinking in the right situation they can get the best out of them. You guys let your hate or dislike for a situation cloud you’re judgement.

Dak, finished 2nd in mvp last year- a team would have absolutely convinced themselves this year was the product of bad injuries, coaching and a lack of a run game making him one dimensional and they could make him flourish again- mistakenly or not

And even if he wasn’t made the highest made player in nfl history- he’d have still gotten a contract that set or tied the top of the market. It’s just simple business of the nfl- there are always quarterback hungry teams, dak is a name, he’s had high quality play for an extended period of his career (in the regular season) and he’s supposedly great in the locker room….he was getting a massive bag either way.

Getting traded does not change his contracts.
The Cowboys quarterback gets benefits that nobody else gets. Dak needs to play better. He has been here for 9 years. He knows the circus. Dak is the Cowboys on the field CEO. At the podium there is no one better.

You think he would’ve been made the highest paid player in NFL history? I respectfully disagree. He would’ve been paid but IMHO I feel it would’ve been for much less than what he received from this FO. Possibly the 35-40 million dollar range. JMHO.

I was against the extension and feel they made a big mistake not letting him finish his contract. Again just my very humble opinion.

No way in the 35-40 range. Maybe not highest in nfl history but would have gotten 50+ and imo highest or close highest in the league. I was fine moving on also but nonetheless here we are

I don’t know in dollars. For any team trying to reach a SB it’s $0. Any team giving over a 4-5th round pick for him is getting stuck.

Not one of the other 31 teams in the NFL is scared to play against Dak. They know who he is and isn’t.

That said, he is still a tier 2 NFL quarterback who will command a significant salary from some team that does not feel they have a tier 2 guy.

Contracts are contracts. If Dak signed a 4 year contract with Sleep Number you think it automatically gets voided if traded to Pittsburgh?

No it does not.

You think Pittsburgh QB's have no contracts.

Russell Wilson currently sucks and he still has contracts with:
  • Nike
  • Microsoft
  • Bose
  • Alaska Airlines
  • Mercedes-Benz
  • Panini Sports Cards
  • Spin Maste
  • Wheels Up
  • Wilson Sporting Goods

What are you ranting about. Dak wants to be the Cowboys quarterback. He is the most marketable quarterback in the league because he is the Cowboys quarterback. Russ has a better resume then Dak and is a company man similar to Dak but makes nowhere close to the endorsement dollars that the quarterback of Dallas Cowboys would make. Why do you think the Joneses are so arrogant when it comes to free agency. Dallas is like being in NY or LA without the state taxes but America’s team brings you international appeal that the Giants, Jets, Rams, and Chargers don’t bring. That is where the big money is now with the global economy.

...and so many of us called for just that. We begged for it... I really don't understand in what universe extending Dak was a good idea? I don't care for what money, the extension itself is the problem. Not the money.

Where are the "what's your alternative" people? What's yours now?
Exactly.

I want to know how going with Lance the whole year would have been a bad move. This is a 5, maybe 6 win team people. They did NOTHING of consequence to upgrade RB, so we knew GOING IN THAT IT WAS GOING TO BE A LOSING SEASON. SO WHY THEN ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH, NOW WELL PAST DAK'S 'WINDOW' THAT STARTED IN 2016, WOULD ANYONE EXTEND DAK??

Delay the pain that you inevitably have to go through?

Stupid organization, and so many of us knew it. Screw these guys, seriously. Not my 1970s-1990s Cowboys, for sure.

Again his contracts do not expire with a trade and going to a new market will automatically attract new endorsements.

The way QB salaries go right now I don't think it would make a difference. Not making excuses for Dak but it's clear he does not have the protection, running game, or receivers outside of Lamb that he needs to produce at a high level. Having said that I think he is pressing and taking too many unnecessary risks with the football.

As for the teams in need that would probably have gone after Dak, I would say the Raiders, Giants, Panthers, Browns, Dolphins, Patriots, Jets, Saints, Steelers, Seahawks, and Titans would all have varied levels of interest if he would have become available.
But out of all those teams, what team would be as dumb to sign him for 60 million??

Not completely true, Wilson and Dak make about the same in endorsement deals in 2024. Previous years when Wilson had a good reputation he beat Dak by a lot. Mahomes easily does double what these guys get in KC. If you win the endorsements will come, doesn’t matter where you are these days.

The Dak deal actually saves the Cowboys money. If Dallas let him play out his deal and walk he would have counted $25 million in dead money against the cap in 2025 (remember his 2021 deal included two "ghost" seasons that Dallas could push future money into).

Cap-wise the Cowboys are now in great shape for the next couple of years. The problem is they could have done the Dak and Lamb deals back in March and saved that money in 2024. That would have allowed them to build a more competitive team than this.

They are paying the price for sitting on their butts all offseason.
This is the lie we have all been led to believe. Dak's first contract we were told he wasn't asking for $40M. Jerry just didn't want to pay him when he was offering $35M. Well, SOB he got $40M. This time the rumor was he was asking for $60M and all of the Dak fans said no sign him early he doesn't want $60M. Well, SOB he got $60M. Face the truth, Dak is a greedy loser that has a smart agent that played Jerrah. He cares about the money and not winning. We should have signed Russell Wilson and pissed Dak off until he requested a trade. If he had been benched he would want out of here. Is this bad for team morale? Sure as hell is but when you know the truth delaying the inevitable only makes the pain worse. Dak proved repeatedly he wasn't willing to do the things to get the job done. He is always ill-prepared and lacks fundamentals in big games. He gets contracts off of stats. The only stats that matter are winning. Before his first big contract I was the biggest Dak apologist. We lost playoff games because we had no defense. We lost the last three because of Dak. The D quit the Green Bay game once they knew Dak went into the tank.

FINALLY, Dak is going to be held accountable for what he has wrought here when we tank this season. I hope he is utterly humiliated and derided the rest of the season. Our only hope is when we get a Belichek (I hate it already) that this weak team is beat into shape with strong lines and reliance on running and stopping the run. Dak can go back to being a manager and held accountable.

So you confirmed Jerry is an idiot and Jerry is the problem.

It is called leverage. Good GM's don't put themselves in bad situations.

My guess is at the conclusion of this year someone would have given him 25-30 million a year. After the season he is having I thinks that what he would garner. And he would be a stop gap for a team. He’s not going to get better and needs an excellent team around him.
