Where are you now on losing/retaining/promoting Dan Quinn?

Quinn was reported to be a strong candidate for the Denver HC last season. He finished second in that deal apparently. Denver will likely be looking again this off season. New owner out there looking for his guys. Quinn could be a Bronco candidate again.

There was going to be improvement in their play combined with new methods to game plan them.

The most effective one is to understand that the team now has 8 of the defensive starters in their rookie to 3rd year. Mistakes due lack of experience will happen. Over-persuit will happen.

The only cure is experience.

Dameco Ryans will be a head coach just like Quinn was promoted when he was with Seattle, However, if he were hired by let’s say the Texans how quickly do you think he’d turn things around? Ryans, like Saleh before him had premium talent to work with especially on the line. Nick Bosa on the outside, Erik Armstead in the interior and even had Deforest Buckner for a little bit. What separates us from 49ers is Armstead. Not Bosa , Not Warner, Not Polamalu Jr but Armstead. You give DQ Armstead and this run D would probably be better.
I agree. But Saleh is doing a hell of a job and making Jets relevant again. He’s having to pay for past sins of them drafting Zack Wilson and Darnold before him.

Russell Wilson's decline and contract make this the worst NFL HC job( if available ) in the last 2/3 years. So I'm not sure he'd want that one but I suppose candidates could get prior approval/OK to bench Wilson regardless of his contract.

Give Quinn back Brown, Lewis, Hankins, LVE and a healthy Tank, Barr and Micah and I suspect this defense returns to being one of the best in the league. At some point we have to acknowledge that the guys he's losing are good players. The more good players you lose the dumber the coaches tend to look. I know Quinn will be courted in the offseason regardless and whether he stays or goes will depend on the openings and the situations presented. If he does go I have a good feeling about Edwards and Witt filling the DC role.

Payton is proven as in a Super Bowl coach.
And who referenced Fatboy McCarthy? For the record he is way more talented than one-dimensional Quinn, whose D is struggling.
Blimey!
24th in defending the run?
34 points hung on the Cowboys by another struggling team?
A HC job for Quinn might be warranted, but only in Bizzaro World, lad.

In your misguided attempts at humor you seem to have missed that the Jags came into that game having won two of their previous three games.. both over playoff teams Baltimore and Tennessee. In doing so scoring 28 and 36 points respectively. They were a "struggling team" early on in the season.. but have now won 4 of 6 and are actually in the playoff hunt in the AFC. It's okay to go ahead and tip the cap to the other guys sometimes.

It’s pretty obvious the love affair many fans had with Dan Quinn is over. You would have thought Mike Nolan was back coaching the defense against Jacksonville. However, to be fair the injuries have played a big part in the decline of the defense.

Ya think!?!?

Sorry but there is no excuse for blowing that lead. It doesn't matter whether Jacksonville were on a roll or not. The defense totally collapsed without any obvious reason. I can only imagine that the Jaguars ourschemed us in the second half, who knows. But all in all that was embarrassing. Not saying this is on DC, I see where the OP is coming from. But in the end they lost it for us. You can't score on every drive.

Doesn't make a difference in the standings though, so f*** that game and on to the next.

It doesn’t matter. This team will continue to falter at the hands of any and everyone. We’re a poverty franchise that can’t be fixed. Keep his or lose him, we’ll be in the same 1st round exit loop until the end of time.
So you are cheering for Philly this weekend? I mean. You have a history of leaving and cheering for other teams. Imagine being 10-4 and talking like this about the team you are apparently a "Fan" of lol.

I don't get the furry thing but....
with temperatures dropping to the 'teens and lower this weekend,
I sure could use a good quality Chewbacca suit... lol

It's fun. Sidenote, I handle cold very well, but yes, in suit during the really really cold temps, it's a lifesaver.

TBD, I want to see how or if he fixes this mess.

My initial reaction is yes, we really want to retain him, but if this defense continues to flounder, I probably will become indifferent.

Oh I made no reference to excusing anything. I was simply responding to the assertion that they were some chumps whom the Cowboys should have curb stomped. They are an up and coming team that is finding themselves. Yes we should have held onto that lead. The defense collapsed for a very good reason. Their coaching staff figured out that they could attack Kelvin Joseph with impunity. That ability to locate and exploit a weak link is one of the biggest failings of Kellen Moore. Other teams figure out who can't cover and throw the ball at that person any time they need a play. Moore treats all receivers and corners and absolutely equal and just "throw the ball to whoever's open." That's why teams can show double or shaded coverage to Lamb and know the ball is never coming to him in crucial situations.

What are your thoughts on Dan Quinn in 2023?
Last I heard, it was rumored he was done with the HC dream
and wanted to by a DC, like Dick LeBeau was in Pittsburgh. (Remember Blitzburgh)

We need to get him a high quality NT to help him stop the run. That's a position that we've neglected for decades, and it's time Jerry takes it more seriously. NT allows you to clog the middle to make the outside rushers and run stoppers' jobs easier. Plus, when it's a pass, the QB can't step up. We need at least two in case one gets hurt as well. I'd say Hankins needs to stay, draft one around round 3, and then get a UDFA or two for the 3rd spot, or sign one in FA like Darron Payne.

I'm not even advocating for Quinn, nor am I even against Payton, I'm just confused by the logic for Payton. He's not a coach with a great history of fixing defenses. He had some solid ones toward the end of his tenure in NO, but also some of the worst in history too. I bring up McCarthy just because he has a very similar track record to Payton. If thats the logic to make a change, why even make a change?

McCarthy went thru that same DC issues as Peyton did, ..what made it worse was McCarthy refused to rid himself of his buddy Dom Capers
as GB went thru some dreadful defensive years post SB.
The feeling was upper management forced Mac to eventually make DC changes there …

- Irony that there’s the same feeling here with Cowboys upper management taking charge with forcing DC changes under Mac,
due to the worst defensive record in team history.

- With Sean Peyton, i did not like the way Peyton handled Saints once Brees eventually departed - he was the likely one that cheerlead
for Saints to re-sign gimmick QB Tayson Hill to a lucrative deal and when it looked like a disaster on hand, .. he tore it outta there as “retired”.
As if anyone is gonna believe he no longer wants to HC.

- Plus side if it’s Payton ?
Management would have to budge with Kellen Moore, as Peyton would handle the offense (his offense)
And Peyton has a long rep being an QB guru but his designs are conducive to involving and scheming the RBs in the pass game.(ala Kamara)..a huge Kellen misgiven.

He was one of the hottest names for the 2023 HCing cycle before the season started. Although we are ranked #5 defensively, we still have some serious issues. But I guess the question is/are his scheme vs lack of quality players in key positions. Has his star fizzled a bit over the last few weeks? Thoughts?

  • Do you still want him as MM replacement?
  • Are you OK with losing him for an HC job?

Still remains a quality dc, but I wonder about him as a hc. His defense blew big leads, like in that super bowl against the patriots. Actually believe MM has done a very good job, would like to see him become the play caller

  • Are you OK with losing him for an HC job? yes but prefer he stay on as DC and finish the job here..no need to blow up the team for 23.

Perfect right where he is. He is a down in the dirt, hands on coach. He does some things I disagree with like playing 2 LBs when our run defense stinks, but overall I think he is a big reason why we are having some success this year and I feel lucky that we have him. I don't think he would be as good as a HC but I don't want to lose him
