Well, I'd have to say that Gayle Sayers would fit into that catagory. He's a hall of fame RB, as it is, but he could have done soooooo much more. He was unbelievable in his time. He could be unbelievable if he played today.

The one guy I'd point out is Sterling Sharp. His career was cut way too short. I honestly felt like he was the best WR playing in the late 80s, early 90s. Better then Rice or Irvin IMO. If he would have lasted, who knows what kind of numbers he could have posted with Favre.

He's the best wr in the history of the game.....if you don't believe me just ask him. He'll tell you :D

I would say Danny White. He was so close to being in the elite company of SB QBs so many times.. I think he was a great qb, just never won the big one. if he had, he would be an all time great, esp for the Cowboys.

RBs...

Gale Sayers, that injury prevented perhaps one of the greatest careers of all time from happening. He was great, but pre knee injury he was simply out of anyone's league.

Lawrence Phillips, a lot of pure talent gone to waste.

Joe Delaney, drowned saving 2 kids. Was well on his way to being KC's best back.

Bo Jackson, IMO the most talented RB there ever was. He had the perfect combination of power and speed.

Terrell Davis, could have been a HOFer with a couple more years.

Billy Sims, oh my gosh could he run the football. Would have loved for him to have a longer career.

QBs...

Archie Manning, it sucks that he played for the Saints in that era. A travesty.

Roger Staubach, gave 5 years to the Navy. I wonder what he could have done with those 5 years.

Don Majkowski, Brett Favre rendered him null and void. The Majek man was pretty fun to watch in his own right.

Bert Jones, it seemed like he was always dangerous and always hurt.

WR...

Sterling Sharpe, terrible announcer, great WR.

Michael Irvin, he had another 5 years in him easy minus that neck injury.

Daryl Stingley, he was so good. Tragic.

OL...

Eric Williams, was never the same after that car wreck.

Tony Mandarich, I got nothing.

DE...

Dexter Manley, I literally feared that guy on games we played them. Drugs derailed a potential all time great.

DT...

Jerome Brown, one of the best I ever saw.

Steve Emtman, unreal how fast he disappeared.

LB..

Quentin Coryatt, he'll always have that hit (you know which one) at A & M as his signature.

DB...

Ken Swilling, had he come out after his Jr. year, top 5 pick. A college injury plummeted him own the draft and he never recovered.

Chuck Cecil, the guy could lay the lumber on anyone. Fiercest hitter who never had a big name for it...ever.

Darrell Russell.
First the drug problems and then his death
I agree - Russell was not nearly the same player after he died...

Here's a not as obvious one: Kurt Warner. I know he had great players around him, but that offense never really clicked as well when he wasn't playing. He was in the Arena League I think, then had that thumb injury, but for a few years there he was dominant.

Kurt Warner is still playing.

Now his current play might remind you of a corpse, but I can assure you he is still alive.

Duane Thomas.

Extremely talented RB. Now primarily a footnote to history.

Not one voted for the Big Cat? Leon Lett could have been a monster, I still have yet to see a DT that was that quick off the snap.

Hershel Walker is a great example of this. He spent a few years in the USFL and then was traded to a team that didn't use him properly. Imagine if he'd gone to the Cowboys right out of Georgia, and stayed there most of his career? He'd be in the HoF, I'm certain. Heck, as is he already makes the initial large list of players being considered.

I thought Lett was one of the most over-rated Cowboys to ever play.

Was he decent-- yeah.

But he wasn't ever that great.

Bob Lilly put up numbers because he was great... Lett didn't because he was just above average.

Bo is a very good friend of mine. He is an outstanding man. It is unfortunate what happened to him and his football career, that said he never liked playing football. Baseball was his passion. Now it is his business...
Bo Jackson would be my pick. I was lucky enought to play a round of golf with him about 4 years ago, and he was very down to earth. Hit the ball a ton! Class act all the way around.

Duane Thomas had as much potential as anyone we had back then. The two years he was the starter in 70, 71 he was as good a back as there was in the game. Speed, power, could block, everything.
Leon Lett showed flashes of being another Randy White Bob Lilly but could never quite put it all together consistently. The nose candy got him.
Hollywood- could have been LT before LT. He was that good. Nose candy again.
Eric Williams- same thing. You look at it- the Boys have lost a lot of great players to that damn junk. Or being a head case.
Joe Namath- do you guys know he was a great option QB his first season at Bama before his first Knee Injury?Mike Sherrard of the chicken legs- he had the whole package but brittle bones.

karnak

I've often wondered how good Art Schlichter could have been if not for the whole gambling thing.

Then there's Joe Don Looney, Todd Marinovich, Ricky Williams (went from can't miss to cannibis :D ), Carson Palmer (yeah, I think he's done), Richard Todd and Wesley Walker, Chuck Muncie. There are way too many couldabeens, has-beens and if-onlys by the side of the NFL road.
