Why in the heck would we spend a 4th on a player that won't even make the team?

I'm a Pac 10 homer. I saw him play vs. Arizona several times and I know how fast the 100 Meter guy for Arizona was and how badly Stanback dusted him.

I think he's that much faster in a straight line.

I have read that both have posted track times of 10.4 in the 100 meters. Some snippets even claim 10.3 to 10.4 for Thompson while I haven't seen any sub 10.4 times for Stanback.

That is track. Running with pads and a ball in hand is different. Much different. Stanback looks fast with a ball, but so does Tyson. I think it would be a much closer race than 5 yards, which is a big lead in a race. Stanback just looks like a better ball carrier than Thompson. Tyson does not look fluid or natural running the ball. Stanback seems more instinctive.

Also if you watch some of Stanback's film you'll see he both tries to avoid tacklers AND breaks tackles -- That's something TT doesn't do.

:signmast:

I like TT, but other than a sweep to the left I don't think he's got much to offer. Sort of hoping Jackie Battle wins the 3rd job.

Me too. Battle can also play full back in spot duty. I like his versatility.

Myself. I enjoyed watching Battle at the U of H and was glad when Dallas signed him as an UDFA. I think the guy is going to surprise some people. He has excellent speed for a guy of his size and is a very punishing rusher.

I'm thinking he is another potential goal line option like Barber. Perhaps as the FB.

At UH was he a goal line guy? I honestly don't know.

Yes he came in on many short yardage situations including goal line. He was used at times as the lone back as well as the FB in a 2 back set. U of H ran a very unorthodox type of offense is was like a mix bag of different styles.

various notes:

Stanback will not make the club in the tub.

Indications have been he'd be ready for full steam go for a couple of weeks now so who knows.

The team has a few weeks to decide.

It will certainly do so before the pre-season has run its course.

Cut downs will occur before then.

Tyson Thompson is every bit as fast as Stanback and is regarded as the Cowboys fastest player. Even faster then the speedy Terence Newman. Why? Because he outraces him when they run 40's in the off-season.

Alexander Wright was faster than either guy but he couldn't catch.

Can Stanback catch?

In the end Stanback is an intriguing prospect which is why he was drafted. But we've had lots of intriguing prospects amount to jack squat.

Thought that he can fill a bunch of roles are really based completely on faith as he hasn't been able to even practice at one position. He also has next to no special teams experience in the areas the Cowboys would ask him to fill.

Its all speculation at this point but the OP has a point, if made way too heavy-handedly.

Stanback's injury status is a bit of a mystery to me. The Cowboys seem to be a bit close mouthed on the subject. He's running and making cuts but can't pass a physical? Can someone explain how this works with this injury?

Various notes II

The team drafted Stanback knowing that he had an injury that might prevent him from being ready to go in training camp.

The criteria you put on Stanback for making the team is clearly not the criteria that the team will use in deciding whether to keep him. In fact, the team made that decision in April when they took him, knowing full well he might not contribute this year.

He's made the team. Deal with it.

A lot of people are running for cover on this one.

We needed depth at CB, NT, and WR.

All seemed to be missed in this draft.

Thats the reason it was rated so low [D to F] by so many.

Show me, with a link, any rating service that gave the Cowboys a D or an F.

Just one.

Were there any receivers available after the 1st round when Dallas had picks? They didn't need a 1st round WR. At least not one that was available where they picked. NT, either.

Here's one...

Hall of Fame scribe Rick "Goose" Gosselin, who has forgotten more about the draft than I'll ever know, wasn't nearly as impressed as I was with the Cowboys' work this weekend.

Goose gave them a D.

Here's Goose's take:

The Cowboys picked up an extra first-rounder in 2008, but that didn't help them in this draft. Marten and Free are blue-collar blockers and those were two of the better picks. Stanback is coming off a foot injury.

Odd.

Because I swore we drafted a WR in round 4 and two CBs in round 7.

They may not have been as high as you'd like them to be in the draft, nor the players you wanted....but we did draft depth at those positions.

And again, you fail to comprehend that you cannot address all needs in one offseason. We also had needs to develop a future LT, possibly RT depending on Colombo, a SOLB and other positions.

That's just about where most reasonable teams would draft players that would be competing for 4th WR and 4th CB positions too.

agenda boy - you sure do get drone-some at times. it's your way or it sucks.

and that sucks.

you also quoted resources who had stanback as a QB - filling that *need* for the draft.

just because you can find a 2nd idiot saying idiotic things doesn't lessen your own idiocy, just gives you company.

Stanback will not make the team unless he can show something. It's that simple.

4th rounder or not, unless he can get on the field, the coaching staff WILL cut him since they can't evaluate him.

I knew this one was coming.

One is "many" to you?
