Why is Carpenter playing inside?

Well someones going to be Unhappy...Either Ellis or Ayodele...And since Ellis is already unhappy anyways...:p:

Ellis = Eeyore.

Parcells thinks he can be as effective as McGinest, which is why he even thought of it. Ellis sells himself short and I even think his biggest supporters follow suit. He has surprised himself two years running. It sounds to me he really doesn't know his own talent as much as the head coach does.

Yeah McGinest is always the name thrown out there and for good reason...But Question and this is for anyone...who else has done this move and been very successful...Anyone?

Maybe because guys like Ellis and McGinist cry about the move so much that it rarely gets done .....

How many on here wanted to trade Ellis? Bill willed this threw and it may be an incredible move for Ellis.

4-3 DE to 3-4 OLB?

Or this late in career?

I don't recall McGinest crying like Ellis and that was part of the problem.

Here's one for everyone.

Why did we draft Carpenter as an OLB if, as Bill stated, "he looks like an inside guy?"

Taking it back a year, same deal with Burnett.

I'm all for depth -- and I thought Carpenter was a good pick. But this is two years straight that we tried to fill OLB and ended up with ILB. It seemed that Bill had that in mind for Burnett coming in. But how did it happen again with Carpenter? Our need inside is not as great as the need outside. So what happened here?

And I'm sure you also are aware that Ayodele played OLB at Jacksonville, and Bill signed him to play inside.

But, you also have to remember that Bill has never had the depth at Linebacker, and now has people who can fill the gap should someone get injured.

And while your question is a good question, you are also probably aware that training camp is designed to determine who the best players are, to go forward into the season with. Since Bill alreeady has his starting roster pretty much decided, he is now trying to use training camp to develop players to become more versatile, so that one player can fill another position and still keep the best 22 players on the field.

The above premise is borne out by the admission yesterday by Parcells that Hurd can play three different positions.

How can camp show what Carp can do at OLB if he isn't getting any snaps there?

I thought all along Bobby Carpenter was an inside guy, and I think he was widely slotted by other teams around the league.

I'm with InmanRoshi and Alexander in that I think Carpenter was primarily brought in to be one of the inside backers.

He has the bulk. He has very good quickness. He shows excellent savvy. He is capable of playing any of the linebacker positions.

I just keep thinking the loss to the Raiders last season and how Shanle got blown out of the middle as Lamont Jordan ran right up Dallas' butt.

That might have been the most dissappointing aspect to any loss. That showed that Dallas got their butts whipped. That HAD to change!

In my opinion, THAT is why Parcells went after Carpenter.

I don't think that was the primary reason. I am sure that was in the back of our minds that we had a player that could do both, but I think we had every intention of having him outside, but Ellis threw a curveball at us.

I think 4-3 teams slotted him as an outside guy, but I think he would be better as a 3-4 ILB. I never see him becoming a dominant pass rusher, which is what you want from a 3-4 OLB.

Either...But really 4-3 to 3-4 OLB.

Porter, Vrabel, McGinest, Akin, Ware, Colvin, Haggans, Lloyd, Greene, Foley.

Babin, Wimbley, Lawson.......

Ok sorry I meant switching after they were in the NFL...Like McGinest and Ellis are doing.

I'm sure this has been mentioned...

The reason Carpenter is inside is cuz Ellis is doing a good job at OLB.

Plain and simple.

I'm still not buying that Ellis is doing a good job inside until he actually plays against a team or two.

Still doesn't explain why Carpenter is running 3rd string at OLB

So he is going to run second string at two different spots?

Seems clear enough to me.

no -- but my point was that he's not really seeing any action at OLB - as I understand it, he's mostly been playing in the nickel package as an ILB - with all the rotating etc. you'd expect to see him at least get some snaps outside - and most reports have it that he isn't seeing much action out there.

the point was he's seeing pretty much zero action outside.

I'd think that if you want to prepare a guy to take snaps there that he'd have to at least practice at the position
