Why not a trade for a backup QB?

This may be what Jerra and co. may be planning, trading a lower level draft choice and/or maybe a player thrown in and get a Mike Glennon type backup
..does this not sound like a typical Jerra move ?

Glennon is exactly who i was thinking of and i believe the Bucs are willing to trade him.

Well, lad, FA QB with skills are in short supply. And, haven't we tried this before? Witness the two veteran backup QB who bit the dust, as you Yanks say, last year.
No, old fellow, if we pick a QB it has to be through the draft. One we can develop and groom behind Romo, whose time is just about up in the NFL.

Gimme. Yanks haven't used the phrase "bit the dust" in a long long time....:) just for the record.

one thing i have found to be pretty consistent is that when someone calls jerry jones "jerra" they have a pre-conceived notion of how he will act and the stupid things he will do - but he seldom does them yet the people who think "jerra" stupid will continue to lob out things like this as "typical jerra" even though it's not really...typical.

You mean Dexter Coakley and a 4th rounder won't get us Tom Brady?

For what it's worth, I don't see the reasoning behind drafting a backup. A backup is the guy you want to put in if your starter goes down. In the very specific case of Dallas, he is the guy that can win games for you if/when Tony is hurt again for stretch of games. If we are seriously trying to make a run while Tony is still playing and if you believe that the window for that is 2 years, lets say, then why would you draft a QB to backup? There isn't a QB coming out who can step right in and be a starter who can win you games. I am in favor of drafting a QB to develop but the idea of drafting a QB to be the backup we need to step in and win for us next year, that I don't get. I think you need a guy who is experienced for that or you just let everything ride on Tony staying healthy and don't complain if he goes down.

Blimey! How about "bought the farm" or "kicked the bucket"? And why would a dying personage buy a farm or kick a bucket? You Yanks confound me. A lot. More than the Weeknd or that new band The 1975.

I think "bought the farm" may still be in use in a measurable way.

"You Yanks confound me" -- I cant speak for all of us, but the fact that word "Yanks" is used to define us, confound me.....lol;

Ive been in the south, in various parts for many years now though.

The Buccaneers are not giving him away, supposedly looking for a team willing to start him and are starting the asking price at a 2nd round choice.

He is also in a contract year, so any draft choice they get for him they would likely try to push for this draft as opposed to 2017.

Would you put Glennon into the top 34 players in this draft? I wouldn't. Not by a long shot.

There arent 32 good starters...........so

The Rams are bluffing to start Keenum.

So, Dallas trying to trade for someone to assume the privilege to back up Romo for five years (still not a damn debate) should be no problem.

Where, indeed, are my manners! By using the word Yanks, I did not mean to imply that you southern people were Yankees. That word is a term of endearment to all you Americans who saved our British way of life twice in the last century. Perhaps I should use another word instead of Yanks. If I have offended anyone here, please, a round of Guinness and potato pot pie for everyone here. Let us all sing a raucous round of "It's a Long Way to Tipperary"!

I remain your obedient savant,

Rather draft an heir apparent than get fleeced in a trade for a quality backup who may or may not ever amount to anything more (e.g. Garrapolo).

Unfortunately, there's no certainty that any draft pick amounts to anything more either...whether they take Goff/Wentz in the 1st...Cook in the 2nd...or Prescott in the 3rd. It of course really is a crap shoot.

The upsides with Garoppolo are that he's still only 24 y/o...but has had the chance to be an understudy to one of the greatest QB's to ever play for 2 years. He's also looked pretty good in limited action. The downside is that if traded for now...he has 2 years remaining on his contract. Denver of course had a guy they developed for 4 years, that left for $18 million a year after 7 starts. I don't think #34 would be getting fleeced...but wouldn't offer more. Any trade for Garoppolo would have to take into consideration the duration of his current deal. He was pick #62, so pick #67 & say a 2017 5th might be an opening offer...with #34 being tops.

The Pats have pulled the trigger on trades for backup's before...with guys like Cassel & Mallet being dealt. Wasn't crazy about either of those guys, but do like Garoppolo. But again, they'd have to make a decision within 2 years vs. 4 or 5 with a rookie. Same with New England unless they were willing/able to sign him to an extension of some sort, as I don't envision them using any of the costly tags with Brady still under contract.

I like Glennon as well...and he has starting experience. But I'd prefer Garoppolo. And Glennon only has 1 year left on his rookie deal. It's been reported that a few teams have inquired about Glennon over the last couple of offseasons. Lovie Smith acknowledged it, but they didn't want to trade him.
