Teams don't trade quality backup QBs they're too valuable. We already traded for a backup QB last season and ended up with one that was no better than the backup we had. We wasted a 7th round pick on a QB we no longer have. The best approach would be to draft a QB no later than the second round and not only could we end up with a solid backup but we could end up with a quality starter to replace Romo when his time is up. The odds are rarely in your favor when drafting a QB to be a starter but if you take a QB no later than the second round chances are pretty good they could develop into a solid backup. It's much easier to hit on a solid backup QB than a solid starter if you use a premium pick.

Because it's so difficult to gage how a college QBs game will transition to the NFL you could end up with not only a solid backup but a very good starting QB one day. You never know! The Cowboys have to start thinking not only backup QB but starting QB down the road because Romo may only have 2-3 more good years. Our best chance at success with a backup QB would be in the draft because in a trade all we'll likely end up with is another Matt Cassel.

This may be what Jerra and co. may be planning, trading a lower level draft choice and/or maybe a player thrown in and get a Mike Glennon type backup
..does this not sound like a typical Jerra move ?

Backup QBs are worth their weight in gold. It is extremely rare for a team to trade it's backup, unless said backup unequivocally sucks. That tells me that Glennon is not going to be an upgrade over what we already have.

Another problem with trading for a QB is it gives the Cowboys an excuse not to draft one. Can't see them trading for a QB and drafting another one. With all the needs the team has they're not going to use a couple of draft picks on QBs. I like my chances of landing a solid backup QB and possibly a future starter with a premium draft pick than trading for a QB who's a proven scrub who's only future is carrying a clipboard.

Where, indeed, are my manners! By using the word Yanks, I did not mean to imply that you southern people were Yankees. That word is a term of endearment to all you Americans who saved our British way of life twice in the last century. Perhaps I should use another word instead of Yanks. If I have offended anyone here, please, a round of Guinness and potato pot pie for everyone here. Let us all sing a raucous round of "It's a Long Way to Tipperary"!

I remain your obedient savant,
Gimme

ohhh. sorry about that. I don't think anyone gets offended by the word, "Yanks". But I am from the north. (US that is, is there really anywhere else? ). And many southerners still call people from the North, "Yanks".......... Northerners don't call people from the South ...... "Rebs".............ever. Not anymore at least.

Its been a long, long time since the Civil War......So it has always seemed odd to me, that there is still many, many southerners(US that is) that call Northerners, "Yanks"....99 percent are just messin.....:)

The phrase, "The Yankees are coming, the Yankees are coming" was popularized in movies/stories; during the civil war, it meant "trouble"..........

The phrase, "The Yankees are coming, the Yankees are coming" , could be used today I think. But instead of the Yankees coming to burn the town down. Were coming for Jobs, and the Weather......:)

I did not know Gimmie was from Overseas. I just figured he was a local Texan foolin around...

and you forced me to google, "Tipperary"..... I did my family tree/ancestry thing years ago. I think I may have roots pretty close.

We got Morris. Solid pickup. maybe get a RB in (4th) round? I think maybe we bring some other solid guys in at RB and take a shot at QB with #4. I go back and forth on this one. Its a tough decision for sure. I wont be upset either way on this one....... And I don't know enough about the guys coming out of the draft.......

I just want a solid , "maybe" future superstar QB of the Dallas Cowboys, on the roster next year. Very few backups in this league fit that bill. I know, if Romo goes down, were probably going to lose with the Rookie. But it wont be "wasted time" when he is playing.....like it was with Weeden, Cassell.....

Blimey! So much knowledge! My never-do-well cousin, the other gimme, is pan-fried southern. I hail from the moors near Wales and we Brits call you Yanks.
C'mon, It's a Long Way to Tipperary was in the top 1,000 when I was a youth. A real beer hall song. A manly man's song!
But, when the old gimme comes back you will not like him. Trust me. I am blood related and I don't like him!
We want to shake him off the family tree but he has long toes to which to adhere to the branches!

Well, Yanks it shall remain, so no one take offense or be proud of it.
:)

Not Always. Sometimes the Backup pushes for a starting position and if you don't have a Franchise QB or some teams may be in a situation where you have a young Franchise QB and you don't want that distraction with the fan base, you may trade a quality backup. We did that with Aikman after he solidified his position as the future. Of course, there are also situations where the cap may just not allow for it. Those things do happen but in general, I agree with you. Quality backups are too hard to find. You usually don't see a lot of those in FA.
