Why would Ware take a pay cut?

I don't know if team loyalty will win out here. A player has only a certain amount of time to maximize his earning potential.
If Ware is going to take a big pay cut, I don't see why he'd stay when someone team will jump at signing him and giving him a huge bonus. My prediction is if the team tells him to take a salary cut for the team, he bolts to "greener" pastures.

My prediction is that he'll possibly realize his health isn't what it once was and other teams may hesitate to give him as much as his agent would like to imagine. He'll probably be offered about 7 mil to stay . . . that's not anything to sneeze at. We'll see.

But doesn't Danny Boy like signing used up players? Weren't the Skins owned by Snyder when they signed Bruce Smith and Deion Sanders and both were a shell of their former selves?

I agree but that's why it's important that we don't low ball him and just expect him to sign. I agree with what you are saying. I am just not convinced that 6 or 7 million is the best offer he might see. It might be but we can't feel as if it's a sure thing. He just needs to do the best for himself and his family and the team needs to do the best thing for the team.

Yup, thats why i think Dallas should extend him to a new deal like Suggs in the range of 3 yrs 28 mil. Give him the option to earn 28 mil more in his career and give him that security players want.

That would probably be more in line with what I think he might get offered but who really knows? I guess we'll see.

Question: Why would he resign for less

Answer: Because he has zero guaranteed dollars left to him. If he is cut, we will be signed for less than he is getting paid now. We can resign him at a slight premium and it is a win/win for both. He gets more guaranteed money, we get significant cap savings. As he will save us money if he is cutt (alot of it), he has no leverage.

Because it gives him the chance to earn more in the long run and keep his career in one place. He's a family guy, he loves to work in the community. His life is in Dallas. To some players that means more.

Answer:

Because every big name DE signed the last ~12 months has been signed for <7M (or so). Most of them were in the $5M/range. None of them were $12M+/year, like Ware is scheduled to make.

So, unless something changes dramatically, he is significantly overpaid as compared to his contemporaries. Thus, logically, if he is cut he will sign a market level deal.

You said "We", as in the Cowboys. If that is what you meant, then there is no guarantee that "We" will resign him. It could easily be another team who offers him more.

I see what the issue is. I meant:

HE will be signed for less than he is getting paid now

I would guess that he will be paid less as well but I would not be so sure that it will be 7 million or less. It might be but there is no guarantee it will be.

You mean like Romo? a 34 year old QB with a bad back, who has never won anything.

no because QBs get paid. look around the league. Romo still put up the stats and has been healthy.

No wat to compare a QB to Ware. Top 10 QBs get paid alot more than DEs in today NFL.

you have to look at players at positions available. So lets look at QBs on the market compared to DEs. You never see a good QB hit the market. Last year younger DEs with better stats got less money than Ware. This ear the market will look to pay a younger Bennett and Johnson more than a injured over 30 Ware. Put Romo on the market today and he will still get big money. He;s a top 10 QB in the NFL. Cutler, Stafford, and Ryan has done the same as Romo and all get paid the same. Thats the going market for top 12 QBs. The market isn't as high as Ware current deal for over 30 DEs right now.

We can cut ware and take the savings and sign a starting DT and younger DE.

"What's right" is for Ware to provide for his family as best as he can in the short time he has left in the NFL before the injuries take too great a toll. Whether it's on this team or another remains to be seen.

I like that -- provide for his family.

But that's not measured just in dollars and cents. They probably have a large circle of friends and a tremendous zone of comfort for the kids.
When you've already made over 40mil, the intangibles are priceless. By staying, he'll probably have the opportunity after retirement to garner income through endorsements and business contacts as well.

What price do you place on comfort and peace? He should already have security, with even more to come if he stays here.

To answer the OPs question: Ware is taking a pay cut no matter where he plays. The question should be: Why would Ware take a pay cut to stay in Dallas? Ware isn't going to make 13 million this year regardless of where he signs. He's taking a pay cut. No two ways about it.

It's not even a pay cut. He has NEVER made 12.75m a year. It's just a made up number from 5 years ago.

Sick of Ware. If he wants out then good riddance. Everyone knows this team needs some more cap room, but this guy is not willing to take a pay cut to stay on this team, so get rid of him already. Suggs plays the same position, same age I think, still playing better than Ware to be honest, Ravens needed him to take a paycut and he did. Now he's gonna retire a Raven. With Ware it's show me the money or I'm gone. Yuck.

Has the team even started discussion with Ware and asked him to take a pay cut? I was under the impression that this has not yet been done. How can we know for sure what Ware will or will not agree to if those discussions have not even started?

He said he's not gonna take a pay cut, that's enough for me. He already ruled that out. But of course he's willing to restructure his deal, what a noble man. He's willing to cash in millions right now (bonuses) rather than wait for to be paid out during/after the season (salary). Gee, thanks!
