If you are in great shape then football shape is not a big step. You do know he did the same thing in 2011? waited until after camp, signed on Sept 4 and was playing at a PRO BOWL LEVEL one week later. So he has been there and done that. People that bothered to do a little research on this guy realize that.
There are tons of former players that keep in great shape but lost the step needed to compete in the NFL.
I am very happy and excited about this signing. I think this really does wonders for the O-Line, and I expect Free to play really well this season for two reason, Waters should be right next to him, and he is coming up on a contract year.
I believe the Cowboys have the option to extend Free's re-negotiated deal for another year.

Guys can be in great shape and still not be in football shape.
Thank you. Some people don't understand what football shape even is. They are too busy telling other people that they don't know what they are talking about. Waters is going to be a "wait and see" player at this point in his career. I'm happy we got him for depth at a minimum and hope for a lot more but we have to wait and see what we have.
The realists (myself included) were the one's shouting to sign Waters a long time ago, some (I forget which poster) were calling for this 2 years ago. The people that said that our oline was "fine" are the one's that you'll probably hear the negativity from.

I hope not. Just like Spencer, there is a reason they are going to play well. Let them play well for that new contract, then let them walk. It seems they lose motivation with that new deal.
And some people don't understand that football shape for a guard is radically different than for a skill player.

If Free plays to an acceptable level that $3.5 mil option will be a deal.
As it is you don't want to have to replace Free, Waters, Ratliff and Spencer all at the same time. That's putting way too much pressure on your draft.
