Well let's let this guy get on field and we'll see if he's ready then. I fail to see the downside in this deal. It's not like we locked him in for 5 years. Even if he isn't pro-bowl level, as long as he's better than what we have right now, that's something positive to take away.

Some folks see the downside in every Cowboy deal. Not sure why. Waters should be a huge upgrade over Free at G or Bearnadeau and at a reasonable price.

There's going to be an upgrade... the question is how much?

We'll find out.

And some people don't understand that football shape for a guard is radically different than for a skill player.

It would be neat if you could share your understanding of this radical difference with us.

Be lucky to get a conditional 7th for either one I think. There are lots of Arkins and Costas out there.

We'd be unlikely to get anything for Arkin, I would think. Costa, though, would net a pick if we wanted to dangle one. I'd rather keep the depth right now, though.

Belicheat owes ALL his success to Waters. And he willingly let Waters go so he could rest for a year and then return him to the Super Bowl glory years.

But let us give Waters a chance to see what he can do.

There are tons of former players that keep in great shape but lost the step needed to compete in the NFL.

For most of them, though, they were in decline before they left the game. Waters went out still playing at a high level. He had not lost a step.

Has he in the year since he decided to head home? That's the question, but there's no real evidence from the last time he played to say it's happened.

Quite honestly at this point it is a mystery if he can still play at a decently high level or not. Being off 18 months and pretty much retiring in your head could make some one really slack off and get out of shape. I seriously doubt he is in good shape and we are just bringing him in for depth and it will take him some time to get into playing shape.

I don't know if he really retired in his head. Last year, he couldn't play because the Patriots owned his rights. It was either stay in New England or come home to Texas and sit out the year, and he wanted to come home and be with his family for personal reasons.

As Garrett said today, Dallas has been in contact with Waters since the start of camp, which Waters clearly did not want to intend. That's not the behavior of a man who's retired in his head. He wanted to stay in Texas and play football, so he kept himself in good physical condition and he got his wish.

One of the things I wonder is how closely Waters watched the team in the preseason, if at all.

Since he and Dallas have been negotiating since the beginning of camp, and I'm fairly sure Waters knew he'd eventually agree to a deal once camp ended, I wonder if he "studied" his role and his teammates to get a jump on things.

I am excited for the following reasons:

  1. In 12 NFL seasons, Waters has allowed 18 sacks and committed 18 false starts, according to Stats Inc. Waters was the best pass-blocking guard in 2011, according to Pro Football Focus. (stole these stats from BTB :D). Wow.
  2. DM29 should start looking like he did at OU - where he broke a lot of Adrian Peterson's records.
  3. Romo should have an extra second or two to find open weapons down the field. Let's be honest here. Who should be able to lock down Dez one on one - with a finally healthy Austin, and an always dependable Witten when they're clicking? Romo will get serious MVP consideration this year.
  4. Because we will have an improved running game, we should dominate time of possession. Our defense started out like gangbusters last year only fizzle out due to injuries and being on the field too much. If we dominate time of possession, look out.
  5. TFred has already played well. Wait till he is playing next to Waters - and learn from him.
  6. Free should benefit from playing next to Waters as well.
  7. Ditto for Leary. Man, I'm salivating at the thoughts of the potential of our interior line.
  8. Running game in December. This one is huge. Romo won't have to feel like he has to do it all. He can handoff the ball to DM29, etc., and simply manage the game.
  9. No Livings. No Bern. No Free at Guard.
  10. OL is now considered a strength. To quote Steven Jones (BTB):
"Getting Waters takes us from being a big, big question mark on the front end to having good depth," Jones said. "You take a starter last year in Bernadeau and he may ultimately be a backup. You know what we think of Costa and Parnell; it gives you a solid eight there. We are pleased."

I can't wait to hear haters like Screaming A Smith try to downplay what the 'boys have done. ;)

I'm excited because off the couch he's better than Leary, Livings, Arkin, Berny, etc.

I'm not excited because we're 2-3 years late on the deal, when he hit the open market a few years back we opted to go with Derrick Dockery to save a few pennies, while Waters went on to the pro bowl in New England.

Which is why, we're the Cowboys and they're the Patriots. Football games are won in the offseason and in the front office, not between the white lines.

They chose not to sign Waters a 2-3 years ago -- they had to give Rat, Free, and Scandrick extensions instead..... :p

I don't know if anyone on this site has complained and been more negative about the OL than I have. This move has shut me up and made me feel 10000% better than I did only a week ago. Do I wish we could have signed more guys in the trenches earlier? Yes. But better late than never, and if this works out like I think it will, Watch out NFL, here come the Dallas Cowboys!!!!

The difference in physicality between this year's interior line and last year's middle should be as glaring a difference as there is in any unit in the NFL this year. There's youth (Fredrick and Leary) and rust (Waters) so everything won't be roses and daffodils out there, but constantly having no pocket and no push from the interior should go the way of the dinosaur this season. Tony's going to feel like he woke up in someone else's bed. This should be fun to watch.

Everything can't always be rainbows and butterflies, it is compromise that moves us along.

Nope. You're thinking wrong.

If a worm had a machine gun the birds wouldn't try to eat him. I'm sure a month ago Jerry Jones said to himself....I could sign Waters now, but that is what the other teams would be expecting...... besides, I love to piss off those negative Cowboyszoners, so I will wait until the last minute, just to piss them off.
