I'm a bit surprised that one of the main tidbits of news in that article isn't being discussed more.

Roy missed 2 days of teaching sessions, as the priority was something else. Hence a sitdown was called with him (the Ellis comments were also a factor). Now on the one hand we have a person saying they aren't comfortable in the defense, and on the other we have someone skipping 2 days of teaching sessions. Oh boy!
Exactly. You complain that you don't know the defense, and then you don't even show up for a teaching camp?

Inexcusable.

You can tell from his comments that Roy so doesn't get it.

What's it going to be then, eh?

He never actually stated that in so many words, just that he felt the defense didn't fit him well and that there were communication issues.

Congratulations, you just provided another "myth" to be squashed.

Someone will be posting a stat with meetings attended any second.

Okay, change "don't know" to "aren't comfortable in"...

Plenty of people have suggested that Roy didn't study his playbook enough. Here's another example of that.

What are you getting at? What evidence is there that the attitude of the player appears to be changed and he appears to have leveled off a little as a player?

Do you have evidence on the contrary?

This is interesting in itself. If Romo didn't show for 2 meetings, or if Ware didn't show for 2 meetings, I think this would be pretty big news (of course, if it got out). But expectations for Roy certainly seem to have fallen.

I think that is a confirmation sign that the football side of things isn't as high a priority as the other things. This is Roy's choice of course, and his right. His employer and Football fans might not like it, but charitable work is at least a good thing to do.

Now as a guy worried about his play on the field, and subconscious or even conscious attitude, this adds fuel to the fire that this isn't the same player of years ago.

What do voluntary mean? kidding, kidding..

I think the meeting was called in response to the comments made by Roy's interview with Irvin, Ellis on Sirius, AND him not being at the OTA's. Everyone knows how important his Safety Net foundation is to him, so I think him missing two days wouldn't be nearly as big a deal if all those things hadn't come to pass.

On the flip side, I'm glad that it did spark the meeting. Excuse my pollyanna outlook, but I really hope now the communication barriers between him and the coaches have been broken, they can get back to business of him balling out of control.

I have the same view as you WG. From Ellis' comments, it seemed as if Roy wasn't comfortable with the new coaching staff so communication was limited.

Now that the communication lines seem to be wide open with a long 1 on 1 meeting with Roy and defensive staff, I'm hoping that we may see a different Roy this season. It may not be the Roy of old but hopefully we will see a more enthusiastic and intense Roy on the playing field IF he feels more comfortable with the scheme and staff.

So as not to create another Roy thread

One more thing on Roy

Before I head off to a few Mother's Day events, 1. Wash some clothes. 2. Take care of the kids. 3. Cook dinner. 4. Play PlayStation 3. Well, that's for me, let's address Roy Williams.

Williams was very busy on Saturday.

Williams' foundation, Roy Williams Safety Net Foundation, treated selected single mothers to a spa day at Hiatus Spa + Retreat, a four-course lunch at Cuba Libre Café and the chance to get a pair of shoes from Gregory's.

"It means so much," said 28-year old Demetrice Sanders, a mother of four from Mesquite. "We had no idea what they had planned for us."

Williams loves people. After a discussion with SportsDay, he posed for picture with some fans.

Now, to football.

A lot of you are probably trippin' on Williams' comments about the fans. What Williams said is no different from how a lot of players feel.

Most players feel like if the fans are not with them, forget them. If fans are for them, then yeah, let's go.

Here's some more Roy Williams stuff to chew on for a few days.

He will miss next week's OTAs because of a family vacation. It was excused by coach Wade Phillips, so don't trip out when you don't read about him next week. By the way, the OTA is not mandatory.

Oh yeah, he's Williams' on his favorite football subject, covering wide receivers: "It's a guessing game you never know. It's hard to cover 1-on-1. Yeah, sometimes you try to jump a route and you jump the wrong thing and you go ooh I hope they don't throw the ball this way. It' not like I'm scared to cover I do what I have to do. I mean, yeah if you're getting beat you hope yeah I hope he doesn't throw the ball my way. The whole thing is people want to point out one play and don't want to talk about when you lock a person down, its hard to please people."

That's enough from Roy Williams. I'm on vacation for a few weeks, take care of Albert and Tim for me.

well in that paragraph I see roy admitting to making mistakes in coverage. If he would only do more of that when he does make mistakes none of his problems would be problems. I think for some that is all they are asking for.

When I think about some of this fan stuff I dont get it. These guys are overwhelmingly supported. Now Julius jones had every single right to complain about the fans and the way he was treated. It was ridiculous how he was treated at home by the fans, getting booed during pregame is pretty stupid and low rent. I wanted to choke some people around me when they did that.

That doesnt happen to roy though, so well whatever.

When I think of roy I think of Rodney harrisson. They are virtually the same guy, big and strong and intimidating. They have a reputation for playing dirty and they both play dirty. They both are at a disadvantage covering athletic tight ends and wr.

The difference has become Harrisson will man up and admit he is outmatched and will admit he made mistakes and needs to get better, roy has not and seemingly will not. Also Harrisson has gained fire as his career has gone on, not lost it and that is the reason he has never been crucified in new england. The fans of the pats see the fire that harrisson plays with each week and then never lose respect for him, they know his shortcomings but they also know he is going all out. For instance the week leading up to the 04 super bowl against the eagles when freddie mitchell called out rodney, Rodneys response was "He must be crazy, I need something to calm down before each game because I am so excited to hit people, not fire me up"

And in that quote lies the difference with Rodney and Roy, who are essentially the same players in the same defense. Rodney even cheats and uses steroids but is still loved. Roy is the model citizen and a role model to young players off the field but he is getting grief because he is sensitive and stubborn and his attitude has changed.

Don't worry. If Roy lays a couple big hits in the first two weeks of the season, people will be screaming "zOMG Roy is back!!!!111" even if his overall level of play drops significantly.

Come on now, WG... Even at his best, Roy is no Matt Moore.

I dont give a rats butt about Roy the player.....I honestly dont. I just want the best 53 players we can field. If Roy is one of them cool, if not so be it.

Roy the person, seems to have turned his life around and is more involved in his community. He seems to want to give to those around him and be a positive member of society. This is the part of Roy I do care about. He is using is fame and money to make positive strides in the DFW area. He has also found God. He is doing his best to live a Christian lifestyle...and to bring peace of mind, heart, and spirit to himself.

As a Cowboys fan, I love the SBs and I love the winning....but more than that, I just love watching good competitive football. I want to see them trying the best and playing hard every play. If they win, awesome. If they lose, so be it.

More importantly though, I want to cheer for players who are solid members of the community off the field. I want to root for players who are doing good things to help others. As a Spurs fan, we have been spoiled to have such upstanding players on and off the court. It is amazing all the wonderful things they do for the city of San Antonio. I want the same for the Cowboys players. I want them to be able to do wonderful things in the DFW area....or any area where they feel assistance is needed.

I have never been the type to root for thugs and wins over character, dignity, class and losses. Ideally, I would take character, dignity, class and wins.....with the Spurs I have that.....I am hoping that soon, the Cowboys will bring it all to fruition as well.

Back to Roy. Maybe the # change will do him good. Maybe Dave Campo will do him good. Maybe doing the pool work will do him good. I have a feeling we will see a more focused and hungrier Roy come 2008. I have a feeling he will actually earn his next trip to the Pro Bowl.
