I continue to read posts where Jerry is considered the best owner in sports.

How can you reconcile the fact he continues to have the same GM for the entire time he has owned the club and in seventeen years that club has won one play-off game?

How can the owner be the best if he sticks with the GM who is failing every year?

People are holding onto that. I would have said it myself maybe 10 years ago.

Facts are a good owner, let alone the "best owner", would not put himself before winning. Like many have said a good owner would not hold onto a poor GM. That statement no longer applies. He is a bad owner when it comes down to the most important aspect of football: winning.

The Dallas Cowboys were America's Team long before Jerry got here. A monkey who has suffered head trauma could make money with this team. But even that "handicapable" primate would have replaced the GM by now.

One guy changes everything - 3different head coaches and 3 different GMs in the last 400 days

And the other guy wouldnt even change his underwear if he pooped in it

i'd kick in to pay for a "bash jones" section where all that could go.

If any monkey can make money with this team, why were the cowboys previous owners losing money every yr before selling to Jerry?

the NFL is a different animal now, a lot of that in part to Jerry. The revenue sharing, the TV contracts, the overall popularity. No NFL owner is going broke now.

So now its the revenue sharing. Revenue sharing doesnt go into the owners pocket. Thats to run the team.

By the way DET lost 3.2 mil in 2012.

Jerry Jones is the owner of a business. Going by that criteria alone there is no argument that he is the best owner in football...his team is the most valuable after all no matter how much the team has declined over the years.

An owner is judged by the success of the business he owns. We look at the Cowboys as a football team first then a business while Jerry Jones obviously looks at the franchise in a different way.

I don't like the man but I give credit when it's due and Jerry Jones deserves credit for turning the Cowboys into a money making juggernaut.

Except the success of the business he owns is judged by the success of the team on the field. That is the point of the business. The money he gets is assured by the contracts and success of the NFL as a whole. His end of the TV contracts makes him a millionaire many times over each year. The mere fact he parlays his team into a mega money machine by smart media manipulation does not mean his team, is successful, which is the point of the business to begin with.

Umm...they weren't? NFL franchises have been licenses to print money since the 70's

Ive never heard Jerry be accused of not making changes. I suppose when every armchair fan general manager wants a kneejerk reaction.

Yes. I'm jumping to conclusions thinking we might need a change of GMs after nearly two decades of failure.

What can I say. I'm one of those instant evaluators that litter this board. Thank God we've got you around to set us straight.

Grass is not always greener. Ralph Wilson of the Bills up here, pockets every last dollar from parking to concessions. Then he wants the city to pay for everything else. And they either let every good player walk or just plane suck forever.

They let Jason Peters walk.
They let Marshawn Lynch walk.
They let SanFrans safety walk (his name escapes me and I'm to lazy to look it up)

His family lives out of town and have made it known they are waiting for him to pass so they can sell sell sell.

How would you like to wake up to that reality every day?

There isn't an owner in the league that I wouldn't prefer over the one we have now. Not. A. Single .One.

You mean that one owner in Bum Bright? Easy, because he was cheap and did not care. He made his money in the oil boom and when it started dwindling, he had zero interesting in growing anything. The Cowboys were an investment.

I will not begrudge Jones his role in enhancing the brand. In fact, the way he can keep it marketable despite a mediocre on field product for nearly the last twenty years is pretty remarkable.

But the Cowboys were a name brand when he bought them and he simply tapped into an existing market that had dried up practically from the minute Bright bought the team in 1994.

That's like asking whether you'd rather be hung or shot.

Sort of, but it's actually more like death by 1000 cuts. Presumably the worst hanging would kill you in hours; perhaps the same with being shot depending on location, sepsis / infection, etc. What some of these fans are enduring has lasted a lifetime.

You are only partially correct. Jerry may be a great salesman and marketer, but he is a terrible owner of a football team. And that is because he won't put the structure in place to succeed on the field, ie a GM.

I don't care if the Cowboys are the most valuable franchise or not. I don't care if the Cowboys are worth 1 dollar or $10 billion dollars. I want a winning football team on the field. A team that competes every year for a championship, just like we used to.

Jerry can't do that. He doesn't know how. All he knows is how to generate income for himself. And I couldn't care less about that.

So if Jerry wants my kudos, hire a real GM, stay away from the football of things, do your marketing and watch the games from your private box on Sundays.

It's kinda embarrassing that people mention this like they have a financial stake in the Cowboys.

The bottom line is what determines him being a "good" or "bad" owner..

He's not an idiot, he is a multimillionaire in his own right. You try running a multimillion dollar business.

You're right, fans don't care about his bottom line, that is why this thread exists..

Again, he's not a good GM. He needs to hire a real GM (I stated that in the post you just quoted). You can blame the owner for not hiring the GM. However, overall, he's a very successful owner. Hiring a GM is only one of his MANY responsibilities.

Other than hiring a competent gm, who cares what his other responsibilities are.
