Would you consider a Zack Martin for Chris Jones trade?

This trade makes no sense on any level in my opinion.
Mainly for the chiefs. Although it would be a downgrade on the OL. OGs are just not that important and plenty of top teams are weak at that position. WCO will help in covering up that deficiency. Jones had 15.5 sacks last year and it was the second time in his career to do that.

I’d let Martin sit all season if he’s willing to lose out on all that money. He’s on the wrong side of 30 and is not going to risk losing millions of dollars by sitting out the season.

This offense seems to collapse if a single important player is out. Look at what happened when a freaking RB was suspended.
That suspension was 6 years ago, Not the same team or coaches.

Nevertheless, while I would love the Cowboys to have Chris Jones, we have sunk resources into the DT position the last couple of years, and the defense is likely to be very strong even without Jones. On the other hand, we don't have great depth at OG, and there are more questions on the offense as a whole.

Martin is probably the more important player for the team

First, to be clear, from my perspective, it would be a trade WITHOUT either player getting new money. They would change teams under their current contract and work with their new team for an extension ( each team could get one year and let the player the walk) I know it's probably not doable but interestingly, there are a lot of parallels between both players
  • both are currently holding out
  • both players' teams are refusing to meet their demands
  • both players are at the backend of their careers but still playing at a high level
  • both players are All-Pros
  • both players would have an immediate impact
  • both players could play one year with the new team and walk or get their extension

The unanswered question is if neither player would play this year under their current contract, why would being traded to another team make them more willing to play a year under their current contract?

I would probably be more interested in retaining Martin, although Jones would complete this defense. Losing Martin could affect the entire offense as a whole, Jones improves a unit that is already good.

It makes the Chiefs worse by trading away their best defensive player.

It makes the Cowboys worse by trading away their best offensive lineman.

It does nothing to satisfy either player involved.

And it makes neither team better overall.

I would want to make this trade but there are problems to overcome, not the least of which is the Chiefs would never do it.

The Cowboys are already thin on the OL and using a weak OG against the NFC East DTs would scare the heck out of me. Making this trade upgrades the DL a little but kills the OL.

If the Cowboys had a viable backup for Martin this trade would make more sense for Dallas, but the Chiefs wouldn't do it.

OP...No!

Not the point to redevelop the team at it's core. Try to win, first.

You overrate Jerry's leverage because at the end of the day, Martin probably has banked more than enough to live and Jerry is known to panic after he overplays his hand.
Jerry is playing this like Zack is hurt and may miss the year. He most likely will trade a DL for an OG close to the beginning of the season. The Cowboys will play against the Giants in the first game come win, lose or draw.

No need to worry. Jerry is not signing any big deals before he tackles Dak, CeeDee, and Parsons to extensions. That's just a fact.

As much as I love Chris Jones and would love to have him, I would not do the deal. First question, who would take Martin’s place? And that right there should have your brain saying, “the next guy up is a complete drop off and would be a serious problem”.

Bottom line.
One Guy on this team DESERVES his money. And it's Zack Martin.

And before the "it sets a precedent" replies, It only sets a precedent for ten time ALL pros and Hall of fame players. Not schmuck pro bowlers that think they are at Zack's level.

no. As much as I am steadfast in not giving him a new deal, I am no fool. He is our best guard. We already have a nice DT room. I'd extend him after the year, maybe midyear.

while guard is a fairly easy spot to plug a guy in, I don't wanna do that full time. Maybe for a few games.

We’d still have the issue of jones wanting more money and Jerry saying we gotta pay all these other players. It won’t happen and it’s not something I would do. Jerry just needs to quit playing and work something out already

15.5 sks 3T would definitely make the Cowboys better. OG is one of the least important positions. WCO is the perfect scheme to skimp on OG as well.
