Here is an alphabetical list of our WR's currently on the rooster:

T Austin N Brown R Cobb A Cooper R Davis M Gallup
J Guyton A Hurns J Johnson L Lenoir D Smith C Wilson

I personally think this group has a chance to be really good. We seem to have all the WR "types" to have a dynamic offense. Speed, quickness, hands, size and route running. But there are some questions as to who makes the cut and who doesn't. I have my list but I'd love to hear what ya'll think.

How many do we keep?
Who makes the 53?
Who makes the 46?
Who makes the PS?
Who are your starting 5?
The crazy thing is we will likely lose a WR that I like. Good problem to have.

We keep 7.

STARTERS. Cooper. Gallup. Cobb.
BACKUPS. Brown. Wilson.
PRACTICE. Johnson. Guyton.

How the heck is Pollard going to get reps with Austin around? Hurns pay and play dont add up.

I think it's hard to separate the WRs, TEs, and RBs, if they really are going to use Pollard and Olawale like they've indicated.

RB: Zeke, Pollard, Olawale
WR: Cooper, Gallup, Cobb, Hurns, Brown, Johnson/Davis

Pollard makes Austin expendable in the backfield, and Johnson/Davis both bring the same speed.

I wouldn't say that Austin "didn't do squat", I'd say that like many other players, the boring, unimaginative Scott Linehan failed to use him. Austin produced very good numbers with the limited chances he did get.

What you talking about? I look and I see 8 recs for 55 yards. Austin is a scrub, he didn't do jack with the Rams either. Dude is just a bust unless they trying to run gadget plays.

Your eyes looking in the wrong area then.

Here are his 2018 numbers:

https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/A/AustTa00.htm

He had 8 catches true, but for 140 yards and 2 touchdowns, a career high if 17.5 yards per reception. And he also had 6 rushes for 55 yards and a 9.2 average, surpassed only by his rookie year. To say nothing of his clear impact on returns.

He produced with the few plays Linehan gave him.

Quite frankly, I love any WR that says come get me. That said, I'm enamored with Amari Cooper, Randall Cobb, Michael Gallup, and THE Michael Jackson.

Could see Austin as a 53 man cut if Pollard looks good and young guy like Johnson shows some deep threat ability.
Not sure if Hurns makes it either, especially if Cooper, Gallup and Cobb finish the PS healthy.

Locks:
Cooper, Gallup, Cobb (3)

Strong contenders/vets:
Wilson, Austin, Brown, Hurns(4)

Why is Brown on the strong contender list? It isn't for his wr abilities or deep speed. Can't be only for special teams.

1. Amari Cooper
2. Michael Gallup
3. Randall Cobb
4. Allen Hurns
5. Cedric Wilson
6. Tavon Austin

For those thinking Austin could get cut go watch him return punts last year, he’s a real threat to take it home every time, something we haven’t had since Deion. If he gets another serious injury early on however....then maybe we want his roster spot for someone who will stay healthy.

Are we hyping this guy up now?

Makes the 53
Cooper
Gallup
Cobb
Austin (He is the Punt Returner until proven otherwise)
Brown
Wilson

Possible: D.Smith

Makes the 46
That's a week to week issue depending on injuries and other issues.

RB Tony Pollard might get some WR snaps which could keep a WR off the 46.

Practice Squad (D.Smith probably not eligible)
J.Johnson
J.Guyton
R.Davis

Starters (They don't start 5 WRs. Maybe you mean WRs on the 46)
Cooper #1 WR
Gallup #2 outside WR
Cobb "starting" slot WR
Austin the starting Punt Return as of now.
If Brown makes the 53, he'll be active because of his blocking.

Hurns likely takes a pay cut. He and Austin are too much quality at too cheap a price to let go. They're just better than the younger guys.

D Smith C Wilson
J Guyton J Johnson N Brown R Davis L Lenoir

There's room for one more. If anyone, my money is on D Smith. High pick with experience, and gives us another speed threat wide. The rest of those guys we take our chances with trying to get them on the PS.

For me, it's time to move on from Brown and Lenoir. Not even JAGs. Brown is just a really tiny blocking TE. I only keep one of them on the PS as emergency depth if the other PS players just aren't ready to take the field.

Mainly Pollard is a threat to Austin, but Austin seems just too good a value to let go.

If D. Smith isn't eligible for the PS, I expect him on the roster.

Brown can go. He's shown nothing as a WR. A miniscule blocking TE. Better to go with Jarwin for the same things.

In regards to total WR on the 53, I don't recall them ever keeping 7 on cut day.

They carried 7 from game 9 to game 16 in 2018 (TE Swaim to IR after game 10 and only carried 2 RBs plus FB most of the season).

Last year they kept Brown and Cut D.Thompson, then moved Brown to IR after the initial cuts which made him eligible to return. They immediately re-signed Thompson.

Initial cut 2018
1. Hurns
2. Gallup
3. Beasley
4. Austin
5. T.Williams
6. Brown (immediately moved to IR and D.Thompson re-signed)

In season progression at WR:
Game 1: 6
Game 4: 5 (TWill moved to IR)
Game 8: 6 (Cooper Acquired)
Game 9:
A: 5 (D.Thompson cut)
B: 6 (Brown return from IR)
C: 7 (Lenoir promoted from Practice Squad)
Playoffs: 6 (Hurns moved to IR after game 16)

Brown has value.
  • Defenses play Nickel with him in the game as one of 3 WRs; whereas, defenses play base if a 2nd TE is used instead of Brown.
  • Brown crushes Strong Safeties when blocking and wins a fair share of blocks against LBs.
  • The Rams would probably sign Brown if cut because they use their WRs extensively as blockers.

Devin Smith is a wildcard.
  • This will be his 5th season in the NFL.
  • He has played 14 of a possible 64 regular season games with 3 starts.
  • Injuries derailed his career (Blew the ACL in right knee twice).
  • In the 14 games, he was targeted 31 times with 10 catches, 135 yards, 1 TD.

I think we keep only six WR's and, even bolder prediction, carry 3 on the PS. I think Cooper, Gallup, Cobb, Hurns, Austin, and Brown make it.

Hard to believe this receiver room was bottom of the barrel trash less than a year ago.
