Not just that game.

He finds the ball quite a bit.

It only looks that way because our team has been so bad at creating turnovers. And if he REALLY had a nose for the ball then he would have been starting over hacks like Wilcox who couldn't pick the ball off to save his life. Heath is a stop gap. I wouldn't get too attached.

You can absolutely argue that. He had one great game and that is just about all he has done. Hes been a 3rd string backup behind suspect starters for 3 years. If he had earned the job he would have been starting already. He basically the only guy left with any experience.
He had two pics vs Tampa Bay also. That was another good game. He's played sparingly and well. He earned more pt and should've been rewarded with it sooner.

Hes has 4 picks in 4 years in the regular season. Im not impressed in the least. Even if it was playing sparingly. And that word is very important. "sparingly". As in, wasnt good enough to start. And its not like he was playing behind Darren Woodson. He was playing behind Church and Wilcox. If you cant win out there, thats sad.

The best thing of all here is that there is a legitimate argument going on about the safety position. You've got one guy who some have fallen in love with and another who seems like he's on a mission to steal the position.

Baffling to me why anyone would be in love with Jeff Heath.

I'm not sure anyone's in love with him. He's being underrated by you and that's what I'm pointing out.

If he loses his job this year to Woods I wouldn't be surprised. His production when given a chance can't be ignored by a reasonable observer.

He had a good interview on Hanging with the Boys. Nate was impressed with his natural confidence. He appears to be from a good family that emphasized academics, and he's proud to be the eldest of several siblings so that he can lead by example.

What stands out to you more?

-4 picks in 4 years
-3rd string safety behind Church and Wilcox for 4 years

In my book those are both bad. Not sure how you call one or even two good games in his career as production. Ive watched the guy over 4 years and he whiffs on waaaaay to many tackles. Just because he happened to be in the right place 4 times in the regular season isnt saying much. The last GB game clearly is whats sticking in the minds of those that want to discount his career thus far.

IF Woods cant win the job by years end then it will say something about him. Unless I am wrong about Heath. And If I am, I will be pleasantly surprised and admit as much happily.

Wade Phillips thought Lee wasn't suited for the nickel package.
He trotted Brookings out there over Lee.

Carpenter was soon traded, but Lee still isn’t the Cowboys’ nickel linebacker. And he won’t be any time soon, according to Wade Phillips.
“I don’t think he’s suited for that role,” Phillips said.
That isn’t a sign that the coaches have given up on Lee contributing to the defense as a rookie.
The coaches are concerned that Keith Brooking, who turns 35 this month, will wear down if he plays every snap. Phillips indicated Wednesday that Lee could begin spelling Brooking in the base defense, as long as Lee isn’t nagged by a sore hamstring.

IIRC Wade favored Jason Williams over Lee as well.

Lee was a huge factor in that upset win over the Colts post Wade firing. He had 2 INTs, one returned for a TD. Imagine that, the guy who Wade thought couldn't play in the nickel ends up intercepting the great Manning twice as a rookie.
His pick six came from the nickel formation. Colts were 3 wide on that play. On Lee's second INT, we were once again in the nickel formation.

Point is, sometimes coaches go with "vets" or pet cats over other players at certain positions. It was obvious once Lee was healthy that he was a stud player that could play in the nickel lol.

Church was not going to be sitting on the bench last year. He was the captain of the defense. He had some flaws, but overall was a decent safety IMO. Wilcox was a third round pick, and someone who the Cowboys thought could turn into something with enough experience-who was also raw. Heath made the team purely due to special teams as a raw undrafted D-II player. His play in the preseason his rookie year got the coaches attention.
Heath may suck getting full time/increased playing time. He may also be competent enough for the time being before someone better beats him out. The coaching staff has watched him over the years, and I hope, made the right move going against with relative inexperience at SS due to believing Heath had matured enough as a football player to survive a heavier work load on defense.

Hell, even local media called Lee a failure, his rookie year, without even giving the guy a chance to show his stuff on the football field.

Point is, rushing to judgement either way on someone like Heath is silly. Saying he sucks because he was behind Church and Wilcox on the depth chart isn't concrete proof that he is a crappy player.
