Don't know if it was the right choice, but the way some are reacting on here, you'd think we just added the worst DC in the history of the game instead of one who has had a lot of success in that role.
zimmer should be good DC, but even if he is , it wont help this team get to champ game or SB.

I wonder too if the salary they offered was a low ball offer, they are tight with their own money!
Maybe he wanted complete control of defense, or pick players in draft, guaranteed x # of years as DC.

and yes he wasnt picking up the laundry !! lol
I would think it would come down to money or guarantees. He's 67; why not get all you can in possibly your last NFL stop?

True. What the years have shown us is that the problem is the front office. That's not changing, so we shouldn't expect the results to change.

0 way Zimmer would agree to Rex Ryan being his boss sort of..ie a consultant.

We both know what that’s about. Some of these folks would criticize both. Hell, they could have brought in Tom Landry and they’d be complaigning about the Flex

Now I understand what Jerry meant with swinging for the fences.

Zimmer, Rivera and Ryan.

Offenses in the NFL won't have a clue what to do against this fire power.

Every time the Cowboys switch DC's that wasn't in-house, the defense takes a nosedive for a few seasons.

Some players, even Pro Bowlers will have a problem adjusting to a new style of play. Some will not be suitable for the new responsibilities or role. They will have to be replaced.

For example, when Wade Phillips took over as both HC and DC for the Cowboys, he did run a 3-4 defense like Zimmer did with Parcells. However, the similarities stop there.

Under Parcells, Zimmer used a traditional 3-4 defense. The front three were big guys whose job was to hold the line and fill the gaps so the four LB's could search and destroy. The DE's were close to being almost DT's The Cowboys used Spears, Canty, Ratliff, and Hatcher. Occasionally, Ratliff was used as a NT to relieve Ferguson.

Ferguson was a huge wide body whose job was mostly to get in the way and force RB's to take a detour.

The pass rush was predicated on the "mystery" pass rusher. The front three would rush but the 4th pass rusher could be from anywhere. It could be a LB. It could be a safety. It could even be a CB. When they blitzed, we are talking about two defenders coming out of nowhere. This confused offenses which made the pass rush more effective.

In Phillip's 3-4, the DE's were more dynamic., They rushed the passer and did not lay back for possible running plays. In order to achieve this, Phillips got rid of Canty and Ferguson and replaced them with Olshansky and Ratliff. Ratliff played great against the pass but was a liability against the run.

Another element of Phillip's 3-4 was that DE Demarcus Ware became almost an automatic pass rusher. Offenses knew he was coming in, there was no mystery. In effect, their 3-4 was actually a 4-3 out of position.

I'm wondering how our two All Pro CB's are going to react to less man to man coverage under Zimmer. How does he intend to use Parsons and what will be the learning curve there? How long will it take for him to get the type of LB's he needs for his defense and what do they do in the meantime?

The issue here is that the Cowboys urgently need to upgrade their running game with at least one, probably two draft picks going to RB's and others going to the O-line. In effect, both the offense and defense will be forced to transition at the same time. That's not good.

Still holding out hope for bringing back Campo, Kiffin, and Garrett. Can't we fit them as position coaches? Let's really do this!

They could sign him because they wanted to sign him. Had nothing to do with the QB. Hargrave made $6.6 million this year. He's set to make $15 million next year, but the 49ers can cut him after that year and save cap money. Fans convincing themselves that we can't afford players because we are paying our QB is a delusion that fits well with what Jerry and Stephen are selling. Chris Jones made $26 million this year, and that's with the Chiefs paying Mahomes the highest QB salary for the year as well.

We haven't paid for quality DTs because the Joneses believe that being cheap with outside free agents is the best way to go.
Hargrave
If they cut him after 2 years on the contract, it will have been 2 years for a total of 40.6M
- i.e. 20.3M per

The "on paper" contract was 4 years, 84M.
- i.e. 21M per

Mininal differerne in the contract average either way.

Dan Quinn was an outside hire...They had a dramatic improvement immediately.

It was always gonna be the Zimmer. Only Jerry would create such a ruckus on a simple hire. Unless SJ wanted to hold onto his Whataburger coupons that get you a free whatasize on your fries and drink. Cheap arse..

When Jerry decides to go “all in” he goes “all in”…he really “swung for the fences” with the hiring of Zimmer; the dude is 67 years old and has been out of coaching for several years. So no doubt he is on top of all of the current offensive schemes in the NFL.
Now all that there is left to do is to sign Dak to a ridiculous extension, ensuring Dallas will be unable to sign/retain the players they covet on both sides of the ball.
Can’t wait for this press conference to see how Jerry spins this…

Championship!!!

Did someone say Championship yet? I didn’t read through the whole thread. But I’m so pumped we’re bringing back a guy we ran out of town before.

Maybe we should bring in Chan Gailey as an OC.
