Are you sure that's why they are holding?
I'm not sure of anything, but if theres no deal, and the reported hangup is length, and the player reportedly wants a shorter deal, logic dictates that the team prefers a longer deal.

From the teams perspective, I suppose the idea is to lock him up now at a salary that will seem low in a few years.

Then you've bargained yourself into either a holdout situation or having an unhappy QB.

Just give the guy what he wants because you're going to have to keep the guy happy one way or another.

I am pro Dak, and I think that he should get paid. I think he is a better player than most of you do, and I think he has upside.

Having said the forgoing, it seems like Dak is trying to become the highest paid player ever. I think that’s really short sighted. This is a really bad look for Dak and is really souring me on Dak.

While Dak is doing everything that he can to get every dollar he can from the Cowboys, they would be remiss to not give a really hard look at drafting a QB high. If I were the Cowboys and an acceptable substitute is there when they are on the clock they have to take a good hard look at pulling the trigger on him.
Well several people do say the offense runs through zeke so according to them we should be able to put any ole chum behind center and not skip a beat so why waste the money?

I don't know why people don't get this. Especially for someone that's a "Dak fan".
No he doesn’t want to be called the highest paid player ever, but he is trying to make the most money ever by hitting the free agent market again in 4 instead of 5 years.

He is basically going down the path of cousins. Play 2 years on the tag at most and then hit free agency. If he plays on the tag this year and then signs a 4 year deal he might as well have signed the 5 year deal.

Dak is definitely not going down the road of being a Cowboy forever with his approach. Definitely need to draft someone or have a plan B. Dak isn’t so good he can skip camp and have a good start to the year, especially with new offensive elements being put in. Playing on the tag and having a blah year doesn’t help him either.

He wants to enter the market again in 4 years for more money. He isn't look for long term. If I'm the Cowboys I'll be looking at a QB in the mid rounds.
I agree on taking a QB in the mid-rounds. We need a backup for Dak the next five years.

I am done with him. He is not a leader just proved it with his stupid party. This guy needs stars around him to do anything while a lot of QB’s in the league have a lot less talent around them and they are efficient. I would rather tank the season and draft a QB next year.
Lol name all these QBs with less talent that are more effecient.

Hint: very few QBs were more efficient last year

Dak critics: Please don't let us be stuck with Dak forever.

Also Dak critics: Dak is a team-hating bum for wanting a shorter contract.

The opposite. He wants less years on his contract, not more. Being the highest paid means nothing to him it seems.
just because he wants less years doesn't mean he wants less, lol that's the opposite of how it works. He's banking on breaking the bank with as many contracts as he potentially gets.

No highest payed QB has ever won a Super Bowl.
You pay Dak scratch any shot of a Super Bowl off your list.
Good thing he would only be the highest paid for a couple of months, then by the time the season starts he wouldn't be anymore. Too had we couldnt compete for those two months of the offseason.

Guess you didn't read highest paid player. If he wants less years, his chance of being the highest paid player goes out the window LOL. Just letting you know that if you ask for less years you are asking for less total money. It's exactly how it works.

I think people get this. What many of us don’t get is why he also insists on being paid the same or more than QBs that have proven more than he has. If he wants a concession from the team on years then he should be willing to give a concession on the dollars or the structure. It’s as simple and going to Jerry and saying “I want a 4 year deal, what will it take to get it”. Then listen to and be open to the answer. If it’s reasonable, take it and get this all over with. There is no reason at all he should be demanding a 4 year deal with more money per year than the recent 5 years deals given out to franchise QBs. He is quickly hopping in the same boat as Zeke for me. The one full of players who I don’t really like and hate that I have to cheer for them on Sundays.

It's very simple.

Few QBs have put up the numbers Dak has since entering the league. Of those that have, then slim it down to the QBs who are 26 years old or less. What does that list look like?

But if he's not signed and gets injured, he's pretty much screwed.
A class act is a class act. If a guy can't keep it classy then, oh well.

They've been negotiating with Dak way before his contract expired, to gauge his price range. So they knew what they were getting themselves into. But now he doesn't want to participate in an online training course with his teammates. So I would say good riddance. We'll find someone else. If your not going to act like a teammate then you're not going to be a teammate. Goodbye.

An organization has to put its foot down and draw a line in the sand somewhere. Or they are going to walk on by their employees.

I dont think Dak wants to be the highest paid player ever....thats just me

plus if he gets that kind of money then Mahomes may very well be the first 200 million dollar contract in nfl history

and you can buy enough banana pudding to almost fill you up with that kind of money

I thought that initially, but Dak seems to really be playing hard ball at this point.

I like Dak. I think he's a great person and a good, not great, player.

But this contract thing has soured me on him as well. I have no idea why he thinks he deserves to be paid like a top 3 QB because he is not. He's hamstringing our future by locking up so much of our salary cap that it'll be tough to win paying a QB $35 million or more.

If we could trade Dak for a 1st rounder or quality player, draft a QB high and get Cam Newton or trade for a solid guy to be the bridge for one season, that would be great.

But it's not gonna happen. Dak is gonna get paid. The contract is gonna be sky high. And he'll be a solid QB and a great person for us for the next decade. And maybe we'll win one, I'm optimistic about the coaching changes. But it's gonna be tough with that contract.

Once again......Dak wants 4 years. The Cowboys want 5. That's why this deal isn't done.

No offensive points against Philly. Biggest game of the year against a depleted team.. nothing. Certainly warrants a huge contract while keeping an eye on his next contract. lol

If Dak doesn't get his long term deal, his salary is ~27 million this years after the tag was adjusted by the Brees, Big Ben and Brady deals. I'm fine with that. The big QB deals everyone has predicted have actually gone the other way this year, except for maybe Tannerhill.

If he sits and holds out, then I don't play him when or if he returns (week 10 maybe to get his season in?). I let him know that now also.

MM has had good luck with off-brand QBs, maybe he makes Cooper a star and I LOL at Dak.

In retrospect, if we had done that with Tank and Zeke, we would have extra cap space now with either smaller contracts (Not the highest paid, at their time), or not have their services. I think JJ is getting sick of being mocked and he is using Dak as an example going forward.

Just so we all understand, using Brady, Brees, Ben, Rivers, whoever as barometers for Dak's deal makes absolutely no sense given their age. The reason you think Tannehill was the only one to get overpaid? Age, and he's still 31 but also way worse than Dak.
