After seeing it multiple times enlarged, it looks like a fake stage slap. Chris leaned in and started rolling with it before it connected.

I feel like he could have been doing that because he thought Smith was going to whisper something to him.

In my opinion, if it was staged, the Academy would have come out and said it was just a poorly made skit immediately after seeing the negative backlash from most people. Plus the way it completely took the air out of the room, and some people in attendance have condemned the Academy and Smith, makes me think it was real.

I, somehow, ended up watching a couple body language experts talk about this incident on YouTube. Across the board, they all agree it wasn't staged.

I suppose I will link 2 for anybody that cares.

It could be! I've been on the receiving and giving end of stage slaps and that looked like one, but maybe it was real. Either way, it was in poor taste by Chris Rock to make the joke and it was definitely not good that Will Smith slapped him.

Oh well. Not that I care. I think the Oscars are stupid.

If it were fake, Rock wouldn't have had the awkward response after and Smith would have come out declaring it fake because he's taking heavy fire.

I've heard every excuse in the book on why Smith was laughing at the very jokes he eventually got enraged about.

If I were a stand up comic, I'd refuse to do those stupid shows for celebrities stroking each other's ego with useless awards. Hell, if I were Chris Rock, I'd have said on national TV that I'm done with the woke-show and walked off.

Smith is an emotional bully. I can't believe anyone would defend physical assault over a freaking joke. Good God, it's gotten soft.

They are both in on the conspiracy. The only question is who is paying them the most? Smith? Rock? Or the Academy?

Seriously though, I believe the Spidey gentleman's observation of Pickett-Smith initial body language is correct. She, like the rest of the audience, were laughing at Rock's jokes. Then Rock told the G.I. Jane joke and it told a moment for the joke to register for her.

That reaction is true for most people. Good comedians will have anyone laughing at everything coming out of their mouths. Most people laugh at targeted jokes. Even targeted folks may laugh at first, think about what was said, run the joke back through their heads, and have a second reaction that is opposite their first.

Spidey's take on her reactions is true in my opinion. I did not watch much of the video but I would assume he further talks about how PIckett-Smith's reaction influenced Smith's stupidity--since it was not solely the joke that itself that provoked him but was the look on her face.

Anywho, BAFTA's weighing in on the incident:

BAFTA Says Will Smith Would Have Been “Removed From Ceremony” After Slap
By Alex Ritman
MARCH 30, 2022 3:35AM

<snip>

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter the morning that the BAFTA TV Award nominations were unveiled, BAFTA execs offered their thoughts on the infamous incident that took place at Sunday night’s Oscars ceremony, when Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage.

“They would be removed from the ceremony,” said Sara Putt, chair of BAFTA’s television committee and deputy chair of BAFTA, when asked what BAFTA would do if put in a similar situation. Putt noted that there would no opportunity for the individual in question to later collect any award or give a speech, as Smith had controversially been allowed to do at the Dolby Theater. “They would not be in the buildings, so they would not physically be able to collect their award,” she said.

For me, BAFTA's hindsight would have been interesting to observe if a (crazy) similar instance had happened several weeks ago when they honored Smith as Best Actor for King Richard.

Will has some masculinity issues tied into Jada cheating on him with another dude in their own home. He's all scrambled up about how to restore that husband protective figure...unfortunately he can't after something like that occurs. He needs to leave her to regain his place in the world as a strong man.

Chris knows all this, and if that really soft joke (compared to a roast?) was enough to provoke Will, that shows how uncomfortable he is as the man of that household. Definitely didn't deserve that slap where if he retaliates they both look like complete fools embarrassing everybody; even more so if it became a real back n forth.

Good on Chris

The whole point IS that it's in poor taste.

Smith's behavior and partying after the event tells the story about his true lack of depth. He might play characters with depth; he is lacking in that and a phony. Tearful apology to everyone but the person he offended followed by a standing ovation from those other phonies.

Rock and every comedian they book is going to take their shots, that's what they do and everyone that shows up knows to expect that.

It is interesting that Smith's wife gets some kind of pass and she's the one with the mouth, some kind of piece of work that one is. Openly says she loves the way she looks a few days before that event and then that takes place? Both Smith and his wife are phonies.

I watched that Bayless/Sharpe reaction and thought Sharpe made a very astute observation about the act itself and the significance. The greatest disrespect a black man can give another is to spit on him or slap him. That was a calculated act by Smith because men react with closed fists against each other, they do not slap another man. That was nothing more than an act for that woman he married. That's his punishment.

I believe that slap was about more than the insult. It’s well documented that his wife has slept around on him and that’s emasculating in any demographic. His apology wasn’t heartfelt and reeks of a PR person crafting it for him.

I heard a woman call up a radio show I listen to, and she remarked that she had the disease and was surprised how much hair was still on Jadas head. This woman lost all her hair including her eyebrows. It speaks to the level of narcissism with Jada, that she’s merely losing some hair and The whole world has to stand still. If she was undergoing chemo for cancer, that’s one thing, but this is vanity at its greatest

both of them can kiss my black and Chris Rock is a classy dude

Agree. That hate filled, ranting, psychopath should be the last one to remark on this

I remember when he used to just be funny
Yeah, back in the day he was hilarious and like many in Hollyweird, they seem to be in a cult.

They take themselves and their opinions too seriously, like it's more important than just regular folks.

The power that some feel in affecting the opinions and views of others is intoxicating and addictive.

Who in the hell cares what Jim Carrey thinks about Will Smith and Chris Rock?

"I don’t give two craps what people feel about this bald head of mine ‘cause guess what, I love it." - an interview with Jada Smith, 4 days ago.

Maybe I’m looking at this from the perspective of a young-ish person that hasn’t ever been married. I don’t think I’d hit someone over that, unless they had done similar things in the past. Especially not on live TV. I’d have no problem hitting someone who insulted or threatened my wife.

She's a total phony. If she didn't give a crap what anyone thought about her bald head, she wouldn't have been sensitive about that joke. She could have laughed it off. Will Smith should have been arrested right in the middle of the show and should have been made ineligible for his Oscar. You don't get to haul off and hit someone just because you don't like what they said. If any of us had done that, we would have been arrested. Smith shouldn't get off the hook just because he's a rich celebrity. If I had been running the show, he would have been apprehended and taken out in handcuffs.

You're more sensitive about his slap then he was about the joke.

Maybe you should light a candle and start a bubble bath, relax a little.

The irony in all of this is people's hatred and/or insecurities of roasting. That's the point, the job & the objective. That's what makes the garbage award show remotely tolerable.
I hope and pray that comics stop hosting them.

Is there any way we can pair these self righteous celebrities w/ the idiots that show up to stand up gigs and talk through the stand up act? Put it all in one mess so I can avoid that toxic BS.

I thought you did stand up? Why would you want these people in the audience?
