The price for not keeping Dalton Schultz

You're forgetting that had the Cowboys kept Schultz and that massive contract, Pollard would likely not be back for another year and the RB room would really be hurting. Schultz is easily replaceable by Fergie/Shot/Schoon combo at triple the savings.

The front office felt like TE was a need and couldn't risk waiting until round 3 to get the player they wanted.

Schoonmamer was considered a reach at 58 overall.

Had we kept Schultz for 1 year, we could've gone Torrence, Mims, Drew Sanders, Kendre Miller or a lot of other players.

Would you rather have kept Schultz and gone with a different pick at 58?

Or are you glad the front office moved on from Dalton and that savings of $9 million this year?
You are dead on correct. Sucks either way because overpaying a JAG sucks and over drafting a JAG sucks. Wish they just flat out passed on Shoemaker and went Torrence. The line woulda been dominant.

Schoon is a better blocker and will be equal to Schultz receiving. He wasn't a reach at 58. Not at all. I'm glad they moved on from Schultz and that paycheck. Give me that rookie deal.

BTW the FO didn't feel like TE was a need. They wanted to improve the blocking. A chance to upgrade the blocking and replace Schultz fell into their laps.
Shoonmaker is basically James Hannah. Very very unlikely he will ever be anything close tl Shultz as a reciever

There were few that I read: Sporting News, Pro Football Network and pff.com (whoever they are) actually said it was a reach.
To them it may have been according to their draft rankings. I guarantee you the Cowboys board looked much different to what those publications.

When a team drafts different then what they think is best for that team it's a reach. Happens to every team. That's the flaw in looking at pre-draft rankings. They don't consider the teams perspective only their own.

Actually he is wrong. The Cowboys didn't like Torrence for starters. That's been well documented.

James Hannah??? Where did that come from? Schoon walks in a better blocker than Hannah and Schultz. His receiving skills will surprise a lot of people. Equal of Schultz if not better. Remember Schultz's numbers were inflated because of his targets.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me that Schultz whiffed on blocks at the most inopportune time.
If our offense is predicated on a blocking tight end, then that tight end needs to block, especially at critical times in the game.

Hanna was a blocking TE with couple traits people hoped would translate as a receiver. Shoonmaker os basically the same. He is incredibly raw as a receiver, and is 25.

Inflated because of targets? You do realize Shultz caught well above 70% of his targets right? Inflated because of targets.....you are just making things up hoping no one notices

There is nothing raw about Schoonmaker's receiving ability. He was just underused at Michigan. You might want to look up Schultz's stats at Stanford. He wasn't used much either.

Hanna was a 6th round pick. They knew he was actually raw as a route runner. He also wasn't a blocker at OU, he developed that with the Cowboys.

Well said.

I'm constantly amazed at how people come up w/ some viewpoints.

Dallas could not keep everyone, and Dalton struggled last year.
They moved on because thye felt they could get better for cheaper.

For every fan that whines about a reach there are real life examples of guys like Tyler Smith who proved they were very much worth their selection spot.

If Dallas gets the eval correct then it doesn't matter at all here.
They say he is a day 1 rotational TE.
He is more blocker than WR day 1 which is fine as they added Cooks to get a lot more targets to actual WRs.
And both young 2nd year TEs are natural receivers.

Unfortunately, Schultz had a bad season and specifically game when he could least afford it, His last one as a Cowboy.
His value around the league spoke for itself.

Dallas didn't see him as a long term solution and moved on.
They can not keep everyone so it makes a lot of sense.

I’ll wait till the rookie plays.

Well if that were to have happned they probably would've went RB in round 2 or 3 to get a guy they wanted.

But that's not how things played out. Hence the topic of this thread.

I find your assessment of Schoon in regard to Schultz to be more than a bit of a stretch. I'll concede blocking, but nothing else about their games suggest Schoon is equal or better.

And taking Torrence would have improved the blocking by a quantum leap.
