Not a fan of him, but saw reports the vikings like him.
I guess we’ll find out in April how much they like him. These QBs that win National Championships with highly talented teams don’t usually fair well in the NFL. Look no further than Bryce Young. I know it’s only been one season with him but he wasn’t very impressive.

I never said it was.

It certainly is relevant to signing free agents in 2025 though, which is my point. The value of Hankins contract was provided as an example to put the size of the dead money in perspective. That dead money would have brought in a lot of free agent talent.
Dak's current contract pays him 40M per.

If they had taken cap hits of 40M each season, then they wouldn't have a 40M dead-cap hit in 2025 and the 2024 cap hit would be 40M instead of 55M.

The 40M in 2025 and the amount above 40M in 2024 (55M - 40M = 15M) was all used to pay other players in past years.

Obviously.

The most chaos that could be created is if Dak goes to Denver and Sean Payton wins a Super Bowl with him.

Top 5 teams for Dak

Note Dallas would have $40M+ in dead money for 2025 after Dak is gone.
That's enough to sign 20 Johnathan Hankins based on his new deal. (or equivalent free agents)
Staggering mismanagement.
All teams have players who potentially have dead money on the books if they don’t extend them.

They just let their Dak Prescott go to Atlanta.
Dak is better than Cousins but some of you can keep listening Skip Bayless and the others. Even a notch better than Cousins would benefit the Vikings.

Hawks
Raiders
Vikings
Saints
Giants (least likely due to the obvious)

I left the Broncos off because I think they’ll have a top 3 pick for sure and will take a QB in the 2025 draft. Chance this happens with the Vikes as well.

Probably so?

I would say that dead money usually is created by:

1) Players being released before they complete their contract

or

2) Contract restructures that push salary cap hits forward, especially into void years.

The Saints have their Dak already - Derek Carr. Why the heck would they want Carr II?

Dak seems to be a good guy...I feel he's overwhelmed with the expectations of being a QB for America's team. If he stays, I'm all in...if he leaves, I wish him luck.

Just to elaborate, you are absolutely correct here. This is a good understanding that many lack.

My criticism is that management has mortgaged the future. The past benefit that you described has its cost in the future- just like an idiot with a credit card.

Dak plays on better teams than Cousins and has no playoff success.
Dak’s won 2 playoff games so he has had some playoff success. His regular season teams have been good but his “playoff” teams have mostly sucked. The Cowboys aren’t the same team in the playoffs.

I think that they're trying to stop that cycle of excessive "credit card" usage.

I'm not against it altogether, but would avoid it with the QB contract.
- There is much more flexibiity to defer cap hits for four 10M per contracts than for one 40M per contract.

Agents have huge leverage when they know a team must extend a QB contract in order to function at the beginning of free agency.

Even if they re-sign Dak, they've reduced the agent's leverage because it's obvious that they're not dependent giving Dak a new contract.

If they don't extend Dak now and if he is great this year and they make it to the Super Bowl, then I don't care if that gives the agent leverage.
- Dak's not going to leave in free agency if the Cowboys match other offers.
- The money gaining from endorsements is much better with the Cowboys that with other teams (for Dak).

I'm anxious to see Trey Lance in the preseason.
- I've extensively reviewed all 4 of his NFL starts.
- If he had been given 38 starts like Justin Fields in Chicago, I'm convinced Lance would be much better than Fields.
- He was good enough that they made him the starter for game 1 and 2 of his 2nd season.
- He probablly would have had more starts if not for the season ending injury...
