Said it before and I'll say it again: the back and the brain, still so many unknowns particularly when cut on. The back is unique in that it can be great one day and the next incapacitating for seemingly inexplicable reasons. I've been worried about his back since the Skins game. Short of getting pounded by 300 lbrs I THINK, repeat THINK I know exactly the internal pain, numbness and weakness he was dealing with. I'm still shocked he was able to do what he did in that game. I rank it on par with Aikman's 94 SF NFC Champ pounding sans debilitating injury for courage.

I think you have your dates mixed up.

Romo signed his new deal in March of 2013. He had the cyst removal 2 months later.

I wish reality would bring back the search function but it was either Fisher or Sully who said on twitter that Romo brought up the back soreness a few weeks after signing the new deal. I remember for a fact reading this.

Sounds like Romo pulled a fast one on ol' Jerry.

Cowboys screwed up once again big time. Back injuries are serious, and you are never ever the same after you injure it. We had a chance to get Manziel and we passed, and I am afraid that this is going to haunt us for a long time. I don't think that Romo can last the season.

We also just need to look at the facts...

Romo is being held out of a practice, where he is not even being hit, 8 months removed from surgery.

This team hasn't been forthright with injuries at all, going from day to day, and then to IR the next.

The rehab time he has, is just unfathomable considering it's a daily thing.

He's already going to be held out of preseason games.

Today's interviews don't help with the doubt that Romo can go a full season.

Those of us with back issues know they are chronic. I still play sports but I pay for ti it the next day.

Love Romo, but I've never been comfortable with the PR round it

Good article

For a second let's forget Manziel the Personality and ask the basic question, how do you not draft the quarterback sitting at the top of your draft board when your starting qb is in this sort of shape?

Because forgetting the personality for a second leaves you stuck with the personality for a lot longer than that.

Back problems + 34 + blindside hits + loves to scramble = trouble.
Hit's on the QB comes multiple times a game, sack or no sack.

Idk but I'm sort of shocked we're even discussing this now. I mean I posted a picture of him playing basketball months ago. There have been pics and mentions of him playing indoor soccer. What's the hold up now?

Probably just taking a conservative approach.

So what's the story? Is he practicing, is he playing at all in the preseason? Obviously I've not kept up.

Cowboys do have a 1st round QB - his name is Brandon Weeden.

From the man himself:

What the conditioning like on a day off?

“My days are, whether you practice or not, you have a lot of other things you have to do just to continue to improve and get better and obviously with the back but also as an athlete and a competitor. That’s what I’ll do day in and day out. There’s multiple things. Each day has got certain things that are way structured the same and there are things other days that you have to do.”

Did you talk to Troy Aikman about his back issues?

“Yeah, I talked to him. You talk to a lot of people. Troy is one of them. He went through it. Like I said, you have to change your routine. Instead of just going in and bench pressing and doing these other things that you do to get yourself ready, you need to incorporate this routine as part of it. You strengthen all of those areas around it.

Is routine Aikman had in 93 same as now?

“It’s pretty much the same. Somewhere along the way someone found out if you strengthen everything around there, your back doesn’t get used as much. So that’s what you do.If anything, it will probably help you because those are areas you need to strengthen anyway. I think what you find is all of those guys who are doing a lot of that stuff are younger now. They’re finding out the core is what keeps you healthy. More trainers and more people are incorporating that into their systems than they were 15-20 years ago.”

How much more time in training room this year than last?

“I’ll probably spend more. That’s also because I want to ensure the fact I can practice as much as humanely possible, that you can be there. When you watch me play, I doubt it looked any different to the naked eye. And it doesn’t because you’re going through it and you feel great. And then you did a little bit much because you lifted and you did eliptical and then you went and did jumps or something then all of a sudden you’re like OK, it’s sore, it’s heavy. And then all of a sudden it’s like OK, I’ve got a cold tub. OK, it’s going to take two more hours. Let’s wait until tomorrow. Oh, you’re great again. It’s an injury that’s a little different because it’s not like you just go boom, you’re back. You have to always manage it. It would be like if someone had an ACL. It takes a long time to strengthen. They’re back and they can go, but are they really back? You don’t know. If you get hurt again it’s like why did you come back so early. But if they’re healthy enough to go…But are they really as strong…You’ve got to be smart and not do something stupid.”

The "routine" that he refers to is that 3-4 hrs of rehab work prior to suiting up.

Still not concerned?

Maybe I need to go to bed, when I read the topic title, I assumed Dorsett for some reason.

Because JF played in a gimmick offense at A&M and gimmick offense QBs suck in the NFL. See Vince Young

If Romo goes down we can tank and take a pro style offense Qb next year, there are a couple good ones available

Dont jinx us....I DO NOT want to see Brandon Weeden starting for the dallascowboys.....that will be about as pathetic as it gets...

They need to shelve Romo until game 3 of the preseason.....and find a running game fast....were is Emmitt Smith when you need him..

Not trying to do that, back problems are no joke. And he takes a ton of hits. The one thing he can work on this summer is getting the ball out fast, and throwing it away instead of taking meaningless hits.

I think he'll be fine and the back won't be a big issue this season.

For some reason I'm more worried about Dez Bryant's back.

The assumption you're making is this is necessary for him to minimally get ready for a practice, as opposed to a long term plan to strengthen his core.

I think you are making the assumption. Tony has already talked about his rehab time previously and said this would be something he would have to do all year.
