Is something wrong with this defensive scheme?

You realize the year the won the Super Bowl, it was all because of their defense, right? Manning was pretty bad in those playoffs.

Manning would help this team none with how bad this defense is. And he's not as mobile as Romo. Any break down in the line and he's toast.

So what happened to this vaunted defense all those other years?

I don't know how anyone could look at the list of names on this defense and think, "Gosh it has to be the scheme."

They function hand in hand. This scheme requires elite talent, specialized talent in certain positions, to truly click.

In other words, we had no business going all in on the scheme without the same equal commitment from the front office to get the players to make it work.

Instead we have been victims of circumstance and trying to take a very simple scheme and think we can have mediocre talent that does not fit in it, work.

You are so brilliant...

Seattle runs it. They suck.

Seattle does not run it. Read up a little on it and you will see it is not the same. They basically run a 3-4 scheme with 4-3 looks. We run a very plain and about as basic of a version of the Tampa 2 as possible, except we keep thinking we can just play more press and have the same thing.

Saying we run it is like saying Phillips ran the same 3-4 that Parcells did. Sorry. Not the same.

That does not stop the sell job that we are. Honest.

I have to admit, I feel a little silly with this Marinellimania ripped t-shirt on.

I'd say that would be correct except this defense is not supposed to be playing a traditional Tampa 2 most of the time. I don't think many if any teams are doing that. It's too easy to beat esp without elite players at the 3, Mike and FS and a good or better pass rush.

We're in a nickel, dime or other SP a pretty good % of the time. I don't even know if Marinelli wants to play a true Tampa 2.

Given that the DL is in obvious need you can bet that every other team with "extra" linemen are pimping them out to Jerry,,, maybe there's a deal to be had,,,,

I feel safe in saying that he does.

He's a seasoned coach who has success with it. He's not going to sudden develop what Gus Bradley and now Dan Quinn installed in Seattle.

In other words, do not look for a lot of creative variation. It is fairly rare you see a coach at his age do something revolutionary.

I do not see a lot of teams looking to trade away one of the more precious commodities on an NFL roster.

I don't think they play a lot of Tampa 2. Their DL does more two gap and shoot and hold than just shooting the gap like in a true Tampa 2. They play a lot more rolling zones and a triangle I haven't figured out yet. They have better safety play and a tremendous front 7 with much much better corners. If we have 3 or 4 guys that could start for them I'd be pleased. They play a 'hybrid' defense.

I don't think he's said that at all or at least very much in the true sense. He talks about hybrid defenses even saying he doesn't care about 3-4 or 4-3 and for good reason. Most defenses in the league run multiple looks and do multiple things out of the same formations. We run a nickel a lot of the time and that's no where near a Tampa 2. Our DL plays a lot like a Tampa 2 when not in the nickel.

Seattle's defense is about gap integrity. That is how you have players like Red Bryant playing DE.

I do not know what Marinelli is trying to do, but gap integrity does not seem to be a focus right now. It certainly wasn't last night.

The rushmen went wild and unless they were chasing down backs and horse collaring them, they were not doing much.

And Seattle runs some 3-4 but much more 4-3. They just shoot and hold maintaining one gap control and they do this a good deal more than a two gap defense. They also shoot the gaps.

I have not seen the game, but did the Chargers punt? At least once!

I agree with this. My guess is what you saw last night was a combination of wild uncontrolled play, not knowing a lot better, and Marinelli wanting to see who could rush the passer. The latter may be more of a part of it although that is speculation. We need a pass rush so badly I suspect he wants to see who can do it separating the wheat from the chaff. We do have guys who can control at least one gap in Bass, McClain, Melton, and Crawford; speaking in general. We might have one or two who can play two gaps.
