Cooley's opinion: RG3 is going to Dallas

I'm not sure what the odds are of the top QBs being gone before pick four. But the odds are there. In that case, you have to cover yourself.

So, I ask this. Let's say that we "play the percentages" and simply wait until the draft having only Romo on our roster at QB. We fully expect Wentz, Goff, and Lynch to be there...or at least one of them...because, you know, percentages.

Then, let's say that amazingly our nightmare scenario occurs, and all are taken.

What then?

All we would have is Romo. Do we reach and take another QB at four? I know you might say, "take one later, or trade down". Now, we are basically forcing our hand. We have to take one. Which means we overpay or overdraft.

Again, no harm is done if we sign a FA QB. We cover our backside in case the impossible happens. You have to plan for this. You can kill yourself ,"playing percentages ". Griffin is no worse than any other backup option.

Highly unlikely that pick 1, pick 2, and pick 3 are all QBs

When was the last time that has ever happened?

Playing the percentages doesn't mean you take a QB at all costs...........if a once a decade event happens and 3 QBs are selected in a row, then yea, we have to go another direction because there are no other QBs worthy of a pick that high. We then have our choice of Tunsil, probably the best OT to come out in the past 5 years or Bosa, ranked by most scouts as the best defensive player in the entire draft.

And Moore is under contract for next season, so if this once in a decade scenario happens and we don't get a top QB, then we roll with Moore being the backup and pray Romo doesn't get hurt. Percentages are that RG3 and Manzel are not significantly better than Moore, who did throw for over 400 yards his last game.

The overkill in salary cap drain, with both Griffin and a #4 pick would put future contracts with all the current offensive line in jeopardy in the near future.

The #4 pick is on a rookie cap deal and RG3 is not going to get very much guaranteed money from anybody, will have to be a "show me" deal.

So how exactly is this draining our salary cap to the point we have to let our lineman go?

As does the No. 2 pick in the 2012 draft...Robert Griffin III.

Most fans say Dallas should get a QB at 4 because it seems like the best shot at a franchise guy. Then turn their nose up at a No. 2 pick who made a Pro Bowl his first season because he is a bust pick in the top 5.

My mind is spinning with this stuff.

Yea, its too risky to take a QB in the top 10, we need to go the safe route and draft a CB since they never bust................cough *Claiborne* cough

oh wait....

I agree. But is there a guarantee that one of those QBs will be around at pick four? If not, then what do we do?

It's a virtual guarantee that at least one QB will be there. If not, you take the best non-QB in the draft and consider yourself lucky to get a good value. That said, we'll also probably (and ought to) bring in the best available FA QB for our system, whoever that's determined to be.

We need to bring 4 QBs to camp, anyway. Let Moore battle it out for the backup role with another veteran QB, and then draft a guy for QB3 who doesn't see the field for at least a year as we develop him behind Romo. If that's RGIII, he's not my first choice, but whatever. Signing a vet is not going to keep us from drafting a QB, too.

Good points Idgit.

We gotta do something at QB. It absolutely killed us this year. It might also be the best way to help Tony out at this point in his career if we need to stay in contention to qualify for the postseason for a stretch again next year. I can't think of a better way to get some insurance.

I know we're all depressed and frustrated right now, but I fully expect Dallas to be the preseason frontrunners again with Dez and Tony back healthy and the possibility of some FA signings and the high draft position. The rest of the division is just that weak. Filling that QB of the future role and keeping the cap in shape and the OL locked down might give us an open window for years to come if we handle everything right and manage another quality draft. Not getting a QB out of this if there's one there to be had would suck.

5 years at #4 slot money? C'mon. And RGIII is probably looking at about $5 million a year for a multi year deal. That's some real money for a 3 person position.

Cowboys need a veteran behind Romo. RG3 would be a good pickup for this purpose. Also, I don't see how this changes the need to draft a QB. Moore should be shown the door as well. Jerruh is all about right now, I don't think he was going to use #4 on a QB anyway........

If RG3 becomes a Cowboy, my 46 years of fandom will come under question. It is a sickening thought to think he is in the same uniform as Troy and a Roger.

LOL

That was three years ago. In a system tailor-made for him. Pre-injury.

Only a complete imbecile would think that has any relation to him now or what he could be in Dallas.

If and when we bring him in talk to me later. I Believe in a new setting he can be a good backup to Romo. People that think he is washed up have no clue. I have been watching football for 45 years and have seen athletes that were washed up on one team and were rejuvenated on a new team.

I'd be interested to see RGIII in Dallas. He didn't develop much as a pocket passer in Washington because his OL sucked. Behind our OL, he'd often have a chance to eat a ham sammich as he waits for Witten to get open. And with essentially a year off, he's finally healthy.

Wouldn't hurt to at least kick the tires on this guy. If he passes his physical I say bring him onboard.

Yeah, like Romo has lead us anywhere.

A couple playoff wins, and a few "hey we almost made it to the playoffs".

Yeah we are so better off with Romo and company.

Romo is one million times the qb that that bum could ever hope to be and if you can't see that well can't fix stupid

They goofed up with their coaching hire.

RG3 needed someone like Gary Kubiak to coach him.

Snyder wanted Gruden and he lost RG3 because of that. He can't dink and dunk. He's not a west coast Rich Gannon type of QB.

He's a downfield thrower.

RG3 is all about the big play and if Romo is out I think a QB like him would be perfect to try and run the ball with and establish a deep pass play action game.

With our OL and the right playcalls I think he would be fantastic here strictly as a backup.

I agree with you here. RG3 would work well in a system that uses the deep pass and play action. However, I doubt they will use him that way. They will probably try and train him to be a pocket passer and and force him to throw timing passes.

I'm putting my hat in the RG3 bandwagon. That way we don't sign Johnny football. Not that RG3 would work well in Dallas. But party animal Johnny would wreck this team beyond repair.

I think it's Griffin.

The interesting question will be, will the Cowboys still take a QB at #4 IF they had Griffin on board?

There are very good points for and against.

You want your top 5 QB to develop....

Make him compete with a former top 2 QB

NFL talent evaluators are divided on Robert Griffin III's future

Skeptics attribute Griffin's rookie success to something that can't be replicated: an element of surprise. He thrived greatly as a rookie partly because of his world-class athleticism, but largely because he directed an offense that Mike Shanahan and Kyle Shanahan - taking cues from Baylor's playbook - tailored to his strengths.

"He was running a system the league had never seen before. Not on that scale," an NFC front-office executive said. "They didn't know how to stop it. But coaches are smart. They did their homework in the offseason, came back the next year, and that element of surprise doesn't exist anymore. So, RG doesn't scare them anymore."

Griffin had his knee reconstructed between the 2012 and 2013 seasons, and an ankle dislocation sidelined him for six weeks in 2014. The injury history prompted one AFC defensive coach who has faced the quarterback to say that regardless of the team that signs Griffin, or the system he plays in, he will not experience sustained success.

"No. He's done," he said. "He can't stay healthy. Running the type of system that he needs to run, his body isn't able to hold up in the NFL. He can't play the way he needs to play and stay healthy."

Another AFC assistant coach said he didn't see why Griffin couldn't run a system similar to what Cam Newton runs for Carolina. However, two critics pointed out that Griffin lacks Newton's body type and durability.

One NFC executive thought it might serve Griffin well to be a backup again next season.
"His problem right now is his accuracy, which is a direct reflection of his bad footwork and mechanics in the pocket," the NFC executive said. "Although he is fast, he is not the dynamic change-of-direction athlete that many think he is. This offseason should be all about getting back to the basics for him. He'll be a good backup for someone that can provide a spark off the bench.

"Coming out, you loved his playmaking ability and the touch he showed on his deep ball. You knew that he wasn't a finished product and that it would be an adjustment for him to learn the different coverage reads and sight adjustments."

The OL in Washington was not the problem.

Griffin has poor pocket awareness. He has slow eyes and cannot process coverages fast enough to get the ball out quickly and to the right man. Those issues are what caused the sacks and made him absorb a lot of punishment.

And yes it will hurt to kick the tires. Sign Griffin, you can kiss a young QB draft prospect goodbye.
