Matt Verderame seems like a talented writer. I especially like the part where he writes:

Despite being parts of different franchises, the duo remain close friends. The kind of friends that talk regularly. The kind of friends that desperately want to beat the hell out of each other when the chance arises.

That would inspire me personally with more confidence in a future Jones/Payton general manager/head coach marriage except I recall another strong friendship involving Jones and Jimmy Johnson. Payton has the benefit of hindsight in regard to Jones' previous working relationship with a good friend. And that circumstance negates any confidence that I might have held.

And the benefit of Payton having worked here himself - after that situation - and also knowing the man as well or better than he knew his own owner. Choosing to spend time together, with no obligation. That tells me his experience knowing Jones the man, and working for him, was a positive one. You don't "hang out" with people you don't like or don't want to be around, or hated working for. You also don't pass up a head coaching offer from the Raiders if you don't like working for Jones in Dallas.

What's also clear is that his patience with and for those that he cares for and appreciates is stronger than any owner in the league. His patience with Garrett is proof of that. And Payton knows he's a better coach than that guy getting out of bed in the morning before coffee!

In a heartbeat. Payton is twice the coach Garret is and ten times the offensive mind.
Then why did we beat them? I’m not saying he’s not better than JG but I don’t think he’s the some football coaching god that people make him out to be. Without Brees he wouldn’t have near the success he’s had and in the past 5 years he’s had three 7-9 seasons with Brees.

From someone who lives in Louisiana, Payton isn't nor has any intention of leaving the Saints! He has an almost God like reverence here amongst Saints fans! When he leaves it will be to enjoy his retirement!

Noted.

But I think the appeal of the Saints job will take a serious hit when Brees retires. And despite being the Saints coach, Payton still has strong ties to Texas.

Where did Payton's offenses rank in points scored during those "three 7-9 seasons?"

Well, I am not attempting to convince anyone else of the impression and expectation I took from Verderame's article. Those are mine and mine alone--practical or not.

No idea, nor do I care. Again, he’s working with arguably one of the top 3 qb’s in the league. In 2016 we had the number one rush defense, mainly due to our offense, so does that mean the HC, OC or DC should have got the majority of credit for that.

I’m looking at overall record, not points. I don’t care about points if you’re a sub .500 team. That means notjing if you can’t win games.

Again, no doubt Peyton is better but if he’s THAT much better why did we beat them and why does he have 3 losing seasons in the past 5 with one of the best QB’s in the league?

It's information you don't want to see. I get it.

Who he, himself rescued off the scrap heap, with a bum shoulder that no one else wanted. Ask Scott Linehan, Jason Garrett and the Dolphins.

Because he's an offensive mastermind who can't fix the defense as well as the offense. But that's one more mastermind title than our "master of none" current coach has.

I dont see Brees retiring 1st off, every indication he's given with being asked a thousand times this year is that he's playing till he can't walk. After the season he's had there is no reason to do otherwise. Payton dropped the 2nd round pick on Bridgewater for a reason. Even if he hadn't his ego would make him stay to see what he could do with Tayson Hill. There has been absolutely no indication, of any desire by Payton to want to leave and he would be given free reign for however long it takes to find his next qb! I could be wrong I guess, but it all sounds like unicorns spreading fairy dust!

So is that your answer? You don't know if you'd rather have Payton or Garrett?
I'm saying who the hell was Payton before? Where are the Saints teams in the seasons that Brees doesn't have a career year?

We all think he's better. The Dolphins clearly thought they were getting a SB coach in Jimmy Johnson, but without Aikman, he did nothing in Miami.

It certainly wouldn;t be because of diminishing skills. But he wouldn;t be the first guy to go out on top, on his terms, either. He's made hundreds of millions already, how much can someone need? And you can't buy time.

Payton dropped the 2nd round pick on Bridgewater for a reason.

Bridgewater is a free agent after the season.

I don't deny that it's a far-fetched scenario for sure.

I'm saying who the hell was Payton before?

The guy who resurrected Kerry Collins career.
The guy that Parcells saw enough in to hire to run his offense.
The guy smart enough to find Tony Romo.

Still scoring in the top 10 league wide. See for yourself:

And we now have a guy in place who's done "nothing" for over a decade. At least Payton and Johnson has success at one point in their careers.

Man those guys are stealing all my thread-starter material!
But......actually, if you combine both ideas (with Richard obviously becoming DC instead of HC).....................

You're looking like a pretty fart smeller, regardless of the radio cock block.

@TexasFrog does Payton still live in Southlake/Westlake? I thought he sold his home.

He sold and I believe lives all year in NO. At least that is what I read after his divorce.

This is just for conversation purposes based on Jerry Jones' recent comments and some chatter that I've been hearing.

But how would you personally feel about the following scenario:

There are rumors that Drew Brees might call it quits after this season, especially if he and the Saints manage to win the Super Bowl. If that happened, word is that Sean Payton who look to leave the Saints organization as well. And rumor is that he still has a clause in his contract that he can void it upon any changes in ownership (which has occurred already given Tom Benson's passing).

Payton still has a home in Texas and his son plays high school ball here.

Speaking hypothetically at this point, but if Payton was the "opportunity" in the coming weeks that Jones was referring to, would you be for or against the idea of Payton returning to the Cowboys to coach this team?
Is this even a question? Answer come on down Sean!!!

A SB winning coach with a high powered offense? Yea, sign me up! I know Dak wouldn’t put up the numbers Brees does but Payton is smart enough to play to Dak’s strengths.
