I guess the Cowboys decided that Lawrence's new contract didn't overwhelm their cap now did they?
.

Are you trying to start some sort of argument? The Cowboys signed Lawrence. That speaks for itself. Whether that was a good decision or not remains to be seen.

I am not "for it" or "against it" but it carries an abnormal amount of risk vs. what he has produced and it has the "possibility" of turning into another bad contract like we had with Dez. Let's hope that isn't the case.

Gee if signing Lawrence is a big risk just think of how many other teams would have been thrilled to have had the chance to bid for him. Before free agency started Lawrence was listed as the TOP free agent on at least THREE lists on websites. I'm not trying to start an argument just pointing out that your opinion wasn't necessarily right about his contract overwhelming the cap.

I, for one, think that the deal agreed upon will be good for both sides. I also think that DLaw will turn out to be worth the signing. However, to play a bit of advocate for Verdict, let's be honest, Jerry has had the luck of Charlie Brown with some of his trades and deals. The last of which was Dez, to Verdict's credit. I don't think this deal will be a problem for our team. However, I understand Verdict's reluctance to share my optimism here.

I don’t think you grasp the concept of my point of view, but that’s ok.

I think the deal is a little bit “rich” in terms of the percentage of the cap his contract ties up. He may turn out to be worth the cap hit. But if he doesn’t that sort of hit can really leave a hickey.

For instance what happens in game 1 of this year if Tank snaps a femur and it ends up being a career ender? Well that well obviously be most unfortunate. But hey that’s football. But you can’t discount that risk.

The problem I see is that he has been SO consumed with getting paid (much like Dez did) that I worry a little by that this red flag MAY come back to haunt us. He also has suspension and injury concerns, as well as his production drops off at the end of the season.

I will be cheering for him as loud as anyone. The Cowboys have made the decision. I hope it turns out to be a great contract. But yes I have my concerns about this one. Let’s hope that he is well worth his cap him.

I am hoping that he plays out his entire contract because otherwise his signing bonus gets prorated over a shorter time period driving up the true average cost per year significantly.

I appreciate your thoughtful, mature and insightful reply.

Oh, I know full well that the risk of injury is there. Especially since he toyed about with his shoulder. I too hope that this contract will be good. I just think/hope that this contract will be better than Dez's contract was.

I do too. If I was the Cowboys GM, I would have explored his trade value. It would be interesting to know what the trade value on Tank was.

I would have to as I stated. I have to think that they probably did at one point and realised they didn't like what they heard.

I agree with your point on Bryant being a mistake to extend him that long and for that much but lets also be honest here that just about EVERY team has contracts they wish they hadn't signed after they were signed. Some only a year after an extension was signed. Yes Jones has made mistakes, but he is not the only GM that has made them, far from it. And no I'm not a huge Jones fan but but along with his mistakes he has done some good things too.

Teams have insurance for career ending injuries

They player gets his guaranteed money and the team gets their salary cap space back

And that exposure is usually only in Year One of the Deal

But in your worst case scenario on an injury Year One then DAL would keep DLaw on the IR for several seasons and pay his salary and cap hit year to year like he was healthy until his guaranteed money was gone... that is when you lean on your bench and drafting abilities

That type of injury is extremely rare and comes with the game..... every team takes chances on long term deals.... it is SOP for star players

I don’t think I understand what you are saying. Are you saying that in game 1 if Tank suffered a career ending injury that the Cowboys would get cap relief from the guaranteed money such that it wouldn’t count against the cap? If so that’s news to me.

If they had insurance and many teams do for their big contracts

They would take the cap hit but any money paid out by the insurance company the team would recover that amount on the next year's salary cap

The same for any subsequent year if the player remained retired do to injury

I know there is insurance coverage for losses under certain circumstances. I wasn’t aware that it came off the cap. That doesn’t sound right. Are you sure about that?
