I, for one, think that the deal agreed upon will be good for both sides. I also think that DLaw will turn out to be worth the signing. However, to play a bit of advocate for Verdict, let's be honest, Jerry has had the luck of Charlie Brown with some of his trades and deals. The last of which was Dez, to Verdict's credit. I don't think this deal will be a problem for our team. However, I understand Verdict's reluctance to share my optimism here.
I think the deal is a little bit “rich” in terms of the percentage of the cap his contract ties up. He may turn out to be worth the cap hit. But if he doesn’t that sort of hit can really leave a hickey.
For instance what happens in game 1 of this year if Tank snaps a femur and it ends up being a career ender? Well that well obviously be most unfortunate. But hey that’s football. But you can’t discount that risk.
The problem I see is that he has been SO consumed with getting paid (much like Dez did) that I worry a little by that this red flag MAY come back to haunt us. He also has suspension and injury concerns, as well as his production drops off at the end of the season.
I will be cheering for him as loud as anyone. The Cowboys have made the decision. I hope it turns out to be a great contract. But yes I have my concerns about this one. Let’s hope that he is well worth his cap him.
I am hoping that he plays out his entire contract because otherwise his signing bonus gets prorated over a shorter time period driving up the true average cost per year significantly.
I appreciate your thoughtful, mature and insightful reply.
