I like this idea the only problem is Trevor Lawrence is not eligible next year. He is a sophomore this year.

That's where getting 2 comes in. I think Dak will be fine, but, if he isn't, then we'll have the extra first to get Lawrence in while in the next draft finishing our defence with a bang.

Clowney's best 2 seasons are 9 sacks and 9.5 sacks.

This guy hasnt even lived up to his draft position.
No way he is more valuable to our team than Zeke's 1400+ yards and 77 catches.
Heck Robert Quinn is comparable to what Clowney has produced.

The agenda boys will ignore this

The difference is that DL are worth the investment.
You think Clowney is worth Zeke, plus a 1st round draft pick, plus taking on an even bigger problem than we already have trying to figure out how to pay everyone and not get in a bind?

Great... then 80% of CZ HATES... Clowney + whomever we draft and fawns over Zeke shredding defenses in a different uniform arguing over how a competent FO could trade a 24 year old rushing champ in his prime. Lol... Am I lying? Seriously. ... The internet is fun though. Carry on.

already did the calculation

de + rb = about 23m
zeke ~15m
clowney ~22m
medium rde ~8m
medium rb ~1-2m

Our DEs are with the team, so we don’t have to pay anyone new if we don’t have Clooney. It’s simply Clowney’s expectation of around $21MM/year plus Johnson’s 1.8MM vs. Zeke’s expectation of around $15MM/ year. About a $7MM difference for this year.

And what about future years? Clowney is looking for a deal North of $100MM, while Zeke is looking at one near $60MM. And then there is Duke’s contract that will escalate to 4.6MM by 2021

And, of course, you aren’t factoring in the loss of a 1st round draft pick, which potentially could be the loss of a Leighton Vander Esch or Byron Jones, or Zach Martin or Travis Frederick

yes, go and try drafting a clowney where we draft.
clowney would make the dl a terror.
if u take a look at the roster, it would set for a few years.
if the added pressure, dont need to keep bjones either.
draft one in the 3rd round after drafting a rb in the 2nd.

the loss in rb production can be made up mostly with a rb drafted in the 2nd round.
just in case, draft another one in the 4th or 5h.
that is how much more the de is worth.

I know. We can parlay the extra picks into more extra picks.

I'll take that in a slightly different direction. I'd start by trying to contact either Indianapolis, Seattle, or the 49ers, and see if either will bite on giving us a first, but, before I accept anything, try to get a team like Cincinnati to jump in. If we can get a first and change, 2 firsts, or more from either, then I'd turn around and try to draft the best DT and the best safety we can get with the 2 we'd have next draft.

As for this season, I'd sign a back off the street like Ajayi, a cut RB, or maybe even attempt to get Murray in for a season. This would allow me to slowly develop Pollard into a starting back while scouting other backs. I think this would be the best course of action.
Most anything would be better than the path we seem destined to follow.

Yes, long term, I think what I've suggested would be best and, ironically, would benefit Dak and Cooper as we wouldn't be tying up so much to a running back and we could end up with a Super Bowl elite caliber defence.

It would be hard to draft a Clooney late in the first round, and I would be willing to give up our first round pick to get him, but that’s not the same as giving up our first round pick AND Zeke AND not only still have a problem paying everyone, but actually make the problem worse.

You like to talk about the draft pick separately from Zeke, and both separately from the increased salary problem, but you can’t. Sure Clooney for a first rounder would be a good deal, and even Clooney for Zeke would be reasonable, although it would be tough for a running offense to lose Zeke, but you have to look at the entirety of what you are proposing. The collective of what you suggest the Cowboys give up, in addition to compounding an already existing burden.

Trade for a player who will want even way more than Elliott?

That doesn’t make sense.

how is it a problem?
spend more on dl and less on rb and cb

with the added pressure, you dont keep bjones either.
zeke + jones = 30m
clowney is not going to 30m, so we are saving $.

draft rb 2nd and cb 3rd next draft.
meanwhile have johnson and pollard for rb.
in fact should trade to get a 3rd rb for this year and not wait for scraps from the waivers.

Oh, so now you are saying we lose Zeke AND Byron Jones AND a 1st round pick to get Clowney.

That’s so much better
