Not that it matters in the least, but they're calling it Troy now. Kind of like how Memphis State is now just "Memphis". (Ask Yeager.)

What did poor "State" do to get dropped all over the country?

Yeah, Spears hasn't exactly lit the world on fire...

However, he is a starter and has been a starter for us for quite some time. Even if Ratliff replaces him next year, Spears and Bowen would provide excellent depth. God forbid we miss Ratliff or Canty for a couple of games.

And its not like Spears has been a terrible weak link on this team a la Reeves. He (Spears) has been solid.

It took Ty Warren until his 4th season before the light clicked on for him. Maybe Spears follows suit. Worse case scenario, we get another solid year from Spears. That's nothing to cry over either.

I don't like that. Especially when you saw us get decimated with injuries at the CB position this past year.

As for Carpenter, I would like to see him for another year. I still haven't given up on him. And again, you need depth at the LBer spot for a 3-4. And maybe Carpenter beats our Ayodele next year. And if he doesn't, we at least have solid depth. This year he had a tear in his quad which probably affected his play/practice. And let's also not forget that he's been moved around a lot since we've drafted him. We drafted him to be a OLB, but Ellis made the transition, so we moved him to ILB....then Ellis got hurt, Carpenter moved to OLB....then this year, he moved back to ILB.

He really hasn't had a chance to get any continuity at one position. This would be the first time he's had that chance. And I'd like to see him get another crack at it before I give up on him completely (which would be paramount to trading him....because we wouldn't get a first day pick for him anyway).

We already have the pick and money invested in him. Unless his cap number is too high, I think we should give him another opportunity.

JMO.

Pretty sad.

Two very recent first-round picks being shopped and possibly only second-day picks in return.

Sad indeed. Who's the GM again? And why is his job not in jeopardy?

It had "state" when he was drafted, so that's what I'm counting.

  1. 15th overall
  2. 22nd overall
  3. 29th overall
Now, who would you draft with those picks? ;)

Kelly/Sweed or Jenkins
CB or WR
RB

Parcells was hired in 2003, same year Newman was drafted and CB was a glaring need...Hard to give credit to Parcells for a no brainer pick...Then again, Trufant didn't fare too badly either from that draft, did he, and he was picked several slots lower?...It simply underscores how poor Bill was with high picks, in general, and fared better with 2nd day picks

Oh, I see. It isn't a good pick because it was a need pick.

We also had a HUGE need at QB and Bill got torched over and over on this board for not taking Bryon Leftwich. Who is the better pick?

How come the Patriots don't get criticized for missing on picks?

They traded up for Chad Jackson a couple of years ago.....passing on Greg Jennings. Jackson is buried on the depth chart.....Jennings is starting in Green Bay.

It is a "state" university -- I don't know about Troy specifically but many such universities have a formal name and an informal name (e.g. University of California at Berkeley is commonly called Cal or Cal Berkeley).

Another good argument for trading our firsts for McFadden. Jerry has proven he can waste a draft pick with the best of them. Let's trade some trash for a sure thing.

Not disputing whether it was a state university. The dispute was whether it had state in it's name. Trivial? Yes. Boredom has taken over my keyboard.

Probably because his team was the #1 seed in its conference, has 12 pro bowlers and 3 all pros at the moment. He can only put the team together. He can't run the routes and catch the balls for them.

Jenkins will be long gone.

How about...
  1. (WR) Malcolm Kelly or Limas Sweed
  2. (DB) Reggie Smith or Aqib Talib
  3. (RB) Chris Johnson or Mike Hart
Depends on whos around.

I'm saying when it's a need pick and he's the highest 'rated' on the board, not exactly a great judge of talent on Bill's part to take the obvious pick...Moreover, each time he has taken a 'star' pick, plenty of controversy about guys that went lower whether it was Merriman when Ware was picked or Trufant when Newman was picked.

Nevermind that it doesn't derail the theory that Parcells did better on 2nd day picks than he did first day.

And no two ways about Carpenter, it was a ridiculous choice from the word go

I was kinda supporting your argument -- it likely is called "Troy State" by many people
