Trade rumors swirling about Carpenter, Spears

Rumor has it that the Cowboys are shopping former first-round picks DE Marcus Spears and LB Bobby Carpenter at the Senior Bowl.

Carpenter simply isn't a fit in a 3-4 defense, which makes Bill Parcells' decision to pick him pretty puzzling. Carpenter couldn't get on the field in any of the Cowboys' defensive packages this season but was a solid special teams player. He wasn't considered a reach when the Cowboys drafted him 19th overall two years ago, so some 4-3 teams might be interested.

Spears isn't a bad player, but he hasn't lived up to his first-round billing. To use a Tuna term, he's J.A.G. If the Cowboys get rid of Spears, Jay Ratliff could take his job, with Jason Ferguson and Tank Johnson forming a good NT tandem.

Time to give Jerry some advice: What would you want for Spears or Carpenter? I'm not sure the return for either would be more than a second-day pick, so try to be realistic.

Tim McMahon talking out his arse again.

How would he know whether or not Carp is a fit in the 3-4 defense? From the playing time he has gotten in the 3-4 he has looked GOOD.

Carp may be being "Shopped" but his "fit" in the 3-4 defense has NOTHING to do with it.

He should ask a 2nd rounder for Spears....Spears will be better at 4-3 DE, could suit up at DT in the 4-3 if needed, and there are plenty of 3-4 teams who would think a mid to late 2nd rounder would be better than they could draft a guy who can definitely play in the rotation there....no takers, at least a 3rd.

Carpenter....I would settle for a 3rd or 4th....only a 5th if they really are desperate to rid themselves of him. Again, he's probably better and certainly more experienced than any OLB for the 4-3 that one could find in the 4th round of the draft.

You shouldn't give them away just because they haven't lived up to expectations when both were projected to the 3-4, but clearly aren't best suited for it.

Looks like the long awaited move to DE for Raitliff is about to happen. I suspect they'll be bringing in a DT now either through FA or the draft.

If we're shopping Spears I hope we are able to replace him.

He may not be that great but he is not that bad either and thats a position we can't afford to get thin at.

I'm not the biggest Spears fan but I agree with you, I'm not so sure we should be getting rid of this guy because he's "solid", rather than being a world beater.

I could line Parcells and Ireland up and put a bullet in their arse for picking Carpenter and Fasano... W T F!

You can add Jacobs, Peterman, and Al johnson to the list. 3 more bullets.

Spears might be a better 4-3 DT - someone may value him. Maybe a 3rd.

Carpenter - there is enough tape on him around the NFL. Will be lucky to get a 7th for him.

Oh how soon did you forget Skyler Green?...and you meant Rogers, right?

not worth trading them. better to use up their rookie contracts, hope they have that magical contract year and let them go. rookies are cheap, anyone outside the top 5 is not earning much.

When can we exactly start making deals? After the Superbowl?

In case nobody answered your question yet - the "free agent signing period" for both UFA and RFA begins March 11th. "Trading" begins the first "business day" of March. I'm guessing that is what you were referring to.

People complain about those picks and yes, those picks did suck hard.

However, one thing that Bill brought was a "cut bait" attitude.

I can guarantee that if Jerry was in charge, both of those guys would have been on this team far longer than they were.

Every team makes bad picks -- but some compound the problem by holding on to them too long.

Wonder how much bashing Jones will get for drafting these two spuds?

That's right, Jerry gets the credit for the bad picks and Parcells for the good ones.

Everyone here laughs at the Commanders for trading away their first day picks. We may as well have done the same during the Parcells era. Sure he hit on second day picks and udfa's, but imagine if he had hit on all these wasted first day draft picks?

And keeping your first round draft picks to be backups and special team players doesn't make sense. We can use that cap space elsewhere, and get ST players for much cheaper.

Carpenter has had plenty chances and he hasn't done well. Two coaches can't be wrong. The guy is a bum and we need to move on without him.

Hatcher, MB3, Canty, Tnew, Ratliff, Crayton, Romo, Columbo, Witten, Ware, Burnett, Tnew

he hit too - 5 players going to Hawaii

Artie, there wasn't much to choose from after Skylar........I have looked at that draft and as much as I didn't like the pick...it seemed like a good one when I analyzed the next several after him.

Skylar was a Jeff Ireland pick
The way Parcells was all giggly on that phone call makes me think otherwise.

Anyone besides me thinking when Valley Ranch gets wind of this they deny it?
