The flip side is it costs us a bit this year on top of the new two roster spots that will get filled. But that's what cap space is for.

Update (4/30/08) -- After the Ayodele-Fasano trade, we're now $3,572,531 under the cap. Right now, that still includes the full $6,720 workout bonuses for Ayodele and Fasano, but we should get some of that back on our cap at some point, because they earned only a part of it.

If Adam Jones ever gets reinstated before the season begins, he will reduce our cap room by $700,000 minus the base salary of the player with our 51st-highest cap number. Right now, that's $370,000, so if he was reinstated today, he would reduce our cap room by $330,000.

Our rookie pool should end up being about $4.05 million. But because of the Rule of 51, we will use only about $1.98 million of cap room to sign all of our rookies.

All of that means we have a cushion of about $1.27 million of cap room right now. But as I've posted before, we have easy ways to increase that by more than $10 million --

Sorry if I missed it, but our ringer Adam usually posts which (usually ultimately failed) UDFA gets $15K bonus for signing versus $1K at the other end of the spectrum..

Usually, we screwed up and the $1K rookies make the team instead of the other guys. (Matt Moore I think last year got a decent bonus for signing, $2-3K. Wow what a bargain. Bartel's status may be compensation for Moore leaving .. "Well" JJ might have said ... "he was almost as good as Moore" (in drills anyway last year) ... Sigh ...

The Cowboys scouts and front office guys fly under the radar, unless you are in the media and get sent the hard-copy media guides. Tiny pictures of mostly long-time career scouts .... then there was the dude last-name of Hall (?) last few years who's a cat who looks liike the future of our scouting. Kinda rad ...

Adam, I think, must be an ace in the hole and works for the Boys (else he would have no clue about Cowboys scouts, much less could post pix of them on this board like he's done in the past ...). OK Adam sez he doesn't work for the Boys, maybe he hacks into there ...

But Cowboys scouts/pro personnel guys seldom get a mention in the press at any rate ...

You can't even find a pix of our new chieftain Tom Ciskowski anywhere, unless (like me) you were lucky enuf to get media guides for the last XX years, with a very small photo of him every year. The dude has been around forever, back to the Jimmy days I think, maybe beyond. Despite his tenure and his importance, he's more anonymous than the equipment guys ... beyond scrutiny. How can you complain if your enemy doesn't have a face? Larry Lacewell maybe bore too much criticism ...

We could restructure Romo's contract to give him the minimum salary this season and pay him the rest of his old salary as a signing bonus to save $4.9125 million of cap room.

We could extend Owens' contract and save just about as much -- $6.17 million minus whatever the prorated portion of his new signing bonus would be. For example, if he signed a four-year extension (this year plus four more) and got an $10 million signing bonus, we'd save $4.17 million of cap room.

We also could sign Hamlin to a long-term contract. That could save $2 million, easily (possibly more, depending on the size of the contract).

There are other ways, but those three are the easiest ways to save a lot of cap room (the three examples I used would save more than $11 million of cap room, combined). The question is whether there are players out there worth spending it on.

There's plenty. New deals for Owens and Hamlin could save a lot of cap room this season. And signing all of our draft picks and having Adam Jones reinstated will use up no more than $2,331,123 of our cap room.

Looks to me that they just created roughly $3.8-3.9 million more in cap space by re-signing TO. That would give them about $9 million now to continue working.
