Stephen Jones seemed very upset about this pick. We must have had 1 of the 4 or 5 guys that they were debating ranked way above the Michigan TE

The problem with this pick is that you can't take on projects when you must win the Super Bowl with your draft picks. Since Jerry will never go all-in on free agency, you can't whiff on a 2nd round pick like we just did. You don't get luxury picks when you are ineffective in FA.
If there is one thing this kid is not it’s a project. For a 2nd rounder my concern is how high his ceiling really is but in theory this is a guy with the experience, skill set, and athletic ability to step right in and be a player for the cowboys. He’s a legitimate te who both blocks and runs routes well enough to play right away. That’s the piece I can actually be OK with this pick on. I’m sure there will be other players we look back on in 3 years and say in hindsight they are better, however this is a move that helps the cowboys win a championship in 2023. This is not a project. This is not a troubled kid trying to get his life together. This is not a typical jerry Jones 2nd round gamble. I just think the gap between Schoonmaker and a guy like Ferguson is like upgrading you 2016 Honda Civic for the 2017 model.

Didn't see anything extraordinary in the highlight reel.
I don’t disagree but to be fair to the player he’s a TE with strong measurables and athleticism. IF there is an under the radar guy everyone is sleeping on at TE he’s a good candidate as his tape could not look that special playing in a somewhat bland run heavy Michigan offense.

To look at it in a positive way

The cowboys are pretty loaded at almost every position. A big guy at dt, and a blocking TE, can be significant additions and strengthen the very few weaknesses this team has.

Run defense
Goal Line defense
Short yardage defense
Run blocking improvement

Both these guys could get playing time this way, and make big time contributions.
You don't draft a blocking TE in the second round. Specially that one of the top guards in torrence was available and went the next pick. Not smart pick.

He appears to be a poor man's Michael Mayer, which is fine, but he was drafted 2 rounds too early.

Look, I'm no draft fanatic. I don't go deep into analyzing college careers. Therefore, I can't claim any deep convictions when it comes to the Cowboys selections. Plus, I have to give them the benefit of the doubt at this point in time. Recently, they seem to have done very well. They've had a couple of glitches but the pluses outweigh the minuses.

Still......

I thought that the Cowboys were going to focus more on the running game next season. Wouldn't that require an upgrade at LG and RB?

I get the TE, Schoonmaker. he a good blocking TE. I get Mazi Smith. the only upgrade we need more that the two previously mentioned is D-line interior against the run. Good pick, now that think about it some more.

However,

Pollard can't do it alone and I thought that Jerry would have learned by now that you just can't throw anybody in there to run the ball. With all the Curvin Richards and Derrick Lassics and Joseph Randles that have come through this franchise, surely he understands that!

I thought we were trying to find an upgrade to the LG position. Right now, we barely have a warm body and that isn't likely to improve with a day #3 pick.

So, I admit, I'm somewhat confused. What happened to focusing on a more relevant running game?
Good point.

Our lack of RB talent is gonna get us.

He's not a project. He started for more than 4 years because of the viral thing. He played in one of the most prostyle systems in the NCAA.
Hes gonna be damn near 30 when his rookie contract is up. He had 600 yards total receiving in those 4 years. Give me a break

The pick would've made more sense in 3rd, but let's hope he finds a way to play up to that RAS score.

This is an MM pick.... Schoonmaker gonna surprise. Nasty, nasty run blocker with soft hands and 4.6 speed.

Our offense needed some Schoon, now we need the RB

Honestly I don’t think TE was a even a need at all. All this we got to replace Dalton Schultz garbage when we should have went guard is a miss imo.
We got 4 TEs on the roster before this pick and the FO is gonna tell me this guys better I don’t buy it but I’ve had a night to sleep off my disdain
I ask myself did the chiefs fans think they had a great TE when Kelsey was picked in the 3rd or San Fran with kittle in the 5 th so I’ll give it time

I much preferred a RB or OL or even WR. TE just wasn’t a dire need IMO that you had to reach for

This is how some describe the Dallas TE draft pick of the 2nd round: "Strong hands. Not a YAC type whatsoever and only broke out at the end of a long career. Fun player who fills a need but this is too early. "

This is how the OG that the Bills selected right after Dallas is described: "Enormous human being who actually plays with more foot quickness than his size would indicate. Masher in one-on-one scenarios. Must utilize his length better at next level but already very good anchoring skill. More help for Josh Allen is smart for Buffalo."

So Dallas could have improved their OL but instead reached for an injury prone blocking TE.

Good luck with the defensive pressure this season Dak.

This is problem with the pick as well.

I guess Mike is convinced he needs a full-time TE that can run and block.

He will be 25 years old when the season starts. So a TE drafted at least 1 round too early, 4 years older than most other players, injury issues, and unproductive in terms of a receiving TE......great job Jerry.
