Didnt realise i was being negative. I have high hopes for the offense this season. I agree Owens talents were on a decline but no doubt he took two guys out of the defense. I only saw one game in person, it was the Ravens game. I saw the safety high on his side the whole game. Roy had a corner, that was it, nobody behind him.

Now Felix was in the first Washington game and had no touches. Also did little in the Arizona game. Where were the mismatches?

But i agree, another year...lets see what happens.
For the record I didn't take your input as negative.

Roy, Felix, Romo, and Austin need to improve over last year. The O-line does. You might find it odd that I include Felix because he was great when used. I add him because we have to use him. I think the team realizes that more than ever.

On the Offensive side of the ball a lot of pride has been hurt. I think that is great. It is a motivation.

I like the 2009 team better than the 2008 team. Call me stupid if you wish but I really do. I will take Roy with a full off season to work with Romo over Owens. I think Roy will go to the Pro Bowl this year and Owens won't even be the best WR on his team.

Theirs is similar, but they do not keep a 2nd RB in the backfield. They usually keep the Fullback there and he is less of a running threat than a RB would be. Be interesting to see if they use the Connecticut kid in the backfield instead. Good observation because Reid got this formation from my college coach.

Yeah!

One of my rare moments of football insight.

I'm currently watching America's Game: 1999 St. Louis Rams on the NFL Network. Seeing the mismatches the Rams' offense was able to create with Marshall Faulk, I'm excited by the potential of your play.

That's a cool fact about Reid and your college coach.

How did he like it?

He thought that if the boys could win the individual matchups they would never need a different formation...I then explained that the Will & Sam LB was the wildcard for the Defense and if they blitzed them in the correct gap...etc...

But I kind of always do that to him show him this great play/formation and than show him how to stop it....and than he doesn't think it is such a great play/formation...but I explain that it still is and that the game is about mismatches and execution.

This game is honestly a human chess match. It's no wonder Tom Landry was so hard to beat. He understood every possible gap and angle. Hence the Flex.

You know what I love most about the game? I really mean this too. You can take the 11 best Offensive players in the NFL and put them together for a play. Take 11 backup Defensive players and stop them. Vice versa too. You can move the ball with backups against the 11 best Defensive players.

It is entirely about execution, gaps, angles, and techniques.

It's why a guy like Warrick Dunn can last as long as he has in the modern NFL despite being too small to play. It's why a physical specimen like Drew Henson can fail. You cannot rest on your laurels, reputation, or talent alone.

Heart is the great equalizer. You can't measure it and you can't win without it. That is why Emmitt Smith is the all time rushing leader and Walter Payton is #2. Heart defined both.

According to ProFootballFocus.com, we used Marion Barber, Felix Jones, two wide receivers and one tight end for 10 plays last season. All of them were passes. One was a defensive penalty for illegal use of hands. On the other nine, Romo went 6-for-9 for 68 yards and one touchdown (a 126.2 rating and 7.56 yards per attempt).

We also used Barber, Felix and one wide receiver on four plays, with two tight ends twice (Witten on both plays, Curtis once and Bennett once) and one tight end and one fullback twice. All four plays were runs. One was a 16-yard run wiped out by an illegal formation penalty (no eligible receiver on the line of scrimmage to the right side). The other three runs went for a total of 6 yards (Barber twice for no gain, and Felix once for 6 yards).

That is exactly what makes it the best game in the world... being athelitic is nice but in this game it is not enough

What I really like about that formation is the permutations you can do on the right side with Witten, Felix, Barber, and whomever the WR ends up being over there.

Example, on the sweep animation, I would stop Felix directly behind or possibly offset slightly behind Witten. Instead of Felix running the route, he picks up Witten's blocking assignment in the animation and Witten runs a little zone splitting route, a speed out towards the sidelines, hitch, or whatever else they can design that takes advantage of the LB/SS mismatch.

Example 2, same sweep animation with the same basic formation and presnap motions. Run the fake toss to Barber, Witten pulls out and Williams engages his block on the CB. Witten and 11 are then the blockers for the screen pass to Felix.

Example 3, Felix motions out as before and sets. This time around Barber stays in to pass protect while Felix, RW and Crayton run routes. If there is no extra pass rusher coming through, Barber runs a route on the left, while Witten chips his guy and flares again into the right side of the field vacated when Felix and RW ran their guys down field.

the possibilites are almost endless line up 2 TE's on one side...etc

Being one of those guys who draws up plays in his head, I can tell you I love the almost unheard of potential you have with:

  1. The best TE duo in the league who are equally adept at blocking and pass catching.
  2. The explosive ability of Felix Jones
  3. The almost starting quality ability of Tashard
  4. A bruising back like MB3 who also has shown he's a passing target
  5. Tony's ability to extend plays and make things happen when improvising intelligently
  6. Our #1 WR's ability to go up and fight for a ball
  7. Patrick Crayton's sure hands
  8. Miles Austin's speed
  9. Our offensive line's ability to pass block
That said, I think our strength is going to be almost weighted towards the defense this year. I really do.

That's damn good work dcfanatic! :hammer:

The graphic illustration might persuade some to set aside their concerns about Terrell Owens' absence temporarily.

Then again, perhaps not.

Great post.

Someone mentioned going 2 TE/1 WR instead. Here's something I've been mentally toying with for awhile.

What if we used a wishbone type of personnel group... Barber, Felix, AND Choice. Plus Witten and Bennett.

That's right, no WRs.

The TEs line up tight...

...........80-76-63-65-70-75-82
.........................9

..................23..........28
........................24

Here's where it gets interesting. We can either run out of this formation, depending on the personnel group/look Romo sees from the D, OR... we shift... and the formation now looks like this...

....80.....76-63-65-70-75-82........28
.....................9

............................23
.....................24

And we're back in a "standard" 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE look which we should easily be able to pass or run out of.

The versatility of guys like Felix, Witten, and Bennett gives us so many options.

The problem with this is that Felix and Bennett are not true wide recievers and though they can beat Safeties and linebackers, they are not going to beat true corners. This leaves nine in the box to stuff Marion and Choice. Sorry but I don't think this is a good plan.

So, if there are 2 corners covering Jones and Bennet and "nine players in the box", there's no one covering Jason Witten.

Touchdown!

No one would ever stack 9 in the box against any team. That's suicide. All you have to do is send 3 people on pass routes and someone is wide open.

Please do not ever coach your kids or anyone else's kids in football. Ever. Thanks.
