IRVING, Texas - The Cowboys are ranked second in the NFL in total offense through the first seven games, but their No. 1 wide receiver entering the season -- Roy Williams -- has only 14 catches for 249 yards and two touchdowns.
Williams wasn't angry on Wednesday, his designated interview day at Valley Ranch. He calmly answered questions about his current role in the offense and praised the unit for its versatile production (eight players have caught or rushed for touchdowns).
But naturally Williams is frustrated that he hasn't found a rhythm with quarterback Tony Romo since arriving in a trade from Detroit last October. In 16 games since, he has caught 33 passes for 447 yards and three touchdowns.
"I'm the No. 1 receiver," Williams said, "but things are just going No. 2's way right now."
That would be Miles Austin, whose 482 yards in the last three games are the most in NFL history by a receiver in his first three starts.
Above all else, Williams says he's excited the Cowboys are winning and making plays on offense. But he's also uncertain why he and Romo remain out of sync. The two appeared to make steady progress in training camp and preseason after Williams' first off-season with the team.
Williams caught a touchdown pass in last Sunday's win over Seattle, but others were thrown too high or behind him. He was targeted seven times and finished with two catches for 19 yards.
"I anticipated us rolling right now," Williams said. "I mean, we're rolling in the win column, yeah. But as far as me and Romo's connection . . . getting better though, getting better.
"I'm still working. I'm still doing the things I'm supposed to do in the ball game. We're just not even close."
It's not due to lack of work. Head coach Wade Phillips has praised both players' talents and work habits in practice. Williams said he only takes practice reps with Romo, not backup Jon Kitna.
"
I'm not mad at anything by no means," Williams said. "
I'm getting my chances. It's just not connecting. I'm not going to rant and rave and be pissed off. I'm going to continue to work."
The Cowboys' three-game winning streak, as well as the offense's success (four games over 30 points) has helped Williams' spirits.
"That definitely makes it easier, and all those guys are coming through for us. It's a great offense," he said. "I can pout and be mad and not participate but I'm still out there run-blocking and trying to screen the runners to score and all that stuff.
"It's fun. It's fun to watch this offense go."
Williams just wants to do more himself to keep the offense going.

The guy doesn't sound like a prima donna to me. As can be expected, he sounds frustrated that he hasn't contributed much in the teams recent success as a pass catcher. Based on everything we've heard from those who are around the team on a daily basis, he works hard and has put the necessary time with his QB. Romo doesn't have the same problem with other WRs but then again they've been together for about three years or so. It's just a matter of time before something clicks.
