I don't know, I've never heard Madonna really belt out a tune. I think there are singers and there are entertainers and very rarely, you'll find someone that is both.
Dead spot on. I have seen many people who can sign, who just are not that great to go see in person. One of the things I encourage artists to do is find a way to be entertaining while singing. Most of the folks who are starting out don't understand that. They are all about the song. While that is indeed a major component, it is not the major component.
If you want to look at the epitome of someone who was both an entertainer and also had great signing ability, IMO there was few better than Elvis Presley. Ask anyone who actually went to one of his shows and they will tell you he was a great entertainer as well.
Garth brooks was a great entertainer as well in the Country genre.
But in the end, the ones that will last will be the ones who can combine both on stage. Artists make a ton of money with record sales but their real money comes in the venue bookings, and if you can't draw a crowd, then you can't make the big money. Record sales are a tool to drive people to the shows in general, especially for new artists like these guys on Idol.
