Another year not addressing QB1 deficiency

Not me. Don't like Dak myself. However, there was no one available as an upgrade.
There's literally FA QBs right now that can lead you to the same success Dak leads us to.

We have one playing back up for us right now that can embarrass us in the playoffs just like Dak.

Imagine if the Chiefs didn't trade up for Mahomes because they thought "Ya know, Alex Smith gets us to the playoffs and all we need to do is surround him with even more talent".

Above is Dallas Cowboys history at the position during Jones' reign as general manager. And for some totally illogical reason, some observers believe/think/hope influences like Will McClay, Mike McCarthy, etc., will motivate Jones into investing a DAY 1 or DAY 2 draft pick at the position with an established franchise quarterback on the roster.

Forget history. Disregard history. Be purposefully befuddled.
I always thought the same thing ...... Then he drafted a DT in the first round this year ....... after 32 years when there was flashier players on the board.

Sombody is influencing him .....

Simply no true. Look at recent years - % of 1st round QBs who are expected to be their team's 2023 starter:

2022 - 1/1 100%
2021 - 4/5 80%
2020 - 4/4 100%
2019 - 2/3 67%

Last 4 years 11/13 - 85%.

QB drafting has got very good in recent years.
So who is this prospect who was available at 26?

Just looking at one year, , 2020, Tua and Love have both flopped so far.

That was fun, lets go to 21: Justin Fields sucks. Trevor Lawrence, good. Mac Jones, looking busty. Zach Wilson sucks.

Honestly, teams generally let a QB start for several years to make sure they are good/not good. How do you not know this?

Well hades, let's look at 19: Kyler: very mediocre, looking busty. Daniel Jones: Just not very good up to this point. Haskins: Sucks.

Did you mean to prove my point?

You don't think addressing the biggest weakness on the offense and the most important position in pro sports would make the team better?
Absolutely. However, there was no one there at 26. Think, man, if you're going to go 1st round QB,he had better be IT. If not, you're stupidly wasting resources.

I'd love to move on from Dak myself, but throwing darts at QBs is not the answer. Maybe Tune will be there for our 4th.

So here is the thing. Dak is here for the year no matter what. His cap hit says he is also here next year too. So if you take a QB in the 2nd round that's two of his 4 years wasted. If in the 1st round it's 2 of his potential 5 years. This year was the year to find (and I think we will) a late backup QB with the potential to be a starter but more likely a good, young, cheap backup. If Dak plays the way he did last year in 2023 I can see the talk. Otherwise you are looking at going there early this year if it was an absolute steal - Stroud at #26 or Levis in the 3rd. If this time next year we are looking at Dak being another year older and coming off another sub-par year we can think about taking a QB early. Ideally Dak plays well and we extend him. But if not we can't extend him just because it helps one years cap (and hurts 5). So this is a topic for next year based on cap hits not this year IMO

Levis was there at 1, Hooker at 2.
Jones has always been bad at qb development. Even back to Aikman, he felt the need to also get Walsh for some reason. He was 100% unprepared to transition form Aikman. Then with the whole Henson thing, that got botched, he supposedly threw too sidearm and Parcells didnt like that but then Romo did the same and Parcells just threw him in as a desperate measure. And we got lucky. Then the whole Romo and Moore both getting injured in preseason and Dak coming in and winning like 9 of his 1st 10 games. We get lucky all the time. I hope 3 years from now we are not screwed with an ineffective Dak and nothing in the works to replace him.

It will be really funny if Levis develops into a good player!

Just think of all the threads...

That was never going to happen, and there are better QBs coming in next year's draft.

The soonest they could get off Dak would be too years and even then there's a cap penalty. There's no quick fix on the horizon.

I’m more upset that we aren’t building a team that can carry him more than the unrealistic expectation to replace him.

We need guys that can easily get the ball and take it to the house block.

Torrence and Achane I would’ve liked.

I am not questioning Will McClay, Mike McCarthy, etc., influencing Jerry Jones to invest in smart early round picks like Mazi Smith. That is a testament to their knowledge and expertise in the sport.

No. I am saying no one (those folks included) will make Jones devote an early round pick for quarterback, just the quarterback position, as long as Dak Prescott has his full support. And right now, there is zero indication in my opinion that Jones' backing has slipped one iota--especially after another draft has transpired with him not investing in an early round pick at quarterback with high grade candidates available.

Was Levis the #1 BPA on our first pick? If so, why didn't we take him? If we're not trade up for a quarterback prospect, and we're not going to take a chance on the ones that slide to us, then we're basically playing hope chess in the bargain bin.

The bottom line is this:
The decision to stay the same when already knowing the ceiling of this QB will continue to be the downfall of this team.

Accepting status quo is not a plan either.

Not taking the risk to improve the QB position through all means, ie draft/trade/FA is just another excuse to be happy with the mediocrity ceiling that this QB provides.

There's a reason it's called risk-reward.
No risk, no reward.

How's that definition of insanity go?

It's gone on for way past time to take a risk on something new.

He could just as easily turn into another Carson Wentz or Paxton Lynch, guys that many wanted to be the QB here.

I remember a huge contingent on this board were doing backflips over Carson Wentz and were mini eagles fans until he eventually got traded.

Why think? CowboysZone has been the source of NUMEROUS rueing 'Why didn't [fill in the blank] not get picked? Look at him now!' threads. Literally hundreds of threads. Sure. There will be plenty of haha-ing but it will not be anything new.
