Anthony Spencer Signs With Saints

Well, I'm sure that most everyone knows my feelings about Spencer and if not....I say good riddance!

Saints are truly getting desperate.
They were said to be in the process of blowing up the team and starting anew.
by hiring this inconsistent player, it seems like they be just treading water.

Damn. I knew Rob was going to try and reach into our ranks. I bet on it being Bruce Carter though. My friend picked Spencer. I'm out 10 bucks (or a cold beer, as the wager went).

1 cold beer for 10 bucks sounds like my kind of beer.

He's probably a bigger beer snob than me. I know if I'm buying him one when we're out and about it's going to be one of the Trappists or some limited rotator.

I guess we should not be so hard on Spencer. Not his fault he was overhyped and inconsistent.

Our defense just became a little worse and the Saints defense got a little better.
Spencer was a solid player for us.

The dude never lived up to his first round draft pedigree.............had basically one really good season, got franchised, blew his knee out and was never the same.

That about sums up his time in Dallas.

40% of first rounders are busts.

Getting 5-6 years and a Pro Bowl out of the 26th pick is above average

Oh come on, don't go using revisionist history. He was good to very good for us until he was hurt.

He was?!?!?!?
Is that why he managed one season with double digit sacks playing opposite DeMarcus Ware?
I see your "revisionist history" and raise you a "fuzzy math." ;) :D

Depends on the contract, I believe it needs to be over $1 mil to qualify. But if so, I think it may get us back to the 3 or 4 pick level possibility.
4 is max no matter how many FA's you lose I beleive,

This was listed in a bloggingtheboys article but I don't know if its accurate -

  • 3rd-round pick: $8 million or more
  • 4th-round pick: $5.5 million
  • 5th-round pick: $4.2 million
  • 6th-round pick: $2.5 million
  • 7th-round pick: $1 million

From that, I do think there is a shot we get a 6th rounder as a compensation pick.

Can't remember, but knowing us we probably burned a pick to move up and get him. So probably a couple of wasted picks.

Yes, we did. And traded with, yuck, Philadelphia. I remember saying, "Philly is going to rue the day they made that trade."
Boy, was I wrong.

DAL got Spencer-#26-PHI and a 2008 1st-CLE Felix Jones for

#22-CLE Brady Quinn, #36-PHI(from CLE) Kevin Kolb, a 3rd-PHI and a 5th-PHI

That is actually dead on. His only good year was his contract year and then that was hit. We paid that guy a TON of money.

This revisionist history is silly.

His sack total went up in 2012 but so did his pass rushing attempts. Its been demonstrated statistically that his pass rushing efficiency remained constant to the previous several years. This was all hashed out back then and it bears out to reason because 2012 was when Ware started getting hurt all the time.

He was an excellent press LB and pancaked TE and RB routinely and was by far the best pursuit, tackling, and poa defender we had on the roster.

He got hurt and outside of that and handwaving at decent sack totals I don't see much to criticize him for.
